It's true. For a while /k/ thought the 'ak is based on the stg!' thing was a meme but it's actually true. Schmeisser and his rifle were recruited a few years before the completion of the design.
Sure Kalashnikov probably helped out quite a bit but I wouldn't say he 'designed' the ak.
