>Military academy graduate is assigned a leadership position with no real military experience or job training.

Why is this allowed? They are pretty much just kids who graduated from college that maybe had a little bit more restrictions and they pretended to be soldiers for part of a summer.

What do they have to offer over just drawing officers from the enlisted ranks like in Starship Troopers?

>They're separate from the enlisted. They having different backgrounds from the enlisted makes it easier to order them to their deaths or execute them for dereliction of duty.

Might make sense for WWI and before that. Now, maybe not so much.

The idea is that they're creating middle management for the military.

It's an old tradition that makes no sense, as OCS graduates tend to be better leaders anyways. They literally get taught by both officer and enlisted to not be a total fuckup.

Face it

Since the beginning of time officers have always been the elite. You are just another peasant, you will never be an officer. Officers are a higher class than you, why even bother asking? You're just embarrassing yourself.

Officers are taught largely different skills and will spend only a single year of their entire military career in a direct leadership position (pl) if you think a pl' s job is to actually lead and not learn as much as possible before going to their pog ass desk position for the rest of their career, then you need to reevaluate.

they should drop the college requirement. then you can merit promote the best Sgts and SSgs under the age of 30 to 2nd LT.

A lot of officers are prior enlisted, they like them having a college degree becuase it shows critical thinking though. So in the US military they'll send all of the good NCOs to a board and if you pass you can go to college for free while pulling active duty pay.
>>
Officers give orders, men take action.

This is how it works. Don't like it? Don't join the military.

i'm sure the english degree my first S6 had was really critical to his ability to be OIC of Bn commo.
>>
>>34217689
Have you ever written a College level term paper? Even the BS degrees require critical thinking to pass.
>>
>>34217491
Not right away, they aren't.
They are supposed to learn their duties from their senior enlisted and superior officers.
Some ringknockers will suck, but are protected. They are the problem children.

That works well in sci-fi, not so well irl. Heinlein fully well knew that, being a USNA grad and all. You'll notice that he plays around quite a bit with the idea of governance by meritocracy in his work.

Anyhow, I digress. Officers spend 4 years at the academy training for their job. They don't need to be the best door kicker, or the most accurate with a DMR, or be able to throw a grenade the farthest, or lay down the most effective suppressive fire.

Their job is to manage the people who can do those things, and to make sure that those people are in the right place at the right time with the right tools to accomplish the task.

Here's a simple break down for you; flag grade officers worry about the why of things. Staff officers worry about what gets done. Field grade officers worry about when it gets done. NCOs decide how it gets done, and the lower enlisted make it happen.

You're asking why officers don't know how to make it happen. That's not their job. That's what Joe is for.

yes

college isn't this magical place that makes people intelligent, educated, and capable of critical thought. it isn't even great at being a filter for people with those qualities. when you can get an art degree from a state owned party school and then go to OCS right after enlisted basic. resulting in a female signal officer company commander that tries to hold a week of unnecessary field training in the middle of a typhoon.

you know technical warrant officers go on probation that first year. if they don't cut it. they go back to their prior enlisted rank and mos. you can do the same with officers.
>>
>>34217558
Which is a splendid way to gut your NCO corps, pulling all of the best brains out, while simultaneously creating an inept junior officer corps who don't know how to do their jobs because they were busy becoming a superior NCO.

Officers and NCOs do not do the same things, nor do they have the same responsibilities. There's a whole list of reasons why mustangs tend to level out at O-3/O-4. Sure, there are the exceptions who make it past field grade, but they're very few.
>>
>>34217558
The office corps must be able to write and use computers effectively. If we went straight to making uneducated NCOs into officers the military would turn into Mad Max Fury Road
