I just got this rifle like 2 weeks ago and I'm already thinking about the next one. I only have 20 8mm rounds. What is wrong with me?

Help me, Obi Wan /k/enobi, you're my only hope.

See, I'm already at six milsurp rifles, and I'm now thinking about a MAS 36 or an Arisaka. I really like the idea of a Type 38, but the Type 99 uses the same bullets as .303, which would make reloading simpler (and Type 99s seem to be cheaper). At some point, I should get a Carcano, too.

First, I need some 8mm and some dies.

Those are two boxes of 1939 Manufactured Nazi German 8mm Mauser Ammo.

"Patronen s.S." stands for Patronen Schweres Spitzgeschoss or a cartridge with a heavy pointed bullet. They're corrosive berdan primed milsurp.

They're really nice rounds, but they're getting scarce and you might want to consider keeping them for their value as a collector's piece.

I was using an analogy to the classic idea of finding rare cars tucked away in a barn. The idea being that someone doesn't know what they have and sell it for cheap.

Also yes, the 556s originally in America were made/imported with M4 stocks, but later they switched to the "Classic" model with the folding stock. My friend couldn't find the rails that attach to the foreend, I've been meaning to see about getting replacements, but I'm lazy and it's low priority.

It's a Gew98 that was later (probably in 1939) converted to K98k specs. It's a K98k now, so that's what I call it. I did scratch my head for a while trying to figure out what to put down in my bound book, though.

>>34214872

>>34214855
>Then that's what you should get. It's also totes superior to the T99 aesthetically.

I agree. The thing that's really drawing me to it is actually the cartridge. I like the idea of an early intermediate round, and I'm interested to shoot one.

>My goal for the immediate future is to get rifles from each of the major combatants in World War II. I've got four so far (with detours for a K31 and an SKS).

Are you me?

Probably not because the second part of Phase One is getting one of each of the main families of American cartridge rifles too.

Also, I got the Arisakas a few weeks ago and haven't fired either of them yet, nor have I purchased any ammo. I don't actually go shooting very often.

>one of each of the main families of American cartridge rifles

That's a cool goal. So it's going to be the Model 1873 through the AR15? I can see a poor sporterized Krag and an 1873 (I think). Seems like high time to get one of pic related.
>>
New to milsurp. Any suggested sites for good gear? I've got guns but I'm looking for stuff that would be good for general camping and outdoors things
>>
>>34218362
you want the other milsurp thread
>>
>>34218338

I'm stretching it back to the 1866 (Though an 1865 is high on my list of secondary purchases). For simple financial reasons I'm excluding the Spencer and Henry (for now). Phase Three will include muzzleloaders going back to the Kentucky Rifle and Brown Bess.

I bought the Krag as my first purchase after making the decision to start seriously collecting. I kind of regret it, but I think I'll try to get it restored.

For the AR-15 I'm kinda torn since I already have one and I'm planning on building up two more, but they won't be milspec. I'm considering getting a milspec repro (like the GAU-5/A/A from Troy) or just claiming one of my shooters as my "M-16."

I'd love a Garand, and I eyed one (and a couple of carbine) at the gun show this morning, but right now I've got a bid in on an auction, so I can't spend any more money until that finishes. A Garand is high on my list, but they're also some of the most expensive basic milsurp around. I'm kinda hoping the South Korean ones will come in and depress the prices.
>>
>all this talk about Garands and Carbines being expensive
>got both for 700~ from the CMP
>>
>>34218405

Everytime I go there they only have the ones with replacement stocks that are in shitty shape, or the sniper variants without any actual sniper bits that are way more expensive.

One of my great regrets is not deciding to get into 'surp earlier and getting cheap Garands from the CMP.

That said, even then, compare Garands to Arisakas, or Mosins, or non-German Mausers, or even French guns. $700 is equal to or higher than those.

Well, here goes nothing.

Anyone have any idea of the model scope and mounting system used on the M1906 prototype Thorneycroft? It was the only example of the Thorneycroft program to accept an optic. I have the rifle, now I'm on a mission to make it a complete package and potentially double it's value.

I've searched high and low for leads, even contracted the British Ministry of Defense, as the only literature I've found mentioning the prototype was in a book published in 1981 by them called "British Rifles: Catalogue of the Enfield pattern room." They had nothing to tell me.

Basically, what are some examples of optics and mounts for British rifles ranging from 1890-1910? Rear mount is a square hole and front is a large dovetail.

If you can find me what I need I will be eternally grateful.

I love my new kar98, just bought about 300 rounds for it and going to shoot the hell out of it. Problem is my eyesight is shit so I had to replace the sight with a mojo sight. Don't worry though, you just replace the rear sight and doesn't damage the firearm... can just pop the original back on if I want to get its collectors value back.

I've personally found that my K31 (pictured here >>34214389) is capable of sub-MOA accuracy with GP11 and diopter sights. It's my favorite gun to shoot and I love the Swiss engineering. My bolt is super smooth and the trigger is amazing (second only to the 1895 for milsurp triggers).

