Just in: SDF forces have now breached into western Raqqa. There is now heavy fighting in the Al-Romaniya district.

An Afghan commando Saturday killed two American soldiers and wounded two others during a joint operation in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said, in the latest so-called insider attack on international forces.

At least Raqqa taking pressure away of DeZ and Iraq, because IS is claiming that reinforcements are coming in from these places.
>>
Let's see if I can do a fact post on Raqqa.
- position: smack in the middle of northern Syria, 40 km east of the Dabqa dam. In the north is Kobane, in the east is Deir es Zur.
- area: since the Euphrate river has allowed for irrigation, Ragga is the center of perhap the second or third largest farming area of the entire Syria.
- population: Approx. 220.000 in 2012. Current pop after N number of refugees leaving and entering: unknown
- strategical: to the SDF and the kurds, this area is the center of the area they can have any hope of holding once the war is over. Should they fail to take it, they'll be left with only a narrow and vulnerable stripe along the border to bridge their key holdings. Possible failure is not an option but a disaster.
- opposition: some numbers quoted are 3-4000 ISIS fighters. Could be more, could be less.
- SDF forces: could be 30-40.000? Trouble is, each victory eats away forces both to casualties and to holding units. While the locals might be friendly there are many third parties wanting to move in at first opportunity. On the bright side they have US CAS support and the Russians are benevolent so far, and the Turks do not have the strength to move in this deep that quickly.

This battle could take months. I am not worried that the ISIS can win. I am worried that the big picture can change during or after the battle, inviting to new battle there with other factions.

Yes IS retook division 17 by turning it into a kill zone with landmines, artillery fire and IS was able to reenter the base using tunnels. SDF was forced to pull out today with the first counter attack since the battle started.

>>34216587
Other than that heavy fighting in Daraa with no movement by either side plus some SAA loses including a tank, some rebel loses as well. Also heavy fighting by the Palmyra silos with pro SAA sources claiming advances near Arak.

Apparently US forces now bomb pro government forces on a daily basis. Pic related is from the area east of Taqba where SAA and SDF met recently. Did SAA/allies actually attack SDF? Which excuse does the US have for these strikes?

I still keep wondering which budgets the Americans are putting the bill for this campaign on. Obama could not even get the congress to DISCUSS the war against IS. Trump, even with the congress in his pocket, have not even tried yet. So who pays? I know the war against Saddam's Iraq was paid with loans from China. How are they doing it this time?
>>
>>34217717
In the end, the taxpayer always foots the bill

>set up a deconfliction zone
>"the zone is there to protect FSA troops at Al-Tanf, only intent of US is to fight ISIS"
>strike government militias outside the zone
>>
>>34217729

Well yes. But everything comes at the expense of something else. Chinese bond loans might not come at more than a 2% interest, but they will have to be paid off eventually. I have yet to hear any number in even the loosest definition to hint at the cost for the ongoing operation.

After the Saddam's Iraq war, the US had tapped into every storage they possess. Norway, Germany, Philippines iirc - the supplies of ammo and big guns ran pretty low. It took a decade to replenish them, if they ever completed it. The current campaign is of course on a much smaller scale troop and gunwise, but those sorties are not cheap and nor is the wear and tear on the planes themselves. Special forces don't make do on MRE's and old gear either.

So, where is it going to hit? Social services? Infrastructure? Military investments? VA?

Families or sympathizers of IS members who willingly stuck around, without a doubt, but there have also been fleeing civilians that IS actually prosecutes or kills to order to discourage others to do the same. Raqqa isnt the end of ISIS
They have a global network, that of which we've never seen before.
If it's not the Middle East, it'll be elsewhere with some of their other constituents

I can only really see a collapse/splintering of ISIS when Abu Bakr al Bahgdadi is killed. Once the personality that people have been swearing their lives to is gone, others will try to take the role, that is, unless ISIS has that planned out too

So what?

The more brutally Muslims under ISIS are killed by either us or ISIS, the fewer will join their cause or lend them any support.

And I'm supposed to feel sorry for some fucking sand nigger animals who just months earlier were bragging about their executions with pornographic videos?

Get fucked you worthless babby-brained little child.

The next step in the prosecution of war against ISIS is the detonation of an enhanced radiation weapon over their population cluster, to ensure their seed dies in the womb.

The C-130 is a flying Swiss foloding knife. Quoting wikipedia: "he Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft designed and built originally by Lockheed (now Lockheed Martin). Capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop, medevac, and cargo transport aircraft. The versatile airframe has found uses in a variety of other roles, including as a gunship (AC-130), for airborne assault, search and rescue, scientific research support, weather reconnaissance, aerial refueling, maritime patrol, and aerial firefighting. It is now the main tactical airlifter for many military forces worldwide. Over forty variants and versions of the Hercules, including a civilian one marketed as the Lockheed L-100, operate in more than 60 nations."

