As someone who has put ~2k rounds down range in binary mode I'd say they are a lot of fun but im not sure how practical they are.

I've done the Gen 1, Gen 2 and Gen 3 Franklin BFS triggers. You can get them going pretty damn quick if you get the cadence correct, it takes some practice before you can go full BRRRRRRRRRRT. Out of the box you will be doing rapid double taps ezmode.

Add as much or as little as you want/have a use for. Some people like irons only, most like some sort of optical sight. Same goes for a grip. Only thing you should definitely change is the sling. Get a good 2 point like a Snickers.

but on a more serious note the 75th Ranger Regiment tested ACOG TA01s way back in the 90s when they were first released and found them completely unsuitable for any kind of CQB work. The magnification is a big impediment to being able to PID threats at close ranges and it only gets worse at night. Their input led to big Army adopting the M68 CCO in the first place and they ended up issuing ACOGs only to squad leaders and officers who would be the last to enter any structures in CQB.

>>34226445
>weight
of all the places to save weight the optic is not a good one. Adding 15oz (at the top end weight wise) to get true 1x and 6x, plus better reticle illumination is a no brainer to me. That 15oz of weight realistically is not going to hurt me enough to outweigh those benefits

>FOV meme
If the optic stays on 1x most of the time my FOV is wide as fuck. If I see something through my optic that I need to PID I'm going to zoom in and in that case FOV is irrelevant cause I've already located my target and the wide FOV is only important for scanning.

>>34226457
>leaving it on max power

>>
>>34226379
Talking about the Grippod? No, they are sort of the worst of both worlds. Too big of a grip (unless you have monster hands), heavy, and the bipod feature isn't great. Plus if you stick them on a carbine, you'll find that you rarely if ever get any use out of the bipod feature anyway. Was issued one of these Grippods in the military, used it for a couple of months, then went back to a USGI VFG. On my normal civilian rifle I don't use anyVFG because I don't have as much mandatory bullshit stuck on the rifle foreend.

The magnification is a big impediment to being able to PID threats at close ranges and it only gets worse at night. Their input led to big Army adopting the M68 CCO in the first place and they ended up issuing ACOGs only to squad leaders and officers who would be the last to enter any structures in CQB.

I've tried using a TA01 for CQB training, and have used TA31s live and for training in CQB.

I agree that the TA01 is unsuitable for CQB. The reticle is built more like a traditional scope and the illuminated element is very subtle. The TA31 on the other hand has a massively bright element (even at night) that is very easy to get a look through.

I'd rather have a CCO for CQB, but a TA31 works. Between a TA31 and a variable power optic, I think the shooting experience is a draw. The 1x setting on a variable power optic is somewhat useless since it isn't true non-magnified and still requires eye relief. So since both the variable optic and the TA31 require eye relief and because shooting is happening with both eyes open, the variable has no advantage. The master race is still a good fixed power optic and an offset red dot.

Look even at modern operator guys- a lot of them are sticking mini red dots on top of their variable optics because they get that variable is also unsuitable for CQB.

Finding the 1-6 to be little less than what I want on a .308. Works when im just at the 100yd range. But when I get to a 500+ and shooting for groups, im finding it lacking.

I am able to and it's not as fast or as precise as with a red dot or LPV. Because of phoria it's a complete bitch to shoot small targets at close range with BAC (Think hostage rescue shots, placing a shot into a loophole, or shooting into a narrow gap like a doorway at an angle).

>>34226544
>no rebuttal only opinions
yes it's going great

>>34226559
The problem with the dual-illum TA31 is that in certain lighting conditions it gives you shit for illumination, like if you're in a dark room shooting into a lit street.

>Look even at modern operator guys- a lot of them are sticking mini red dots on top of their variable optics because they get that variable is also unsuitable for CQB.
Depends on which variable. The biggest reason to use a micro red-dot on your LPV is because you don't have daylight bright illumination in your LPV.

The Vortex Razor HD 1-6x has a better eyebox than most ACOGs and very good illumination. Look at what top 3-gunners are using and almost all of them are using variable power scopes even on short-range heavy matches.

>>34226604
Putting a dot on top completely fucks your cheekweld giving you very little tactile index for your headposition while shooting, making it a lot harder to bang out rapid-fire followup shots. The idea being that if your head is attached firmly to the stock, when the gun recoils your head is coming with it and the reticle stays centered in your vision. When you can't get any kind of real cheekweld the gun is recoiling while your head stays still and the reticle floats in your field of view.

If you go the offset/angled route it sucks for shooting off the other shoulder.

If you want higher magnification, that is something that can work. For general use though, 3-4x is good for intermediate range and fairly quick shooting. (This is all talking about a tacticool gunfight context, of course. )

Higher magnification on a battlefield makes it harder to scan, bring up the rifle quickly, and use it for suppressive or quick shots. There are guys who rock high magnification scopes, but those are specifically marksmen guys. A variable scope that starts at 3x and varies up makes more sense than one which starts at 1x.
>>
>>34226639

Cheekweld is important in CQB but FOV and target acquisition when you're within 50 yards of your opponent apparently aren't.

Your priorities are utterly fucked.

I figure shit opinions require shit responses. Case in point;
>The problem with the dual-illum TA31 is that in certain lighting conditions it gives you shit for illumination
And in every situation ever a variable is going to offer you inferior FOV while being heavier and bulkier and generally less useful in close quarters than a fucking RMR on an ACOG.

Like, this is what you're doing dude. Your countering general issues with variables by pointing out circumstantial flaws with the ACOG that you have less change of encountering than not. It's fucked, dude. In every situation, a variable is going to be weighing more, taking up more space, not providing a better 1x experience than an ACOG-mounted dot, and not offering a comparable FOV. Every. Fucking. Time.

>never seen what a good LPV looks like at 1x.
>never heard of shooting with both eyes open
if you still think FOV is an issue with a LPV at 50 yards you need to get your head checked. At 1x (perfectly adequate for that short range) the FOV on a lot of these scopes is 3 times wider than an ACOG's FOV and feels pretty much exactly the same as shooting with a regular red dot. If anything the eyebox is maybe more forgiving than a RMR's tiny window

>>34226717
There's no reason to shoot off your weak side shoulder in 3gun but there is if you have to use your rifle in combat. Nothing wrong with the micro dot but it's not strictly necessary with the right scope.

>>34226731
>still thinking optic FOV is important at that distance when you shoot both eyes open
k m8, i dunno what to tell you. Go to the range, set up some wide transitions (>90 degree swings) and try a good LPV vs a piggyback red dot. My experience has been that the LPV on 1x wins every time.

I'm building a ultra mega shitty ar15 with a $27 lego lower:

a $199 complete upper:

and a chinese ultra cheap lower parts kit. I'm also throwing a chinese optic and rear irons on it bringing the grand total to $305