The one downside is the stock iron sights are just a notch and post, like many other rifles of the period. They're good sights, and capable of fine adjustment, but still just a notch and post.

The bonus is that the best ammo for it is also the cheapest. GP11 is around 55 cpr at the moment, which is pretty damn good for what is essentially match-grade full-size rifle ammo.

Also, given that they never saw combat, they tend to be in really good condition. The part that is usually the most fucked up is the stock and buttplate, as the Swiss supposedly used them to knock the snow off their boots.

The crest is also a big plus.

And the serial for proof.

Webley Fosbery Self-Cocking Revolver in Scarce .38 ACP with Holster Sold to British Indian Army Officer
Manufactured in limited quantities at the turn of the 20th century. On discharge the recoil energy drives the entire upper frame back along the track recocking the hammer and advancing the cylinder. This example is chambered in scarce .38 ACP caliber. A total of 417 of these revolvers were originally manufactured in .38 ACP, but it is estimated that only 100 left the factory. The accompanying serial number research letter from Richard Milner Ltd. states that the revolver was sold by P. Webley & Son on September 19, 1903, to The Army & Navy Co-operative Stores Limited of London who sold the revolver to Major Campbell of the Indian Army on February 16, 1904. Major Campbell is General Sir Frederick Campbell (1860-1943). When he bought the revolver in early 1904, he was serving as the commanding officer for the 40th Pathans (1899-1906), an infantry regiment of the British Indian Army. While with the 40th Pathans, he participated in the Younghusband Expedition to Tibet (December 1903-September 1904). This expedition was a British invasion for the purpose of resolving a border dispute between Tibet and Sikkim and originated out of fears of a perceived Russian threat to British interests in India. The march to Lhase in August 1904 (which Campbell took part in) caused the Dalai Lama to flee to safety, ironically to China. Other career highlights include: second in command during the Malakand campaign in 1897 and during operations in Mamund country from 1897-98, and commanding officer of the Guides Infantry, Buner, North West Frontier in 1898 and 1 Peshawar Division from 1915-1919. He retired in 1920. The frame has "WEBLEY FOSBERY" and the W&S winged bullet logo followed by "38 AUTOMATIC" on the left side and an overstruck serial number on the right side ("7336" over "1126" believed to be a factory error; factory letter has serial number "1126")

I believe they are forged with post-forging work done on the mill, but I could be mistaken. Given the irregular shape, it would require quite a bit of machine time and wasted material if they were 100% milled.

And it's a Garand made after any war in which the Garand would have been used, so fuck if I care whether or not all the parts match. It's still all USGI, which is more than you can say for most of the Garands coming out of the CMP these days.

>>34223022

>C96 that I plan to shoot and modify?

what kind of modifications? Either way I HIGHLY recommend you don't buy a C96 and do any modifications on it. you'll instantly devalue the firearm and effectively remove it from the market.
>>
>>34223055
>>34223146
I plan to build a semi-auto M712 clone, which I understand requires making permanent modifications to the barrel extension by milling out the feed lips. Obviously I'd want to start with a non-matching C96 with less inherent historical value.
>>
>>34223169

better idea: take this m712 that has been demilled and remill it.

This. Please don't fuck with an actual working C96, matching or not.
>>
Hey fellas, I've got an M43 Spanish Mauser - "Fábrica de Armas de la Coruña" stamped n' all that made in 1953. It needs a new stock, and the dude I'm working on it for wants a military style milsurp stock for it.

Now seeing as that the original stocks for the things are fucking rare beyond comprehension, I need a list of stocks that the thing could be dropped into seeing as it's a Spanish Kar98K.

I'd appreciate the hell out of ya'll giving me a hand on this, because if not, then it's just gonna sit disassembled on a shelf in the equivalent of deep-depression for a good old gun.

(and yes, I am eyeing the various stocks on Liberty Tree Collectors, but I just don't know what the fuck to grab)
>>
So any anon know where a guy can find some decently priced 8mm? Or just any surplus 8mm overall?
>>
>>34223225
>Price: $3,600.00

ha, no
>>
>>34223375

on gunbroker there are a few Romanian 8mm spam cans. roughly 380 rounds for $225 which is $.59

but they are all corrosive.

>>34223404

If he manages to remill that thing to semi-auto he might be able to regain his expenditures.

The minute he fucks with the C96 he will lose damn near all that money.

How come my mosin has these gold rings on the ends of the handguards? I've googled around and never saw another mosin that has these. Is it super rare? I was planning on selling it because the bolt is super loose and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be like that. I had another mosin that had a super tough action, not sure if that was the result of not removing all the cosmoline, but the one I have now feels like the bolt can easily pop out of battery if the handle is hit slightly.
>>
Going to trade in my sportirised Swedish Mauser for a fully wooded one. Bolt matches the action and barrel just some of the other misc parts don't match.

It's in pretty good condition, barrel is very good.