I have been passenger in a C-130. It was not a comfortable ride. But it it built to do whatever it has to.
>>
>>34223297

Why not? There are lots of the Afghan Special Forces and they are trained by the US. Of course they do operations together. And of course they are infiltrated up to the neck by taliban, IS, ISI, you name it.
>>
>>34216347
>strategical: to the SDF and the kurds, this area is the center of the area they can have any hope of holding once the war is over.
Unlikely. The kurds have little ambitions beyond their ethnical homeland, it was hard enough for the US to talk them into participating in this offensive. This wouldn't fly with the syrian government and all other countries in the region that all have an interest in keeping their kurdish populations at bay. Autonomy of their ethical homeland will be hard enough to achieve.
>>
Why there's nothing happening in Iraq? Are they counting on IS moving most of it's forces to Syria before they start moping up rest of the country?
>>
>>34224091

I was looking at the map and the wiki and a few articles when I wrote that. One thing I could not find was the pre-war never mind current percentage of kurds in Raqqa. You are saying that this is not kurd homeland?
>>
Ooookay. Iran is now airlifting food to Qatar.

>>
>>34224182

Forgot the link. Here you go.

https://twitter.com/24raqqa?lang=en&lang=en
>>
>>34224140
the kurdish pre war population of raqqa is almost non existant, only arabs there. Same goes for much of the territory they'v already captured from ISIS. The territory where they make up significant parts of the population is concentrated close to the turkish border.
>>
>>34224275

I did see a claim somewhere that the US wanted the arab/non-kurd part of SDF to front the Raqqa assault but seeing how most of SDF are kurd I didn't consider it. Which tribes are dominant in Raqqa, then? It was meant to be the IS capital but right now I can't see why.
>>
What the hell is Saudi Arabia and the other Arab states going to get out of blockading Qatar?

All it seems to be doing is pushing Qatar closer to Iran.
>>
>>34224727
Qatar has geopolitical goals other than being an SA puppet, hence why they need to go.
>>
>>34224772
But what are Saudis gonna achieve by doing this? There are many countries that show support to Qatar unless Saudis are going to invade Qatar which btw is possible since most of the world will close eyes on Qatar because most eurocuck countries support Saudis.
>>
>>34224853
Qatar foreign policy often undermines SA hegemony in the region and Trump basically gave them free reign.
>>
>>34225065

Here's the part I don't understand. Qatar supports jihadist? But if so, how come Turkey - who supposedly want no truck with islamists - support Qatar? Is this the same Turkey who possibly were buying cheap oil from IS, or is it the Turkey who at at the gulenists throat?
>>
>>34225128
Presumably Turks themselves want to contain Saudi power.
>>
>>34225193

So this isn't about the Turks wanting a naval, or air, base in the Persian Gulf? Frankly I don't even know if Turkey has much of a navy.
>>
How believable is this claim of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi being killed?
>>
>>34225279
about as believable as the last 20 ones
>>
>>34225193
Turks want to became a big player in the region, that's why they're supporting Qatar.
>>
>>34225265
Turks already had a deal for a military base in Qatar, this whole thing just fast-tracked it.
>>
>>34225128
Hard cash is also important. Qataris are rich, like conspiracy Jew level rich. By backing them, Erdogan is hoping it will attract some of their billions into Turkey which will help boost Turkish economy, stabilize the Turkish lira and keep Erdogan beloved by his people.

"Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ."

It's in the bible so all christians should be slave owners, right?

And then there is... "Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord."

Holy books can be good things. They can also get a little bit outdated. And when they are, it isn't the people that has to adjust or become irrelevant. Christian popes and their lawmen and executioners used to run the world ragged. Now it is the imams who need to learn their place.

Well, ask a jew to eat pork? The only reason the muslims are being run ragged is that the imams are allowed to hold political power. Until their people shove their clergy to the wall and tell them to mind their own fucking spiritual business, it will continue. And we in the west should not pretend we are that much further. Priests had lots of local power here well into the 20th century. What's that, can't buy beer after 6pm? Said who? Oh.

http://www.pewresearch.org/methodology/u-s-survey-research/frequently-asked-questions/

You do realize that verses of the Quran explicitly call Muslims to kill disbelievers? The Quran is considered by Muslims to be the direct word of God.

I'm not that "Christian Fundamentalist" you referred to earlier, but if you think that people who acknowledge that many teachings of Islam cause violence have to be bigots, racists or fundamentalists you are delusional.
>>
>>34227528

I am no fan of muslims and I am not a christian. Faith is bigger than which book we subscribe to or not. My use of the word 'christian fundamentalist' was meant for the Pew Institute, which happen to be one of the wealthiest groups on the planet and has a clear religious direction which they take some care not to advertise on their website.

