Honestly, PSA and DDI got close, not quite there but close. The thing that bugs me is that CHF chrome lined barrels are something that US companies already do for AR's all the time. It'd add $50-$100 onto the MSRP but would be a feature that would instantly make the rifles more appealing. The bigger issue of course is the shitty quality control and, as you said, cutting corners on materials, not even just the "type" when we think of castings vs billet cut vs forgings, but rather the actual type of steel they use.

Get it's bayonet lug restored, get some decent looking furniture (doesn't have to be Egyptian, might go Soviet/Russian or something), and probably get it refinished/surfaces polished up so it's smooth as butter and doesn't have the awful Maadi finish. Yes and if you're talking about the Vepr FM then regular mags will work in those too. Sporter VEPRs need a bullet guide installed to reliably feed from normal mags.
