I'm in the market for a low magnification optic that doesn't rely on batteries.
The attached pic is a Holosun red dot that has a solar panel built in.
I'd really prefer a fiber optic red dot, but all the ones i've found are either more than the rifle or cheap crap.
The intended use is for general plinking and possible competition use.
>>
>>34218505
Millet 1-4x with an etched reticle was pretty decent for a low price. I swapped it out for a red dot, but aside from a bit of weight it's a decent entry optic for magnification.
>>
>>34218505

That's a zero magnification.

Do you want none, or some?

See-all sights are no batteries but have no magnification and are a little weird.

If i could find one cheap enough, i'd use it.
But I'm a hipster, so that from that what you will.
>>
>>34218505
>doesn't rely on batteries.

May I ask why? Most are engineered to last a very long time on one little button battery.
>>

.
>>
>>34218505
I just got almost that exact same optic today. I got the HS515C but its basically the same thing but with the circle as well as the dot.

It works without a battery in it just fine so it should be ok for your purposes, just be warned if you shoot from under a covered area into a brightly lit area it won't be very bright since it uses the solar panels to decide how bright it needs to be. If you put a battery in it you can force it to stay on a certain brightness mode though.

This nigga serious?
>>

Jesus how new are you? It is a fibre optic. It lights up the reticle during the day.
>>
>>34218803
It's a water filtration straw, so you can drink from contaminated water sources while out on patrol.
>>
>>34218845
oh it looks like it would break real easy though. is it glass on the outside?

>now i know ur fuckin with me

No, that's a thing. Or was. Dunno if it's actually transparent aluminum.

t. guy who's step dad was a researcher on that exact project at Idaho National Laboratory.
>>
>>34220220
what did ur dad go to college for to research stuff
>>
>>34220229
Bachelors in Chemistry&Biology and a Masters in Chemistry.

Was going to go for his PHD, but never got around to it before he was retired.

Worked a bunch of other jobs before that.
>>
>>34220220

No, transparent aluminium is real now.

Scotty gave us the formula because he needed it to make a tank for the whales in the cargo bay of that Klingon Bird of Prey.

Afterward the company just kept making it.
>>
>>34220229
Apparently it's "harder than tungsten" once it's set in the mold. The whole goal of the project was to get a military contract to make blast-proof optics for missiles and such.
>>
>>34219120
iirc it's not actually metallic aluminum, it's aluminum oxide but is hard as fuck
>>
>>34220463
Yeah, it's aluminum oxide that's compressed by running nanoparticles or someshit through it. Or that's my half-assed explanation after barely understanding my stepdad's more in-dept but much more wordy explanation.

Once it's set, you ain't machining it.
>>
>>34220491
something something nitrogen added or whatever
it's aluminum oxynitride

1.6in can stop AP .50
>>
stealing your thread op

I got a savage 64 and between my bad eyes and the sights, I can't shoot past 25 yards because I can't see the target past the sights.

can anyone recommend a good enough scope for 100 or less? doesn't have to be variable magnification, just at least 2x
>>
>>34218677
Good job knowing nothing about the specs
It uses a battery as primary power and the panel as a charger
As well as the sight switching to solar power only during optimal light conditions to save even more battery power
If anything solar panels are meant to power very small simple components like a zero mag sight dipshit
>>
>>34222782
The panels don't charge the batteries. The solar supplements the battery and takes over if sunlight is bright enough, but CR2032 batteries aren't designed to be rechargeable.

>>34218505
I have a Holosun 510c and a Trijicon MRO. Solar is a great way to EXTEND battery life, but you do still need a battery.

If you're plinking you have plenty of time to change batteries, going completely battery-free via tritium and fiber optics are for hardcore operators and mallninjas.

>>34218505
Realistically, what's your budget?
>>
>>34218781
Instead it relies on you sending in back to Trijicon in 12 years to replace tritium.
>>
>>34223394
>being poor
And buying Chinese crap that you'll need to replace repeatedly shows you're poor because you're also bad with money.
>>
>>34223928
>in 12 years
This supposed to be an issue?

>I'm interested in holosun
>it's solar so it doesn't use batteries

Not only do I know for a fact that you don't own a gun, but you sure as shit don't understand how solar power works. It still uses a battery you dumbass teenager
>>
>>34218505
get gud at iron sights before using a crutch like a red dot.

always in life - get gud with the hand tools before stepping up to the power tools
that's fucking sage advice right there, kid. you're welcome.
>>
>>34225006
That optic can literally run without a battery in it. You need to be outside during the day for that to be the case, but it does work.
>>
>>34225180
Might as well just use something with an etched reticle if you only care about daytime usefulness.
>>
>>34218505
a good set of iron sights
>>
>>34218567
kys
>>
>>34224295
Replacing a common battery found in every store every few years (or even less depending on how often you actually use it) seems a lot more convenient than sending an entire optic to Trijcon and waiting a few weeks to get it back. Especially considering some people were charged up to $500 for it.
