I was looking to get a lever gun in 45 Colt. How does it against small to medium size game under 150 yds. I know I can get a .44 mag, but I was thinking 45 Colt so I can do Cowboy action shooting. Thoughts and recommendations? Also Cowboy Thread, post aesthetic cowboy guns and ask questions
>>
>>34226307
both .357 and .44 Magnum will significantly outperform .45 Colt from a long barrel
>>

Bday Boy today here, just bought a Marlin GBL in 45-70

Picked it up today with the aims for just range fun and eventually some hunting?

What am I in for?

If you want to do Cowboy Action get an 1866 or 1873 Uberti clone and get it in .44-40 for historical realism or .357/.38 for affordable shooting.
The 1866 is way more aesthetic if that's what you're after.

not the best round for range fun imo, it's expensive and the kick is pretty ferocious, especially in a lightweight rifle like the Marlin.

I'm thinking about a Rossi R92 in 45LC as my next levergat. It's a solid blend of aesthetics, affordability, and ammo availability.

Not really cowboy but I'm feeling the itch for falling block and am thinking a Ruger No. 1 would scratch that itch well. It'd be mostly for range fun. I'm thinking a .308 because it's cheap to plink with but maybe I should get it in some big dumb caliber for the novelty. Thoughts? I know these aren't really common but they are being made, should I be expecting to pay around $900?
>>
There's no reason why you couldn't cowboy action shoot with .44 magnum/special, they make cowboy loads for both and most .44 special loads are (and always have been) weaksauce. Factory loads are expensive but they are the same price as .45 colt so it's a wash. If you want to go cheap go .357.

That said, any caliber can get the job done to about 200 yards so long as you know what you're doing.

30-30 is the only lever gun that doesn't make you a brokeback mountain faggot

.45 Colt isn't any more appropriate for CAS than .44 Magnum is.

What does /k/ think about the Henry mare's leg .22 LR? I'm wanting to get a fun little plinker and this thing really speaks to me for some reason.
>>
>>34228040
I was just thinking about this the past couple days. Do 44mag lever carbines eat 44 specials? I figured there might be a problem with the shorter case.
>>
>>34228137
range toy or Josh Randall cosplay only
>>
>>34228155
They do for the same reason .357 and .38spl work.
>>
>>34226342
I just threw some slugs through my 12ga, and now I really want a .45-70 GBL. But I could also get the cowboy version (26 inch octagonal barrel, full tube) for the same price. My LGS has a ton of Marlins on sale, plus there's a great rebate out now on all their lever guns. I'm going to go this week to pick one out.
>>
>>34228155
Yes, but as with shooting .38 Special from a .357 chamber, accuracy suffers a bit and it tends to build up a stubborn lead deposit between the edge of the casing and the end of the chamber.
>>
>>34226307
.45 Colt has more case capacity than .44 mag and can be loaded to much higher pressures in a levergun than factory loads would have you believe.
>>
>>34226307
Find an 1883 Colt-Burgess repro in .45 Colt. It's better than the Winchesters.

Just got a winchester 94 in .30-30 as a graduation present, feeling pretty good rn
>>
Picked up a Glenndale Mod 30 in 30-30 for $200 yesterday. Guy threw in a box of American Whitetail ammo for it for free as well. Kind of already in love with it even though I haven't shot it yet, because it matches my Ruger Black Hawk fairly well.
>>
>>34229172
I have basically this same one, love it. Super lightweight and maneuverable, it's my hiking gun for the ADK too, plenty of fuck off and no semi-auto potential for FtF
>>
>>34229172
>>34230608
Does yours have that hammer feature where the hammer can't strike the firing pin unless you pull the trigger?
>>
>>34228137
It is mainly a range toy, likely, but I've handled them and I really like the feel, they're pretty nice. I think it would also make a really handy plinker for innawoods adventures to bring with another gun or a nice little gun for squirrels and the like.

I'm likely getting one this weekend, I'm probably going to love the damn thing.
>>
>>34230716
>I think it would also make a really handy plinker for innawoods adventures
That's exactly what I'm thinking of doing with it. I know Henry makes some nice quality stuff, so that's of no concern for me. The main issue I have is that I can't quite justify buying a mare's leg over a normal .22. Once you get yours, be sure to post about it!
>>
>>34228040
I think Cowboy action shooting requires "cowboy" era calibers, if not I would've gotten a 357 mag lever gun

>>34226332
Commercial loads yes. With a strong action and proper loading 45lc can out perform 357 and 44 and get into low end 454 loads. Cowboy loads are easily available but cheaper to load for hunting assume you will load your own

Well no. See I get 357 mag pistols can handle 38.
I got a 44spl revolver, I can load it up part of the reason why I got it for when I get into reloading I was not accounting how much hazmat shit I'm acquiring if I move. A 44 mag revolver would handle both, lever carbines I had no idea if they'd have different issues since they're loading into a chambered barrel when revolvers are using a cylinder and forcing cone.
This just opens up a bunch of different other questions I had but it does answer if it works, so at least it's an option. Thanks based anon.
>>
>>34228137
Fun little plinker and very easy to shoot. Goes through ammo like nothing, because the recoil is non-existent. Also it's pretty damn accurate even with the iron sights. I could hit the paper from 75 meters away. Some cheaper ammo might have issues feeding if the round has a lot of wax on it. All in all it's a super compact fun little thing that i enjoy to shoot along with .44 magnum Henry golden boy and Winchester M94 & M95.
>>
>>34226307
>I was thinking 45 Colt so I can do Cowboy action shooting
But a .45 Colt levergun is not period correct at all.

I really want either the cowboy or government 1895 to compliment my 336. Then a .357 336 so I can have a lever in each fun group.
>>
>>34238884
Forgot to add, that all of these options have to be pre-remshit
>>

In fact is was so much better than a Winchester that they only made about 6,000 over three years...
>>
>>34228553
>>34233596
Hot-loading .45 Colt is only viable for the 1892. Trying to do it in a toggle link gun will end badly.
>>
>>34238789
So can .45 ACP. At least that's closer in length.
>>
>>34239388
Where are you finding lever guns in .45 ACP?
>>
>>34233716
Funny you should say that, there was an article up here in syrupland about a woman seeing the Indian head on a rifle and complaining her way into the news.
>>
>>34228332
Update:
I just got a 45-70 1895 stainless guide gun. I also picked up a security 6 (also stainless) for matchy-matchy.
>>
>>34239124
Depends on just how hot you want to go. The win 94 and Marlins might be a little weaker than the 92 but .30-30 has a SAAMI max of three times .45 Colt. .45 colt in a toggle lock is just disgusting.
>>34239419
My point was that it might as well be .45 ACP in terms of historical accuracy. You'd be able to fit the correct number of rounds in the magazine at least.

you're in for pain and shoulder bruises. .45-70 has a pretty wide range of reloadings, from "huh, not as bad as I thought that would be" to "I sure hope I didn't break something".

I had a bunch of moderately warm reloads and I couldn't make it through more than 15 rounds till I couldn't control my flinch anymore.

Do it op, cowboy loads are fun as fuck to shoot. I had some hot rodded up to light .454 pressures. Much more power than .44, and lower pressures so less recoil and that means more accurate follow up shots for bears in my case
>>
>>34241357

>>
>>34239651
Its a tank, its fun to shoot, it's accurate. Buy the 44mag tho not the 41.
