There's no reason not to issue one of these to every infantry platoon

>cost only a few hundred dollars
>easy to maintain
>can be used to safely scout your immediate area.
>can be used to spot for artillery fire.
>too small to be effectively shot down by AA.

What do you think /k/?
>>
[shoots drone]

If they were smaller, fit in a rack on the soldier's back, didn't take up both hands, and could self deploy and land then I'd agree.

Jamming
>>
>>34223709
>Implying terrorists can afford jam.
>>
>>34223666
The army has been using small RC planes and other drone-like things for at least 20 years, champ.
>>
>BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT

Have you ever heard how loud these things are anon?
>>
>>34223689
Doesnt Casey Neistat have one of those go pro drones that can be folded up in to a Nintendo ds size bag
>>
>>34223744
They can fly at a few thousand feet.
>>
>>34223750
They're manual. In order for it to be truly useful, it needs to automatically unfold itself or require no folding.
>>
>>34223725
Terrorists aren't the only notional opponent you know, although that said they can very easily afford jamming and as more systems become avaliable the cost and difficulty to acquire them will only go down.

It's going to be yet another technology race, and one that will see mil specific unit costs skyrocket as manufacturers offer systems with better signal processing, frequency hopping capabilities and simply brute force stronger transmitters to say their unit will work in any conditions, then a little while later the corresponding advances will arrive in the jammers as those companies in turn race to be able to claim their system counters all known drone threats, and on it shall go.

>>34223689
Autonomous flight capabilities are already becoming a thing in consumer units, likely the regulatory restrictions are what's preventing more notable advances in that area, although on the flipside some of the ideas being bandied around would see all drones required by law to operate semi-autonomously at all times in the future to allow governments to geofence areas and prevent drone flights at will. Since it's already tech that can be found in consumer units given ~5 years and several billion $ I'm sure we can see something similar offered to the military.
>>
>>34223666
>few hundred dollars
You wish, military contract would make it minimum 1k each
>>
>>34223820
you see, they kinda need to rugged so dumb fuck grunt could handle one and not break in few minutes to begin with

so minimum 1k is really on the low side of things
>>
>>34223830

my mavic is surprisingly durable, i wouldn't want to drop it a whole bunch but all you'd need to do to make it military-grade would be to strengthen the camera gimbal and maybe water/dustproof it a bit more. the biggest issue for small drones is wind, anything over 20mph and things start to get precarious.
>>
>>34223666
It's done at a company basis which is fine given US tactical drone ranges.
>>
>>34223689
one-handed controls actually sound the most difficult. You certainly can put all the controls on one hand but it'd make operating it rather slow. The other points are all possible though.
>>
>>34224418
Fuck that. Voice controls with eye tracking on a monocle display.
>>
>>34223765
Why? The folding is something a 2 year old could figure out.
>>
>>34224418
>>34224427
Do both - have a monocle display with a basic 2-axis head tracking for controlling the camera pitch and the drone's yaw (ie. you look left and it smoothly starts turning left; face your head forward and it smoothly stops turning).

Then just use a little remote with a single joystick for forward / backward / strafe left / strafe right, a button for automatic returning and landing and either a 2-way trigger or spring-loaded mouse-wheel thing for telling it to increase or decrease altitude.

With that you can control the drone with your head and your non-master hand - you could even integrate it into a rifle foregrip.
>>
We did. Instead of drones they were called UAV's. We had 1 for the entire company. Only 2 of us were certified to fly it. We had to activate QRF to retrieve it when the other guy crashed it. This was in 2009, the technology has probably improved quite a bit.

>>
>>34225074
This is all good until the operator looks anywhere other than where he wants the drone to go. For example taking fire.

>>34223666

>what is electronic warfare

you used to be able to hack predators using home made hardware available at radio shack, then the military implemented strict cyber security measures and encrypted everything

pic is the aerovision snipe,
>eo&ir cameras
>15minute flight time with 2 batteries per kit
>1600m range
>>
>>34225246
Easy fix; add a toggle button on the controller (you should probably have 2; one for that, another also to auto-return and land / take-off).
