Okay, so I'm having trouble deciding between a shotgun and a .22 rifle for my next gun. Either one would be only like 200 dollars, just something cheap that shoots. I was thinking a maverick 88 or a Savage .22. which one makes more sense to buy?
Do you want to blast bigger holes in shit, or poke lil' holes in shit?
Home defense?
Hunting?
Plinking?
Range gun?
And remember, a thread died for this.
Marlin model 60. Can't go wrong.

I want to blast stuff way more than plink but the small caliber would be cheaper. I want the one that would be way more fun which I think would be the 12 gauge.

To each his own. Ultimately, it's your decision. However, it sounds like you intend to use your fun for recreational use.
Consider your circumstances though: do you have land, or are you mostly limited to ranges?
You would be wasting your time by going to a range with a cheap shotgun.

^I agree with this anon. I personally find plinking more satisfying. Plus, you can take a .22 to nearly any range, indoor or outdoor .

I live in AZ and I can find lots of open desert to shoot in. I hardly use ranges.

12 gauge is only fun if you have an outdoor place to shoot that lets you shoot whatever. indoors with paper targets is a miserable experience once the initial fun wears off.

At this point, I'd have to tell you to get both. Savage makes a decent affordable .22. If you see one at your lgs with the Accutrigger, get it. I'd spring for a Mossberg shotgun, the 500 is a good place to start.
I just know I would quickly get bored of a shotgun. So why not both?

Why not the model 795? Fuck tube mags. Are you a Califag?

795 is good too. I stand by my Savage accutrigger recommendation, but any Marlin .22 pricetag stands to reason.
