How effective would a sword be for home defence?

Depends on your SPD and DEX

Do a few cut tests with it. If you don't fuck up majorly, any intruder will probably run away faced with a madman swinging a sword at him.
If he doesn't shoot you, that is.

absolute shit. try and swing anything but a tire thumper in a hallway

Not at all.
People run fast when they aren't wearing much and burglars tend to be fast runners to begin with.
Not to mention swinging a sword in a hallway is going to be very difficult.
tbqh I'd rather just grapple with the basketball american and beat his ass then try and stab him with a sword, especially if you live in a tight house.

Perhaps OP is planning on using a gladius and ballistic shield combination...
Arguably a rapier would be a superior choice for hallway engagement
Fair. You'd need someyhing relatively light like a katana. If anything else, it'll scare the living shit out of burglars.

Wakizashi are far more useful indoors
There is a reason samurai never took off their wakizashi even when they would remove their katana indoors
>he's not using a riot shield with claymores taped to it
what the fuck do you think you're doing

A pistol would be better but if you insist on using a sword I'd suggest something short like a gladius since you're going to be in a confined space.

weeb detected.
People have absolutely shredded home invaders with machetes before, it's commonplace in third world countries.
I keep a sword by my bed in case I'm feeling slightly more suicidal than usual and I don't want to wake the neighbors.

This or a cutlass or any other sword intended for close quarters would be perfectly effective so long as he doesn't shoot your ass. My old hometown had a few katana vs multiple intruders incidents and partial to full severing of extremities with minimal harm to homeowner were the outcomes. That said would rather have a pistol and bright flashlight
