This pertains mainly to the "things that go boom" subsection of DDs (explosives, grenades, HE shells, etc). Let's say you're made of money and you want to buy and use a one time use destructive device (pic related). Once you've used said device how do you tell the ATF that the device has been destructed and that you no longer own it?

Throw it in their office, I think they'll figure it out pretty quick.

You send them a letter saying it has been destroyed and ideally some proof of it being destroyed. If you own an NFA item and you destroy it you are entitled to a portion of the tax stamp back but i've never looked into that for a DD
