Best rifle of WW2?
>>
best standard issue rifle, yes. In all practical reasonings the m1 garand was the best because there were a lot of them.

but the fg 42 or mp 44 probably get the distinguishment as best rifle overall

I think there are many factors to what makes a the "best" rifle of WW2. Some would be:
>Cost per unit
>Weight
>Ammunition used
>Number fielded (relative to size of the respective army)
>Was used by a country that actually fought in the war

My vote, is for the Type 99. Cost was about the same as any Mauser based bolt action. Was most likely the lightest short rifle of the war. Used a rimless 30 cal round with decent quality control. The biggest downfall is that Japan never fully fielded the Type 99 (Type 38s were still in service at the end of the war).

WW2 involved more than just Europe. Japan fought too.

Examples of guns not used that always will show up:
>K31 or any Schmidt Rubin
>Swede Mausers

I got SKS on the phone here, he'd like a word with you anon...
>>
>>34234494
what are you even talking about
>>
>>34234564
If the Finn's could get it, they used it. Italy dumped most of their M38s on Finland for example.
>>
>>34234627

There isn't even any such thing as an MP42. There was an MG42, which was a machine gun, and there was an MP44, which was an assault rifle. But there was no MP42.

So I guess you're taking history next year, huh? Good luck in the 6th grade.
>>
>>34234028
Yes, having semi-auto when everyone else has bolt action is a huge advantage.

MP44 was also rare as fuck, Germans mostly had bolt action mausers.

>>34234431
>best service rifle
>bolt action
M1 Garand was also the most expensive service rifle, but America is the best for a reason.

Also the British like to pretend the Enfield was super special.
>>
>>34234492
It's a rifle, it was designed and used by one of the main factions in the second world war, and it's fucking awesome. I don't see your point.
>>
>>34234492
A few of them were used @ the end of WW2.
>>
>>34234691
But there was FG-42, which was battle rifle.
>>
In use from 1890's till present.

Used by over 50 different countries throughout the 20th century.

Won two world wars.

No clue WW2 kept going until 1949.
>>
>>34235646
They begun manufacturing SKS from early 1945, dipshit.
>>
>>34235646
It was formally adopted in 1949. There's a reason the designation is SKS-45, you know.

Best information I could find on the SKS in WW2 was late in the war, and it was a prototype. Even then, it doesn't have a reliable source.

Would you really call a prototype that was used for a month near the end of a conflict the best weapon of that conflict, especially considering there isn't even hard proof that it was used?

I wouldn't.
>>
>>34235861
The most competent sources I have read, state that the SKS saw limited troop trials in the last few months of WW2. A common theme amongst those sources was that even when the guns saw combat use, it was against pockets of holdouts not the German military proper.
>>
>>34235985
That's just about the best I could find, too. Im not sure a trial weapon should qualify as best of the war. Don't get me wrong, it's a superb rifle for its day.
>>
>>34234691
i think he means the mkb 42
>>
>>34236022
I agree about common usage being a factor. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if the SKS never saw combat but because some fudd saw it was SKS-45, he thought it must have seen some fighting. Then he wrote a book with information out his ass, that book has been cited and the book that cited it has been cited. Eventually we get what was originally fudd lore that is now accepted as real knowledge.

Found a pic of the apparent prototype. I heard that it was like one Anon said, used against pockets of resistance, and possibly against Japan at the very end of the war. I want to believe that story of SKS' in Berlin, but whether or not that's true is debatable.

>>
>>34236367
Trust me, I want to believe it, so a fantastic rifle actually got to see mainline combat fighting for its native country, but I just can't.

Unfortunately, the SKS will always be outshined by the AK because that saw actual combat for the USSR.