I know the quran part about killing disbelievers. The fact that the western world has millions and millions of devout muslims who do not spend their days cutting nonmuslim throat, leads me to believe that there is some sanity in that camp as well. In my own country there has only been one single massacre in centuries and the guy who did that considers himself a christian crusader.

Basically? I think the guys who have gone the terrorist route have been losers in their own communites and easy targets for the religious leaders who make sure their own lives are not put on the line as they talk the losers into going boom. That's not a result of islam. That is a result of political goals through religious brainwashing.

but what about people in areas that IS controls who dont revolt against them? True, they are terrorized when they do try, but I cant help but think that there are large segments of the population of a city like raqqa that is OK with isis. The same people who would gladly take up arms (and have) when IS is winning, and will turn around and pretend to be civilians when the sdf and americans show up. This is what the anons hating Muslims are really talking about itt. Its not that every muslim is beheading people in the street, its that they are more or less silently approving of it and doing nothing to combat it.

>>
>>34227844
Millions and millions of western Muslims don't start installing sharia law because they're still a minority and would fail. What happens when you've got neighbourhoods full of muslims in belgium, france, germany or england? They get radicalized. Can you name another christian-motivated terrorist attack in the last ten years besides Anders Breivik? You see, I don't doubt many muslims are peaceful and muslim societies CAN be secular (e. g. Turkey until lately). Islamic societies just tend to opress their perceived opponents like no other religious group nowadays. The fact that this religious hatred is used for political reasons (e.g. by Saudi-Arabia or Iran) doesn't mean that the very reason for this hateful and violent ideology is the religion itself.
>>

NEW YORK: Two naturalized Americans from New York and Michigan have been charged with terrorism, accused of operating on behalf of Hezbollah in the United States, Panama and Thailand, U.S. officials announced Thursday.

Ali Kourani, 32, and Samer el Debek, 37, were arrested on June 1 in the Bronx and just outside Detroit, respectively, U.S. officials said. They appeared before U.S. magistrates separately.
>>
>>34227930

Revolting is a pretty scary thing when the occupyers have spies in every house and civil-clad police in every street. Ask the East Germans. I recall that as much as 40% of the adults were having neighborhood espionage as a job number two. And of course, all the military and police patrols were done two and two and at least one of them would always be married and have children. Once the state gets power enough, you start to get scared to even THINK of rebellion. But sure, a number of every last ISIS stronghold's civilian population were joyous to see them arrive, and kick out all the corrupt and brutal local government. And shutting up when they found out that the new guys cared even less. And I am sure that in the endless streams of refugees there are still going to be a lot of IS fans. If they get peace, new homes, new jobs and their families expand, they will do what all the other vanquished systems' people always have done. Stopped talking about the bad old times. Europe, Asia, America - we coped with our losses and bought cars and TVs and lawn chairs. I hope the ones who thought IS was the future ends up in lawn chairs too.

Okay. It doesn't matter. I won't tell muslims or any other religious faction how to live, as long at the government of my own country is willing and ready to expel any foreign priest that tries to talk people into violence - and imprison those who are not foreign. As long as justice reigns, that's religion enough for me.

Christians had a 700-year head start, with centuries of collapse and resurgence, plus religious evolution as a byproduct of being centered in a fragmented Europe.

Besides the Abassids, Islam has stagnated for many centuries because its center is a Mideast that is dominated by a handful of large, domineering states at any time before modern European colonization, all monopolizing the narrative of the religion (and still do now).

The US is very close to completely pulling out of Afghanistan, the NATO mission has clearly failed and virtually all of our other partners have already withdrawn.

Afghanistan as a state will devolve into territories based on ethnic/tribal groups once again and descend further into instability once the central government collapses.

Who knows, maybe Kabul will hangon, but the south and east of the country will go to the Taliban swiftly once we pull out.

Or being scared shitless any longer. How is morale in the SAA these days? I know that swaggering when you are out of bullet range is the normal way of things, but after all their de facto victories the last half year the SAA should not scare off easily from a fortified position?
>>
>>34234110
moral is okay in Deir Ezzor i would assume , most of forces are focused on eastern front to reach Deir Ezzor now , they have much more hope then before

Are they still prancing around in groups in the open begging for rockets or are we talking disciplined veterans under proper leadership? There has to be something special if they have held up this well for this long. Who is the commander?

Deir Ezzor defenders are hardened veterans .Also they have excellent leadership.

Issam Zahreddine is commander of Deir Ezzor defense.

This is him

I googled him briefly. I get the distinct impression that he is sort of a Zhukov. More surprised to see that he is a Druze, not a muslim, and still holds that high a rank.

One of the things I miss while following the middle east conflicts, is the lack of distinct leaders to watch the progress of. Granted it is hard enough to even keep the faction apart, but once in a while it would be nice to have a face to relate to.

I found this one too. One gets the impression that he is the hands on, up front, kind of leader - even though these clips are propaganda of course.

>>

At least Ashcroft is consistent. He is on the board of whatever-Blackwater-calls-themselves-this-week and has Israel Aircraft Industries International among his customers. Ashcroft is a member of the Assemblies of God church, and is a gospel singer/writer.

In other words, he should fit right in.
>>
>>34234422
Lions of Rojava aren't SDF and I fucking hate kurds
>>
>>34234395

SDF is composed of several military groups; kurds and arab. The YPG are by far the biggest of these groups. I am not entirely sure if the female wing, the YPJ, are also part of the SDF but they have been an important part of the war in the north - back when the battle was for Kobane, one in three kurd fighters was a woman. Both YPG and YPJ accept foreign volunteers but the majority of their troops are syrian kurds.
>>
>>34234435
You do realize the kurds make up the majority of sdf?
>>
>>34234462
I'd rather join the arab parts, kurds are right up there with albanians and eastern europeans in terms of my most hated groups here in NYC
>>
>>34234485
you are in america, just join the airforce/navy/army/marines/whateverelse unit you have there if you want to fight
>>
>>34234485

Why? What have they done to you personally? Or the albanians or the eastern europeans for that matter? Dislike I can understand, that 's how we deal with the world. Hatred should have a proper cause.

Syria is not a good place to volunteer for any foreigner anyway. The YPG take better care of their foreigners than any other group I can think of, but you are still underfed and underpaid compared to security staff work anywhere else in the world. Worst case scenario isn't dying but being kidnapped on the street and held for ransom. The last guy from my country who went to non-ypg parts of syria, was held ransom for half a year then sent home in little boxes when the pay came too little and too late.
>>
>>34234525
I'm from South Africa, I just work here on a visa that will expire soon

>>34234538
Dislike is probably a better word, none of those groups have ever done anything good in the 4 years I've lived here

The albos and eastern euro's are the laziest shitbags at work, they do nothing and leave twice as much work for everyone else

Kurds in general just act feral despite being in the first world
>>
>>34234184
Yeah we've seen that when IS overran two huge army depots within a year which were guarded by like 5 soldiers and IS got they hands on couple hundred tons of munitions, which funny enough weren't destroyed by airstrikes afterwards.

>can you tell wheter the rebels are actually syria
well it depends on the area. take for example the closest front lines (ex front lines to be accurate) to where i live: the towns of Mou'adamiyah, Dariyah, and Khan Al Sheikh. as far as i know, there were very few foreigners in there (most of them Tunisians who came in 2012). In general, the closer you get to the borders (Idlib in the north, Dar'a in the south), the more foreigners there is.

>why they took up arms?
that's a really complicated thing, but here's what you need to know: Assad's inner circle is a group of vicious thugs. city dwellers tend to be secular-ish and relatively wealthy (in part because of their ties to influential insiders in government) while people from the country side tend to be poor, marginalized, ill educated, and extremely conservative, hence why they went up in rebellion.
in reality, the revolution is less about sunnis vs alawites, and more about village vs the city.

>how religius the average population is (shia/sunni conflict)?
I answered that above. Shias are more fanatical than most people think though.

>>
>>34230141
Mason here, you're actually off your rocker. Free Masonry is much more about having a close fraternal organization bound by a higher power than seeking any form of political power.
>>
>>34235133
lmoa Yarmouk is very far from where I live. there once used to be Nusra 15 minutes from where i live, but that was like 4 years ago.
as for the media coverage, it's a mixed bag really. mainstream outlets frequently engage in cherry picking and spreading cheap propaganda, but at the same time, the pro assad "independent" outlets are so far up their own their asses and are just as blind to anything that contradicts their narrative as their rivals.
there are a couple of sites that provide accurate analysis. In general, i would say that western mainstream media does exaggerate the SAA's crimes, but not as much as pro Assad people make it out to be.

I think the kurds have a right to independence, though i believe that they are as authoritarian as everyone else in this conflict, and that thier economic model is unsustainable in the long run, and as a result, they will not bring more happiness (or peace) for the people living in their territories.

if you have enough money, life is good. the worst thing is the conscription really, as most males leave the country shortly before they turn 26.

syria is an authoritarian third world shithole just like all the others throughout the world. there's no independent media, weak property rights, and the laws are rigged so people not connected to the government are not allowed to make money.