Anything I should look out for on these? I'm more of a Lee Enfield man and don't know much about Mausers.
>>
>>34223563
>How come my mosin has these gold rings on the ends of the handguards

those are brass bands. Those were on the early mosin nagants and they kept them in the conversion to 91/30s. the rivets holding the front band in place are probably made of either copper or aluminum.
>>
>>34223563
It's just that they used brass, isn't it?

It's about the right price as far as I can see. There was 3 of them at the gun show yesterday for that price range. Sometimes you get lucky with a lowball, I got 2 Arisakas a few weeks back for $405, the lot probably should have gone for $500 or more.

Hey unrelated to milsurp but you're the only guy I know here with a Winchester 1895. I'm looking into buying a cheaper commercial model as a cool do all brush gun or hunting gun, probably in .30-40 as they're cheaper and that's a fairly easy cartridge to reload but if I can find one in 30-06 for a decent I'd rather grab that. How do you like shooting yours? I know yours isn't a commercial model but shooting wise it can't be that different. The only other lever gun I've ever shot a considerable amount is a Winchester 1894 that I grew up shooting, have you ever shot one of those and if so how did it compare to your 1895?

1895s have all the right lines and curves for me and I just love the way they look, the Russian models like yours even more so but I'm looking for something cheaper and that I don't need to worry about using and dinging it up. I'm 100% fine with buying a cheap gun with 0% bluing as long as it's mechanically good and the wood isn't terrible.
>>
>>34232535

>.30-40
>Cheap

Think you mean .30-30...
>>
>>34232535
The 1895 has a reputation for punishing recoil, mostly due to the stock design and being chambered for particularly large cartridges. The musket versions seem to get around this as a result of the extra weight of the stock.

in .30-40 you'll probably be okay given that it is somewhat underpowered, but it's something to keep in mind.
>>
>>34232549
he means that 1895s in .30 Krag tend to be the cheapest models, which is 100% true
>>
>>34232565

Ah, nevermind then...
>>
>>34232549
No, Winchester 1895s in .30-40 are in general on the cheap side compared to others in different calibers. 1895s weren't offered in .30-30. .30-40 is appealing for me in these rifles because the rifles are cheaper and .30-40 is a fairly easy cartridge to reload.

>>34232557
Yeah I've read that they're not entirely peasant to shoot but I figure that'd be another plus for .30-40 as it should be easier to underload it for just plinking while using full power loads for actual use and hunting or whatever.
>>

>>
>>34231691
I have a few, they are awesome, more accurate than you would expect. from a manufacturing and engineering standpoint, they are genius. it achieves what a 1911 does, with the simplest machining operations. The grip angle is trash, dirty, dirty, euro, trash. Shoot one handed, tilted to the left, apparently its how they were taught to shoot them, probably bs, but it helps. The grip angle sucks cocks, its bad.
>>
>>34232535
>How do you like shooting yours?
Its unfair to compare the 1895 to other milsurps. It's smooth, has a better trigger than anything (even a k31) and just handles and points incredibly well. Recoil, at least with my reloads, is no worse than a Mosin or other similar milsurp. The only difficulty you're likely to run into is reloading without a charger bridge can be a bit unusual at first. Overall It's a 10/10 rifle, at least in terms of fun and enjoyment.

>The 1895 has a reputation for punishing recoil, mostly due to the stock design and being chambered for particularly large cartridges.
Yeah pretty sure it was just the 405 chambering with that reputation, which also had a sharper curve to the butt than most other models.

Can anyone tell me anything about Czech 8mm surplus? No idea on headstamp or date, but it looks kind of rough.

Good ammo if it's been stored correctly.
>but it looks kind of rough.

Pics? Or at least describe what you mean by "rough". Generally, if the cartridge case has active corrosion on it that leaves discoloration behind when I clean it off I don't shoot that ammo. Can you still hear loose powder flakes inside the case?

Well, there's the problem. I'm trying to decide if I want to buy it, and the picture is a bit shit. This is the only picture (size and all). Looks like a mix of cupro-nickel and copper jackets, some corrosion, but it's really hard to tell.

I'm probably better off just getting PPU and reloading it. Anyone have any good loads? Any particular powder? I was thinking of IMR 4895 because I also intend to load for my M1, which sort of requires that powder.

Price per round? Also find out the headstamp.
>>
>>34233086

40 cents per round, but I think I've sort of worked my way over to the PPU idea. I need to get all the reloading shit anyway, since there are some bullshit ammo laws coming into effect soon (Califag here).

If you or anyone else wants in: https://www.outdoorlimited.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=am2420lecase

Thanks for the help.

Pass. PPU would be perfect if they only sold their proper 8x57IS loads in the US.
>>
>>34233130
Yeah, I can only find PPU soft points at the moment, but it's cheaper than the components bought separately. I'll just buy a bunch of 198 grain FMJ bullets and figure out some sort of load for them. Got any 8x57IS replica loads?

Red means some form of Armor Piercing.

Black (IIRC) means some form of Incendiary.

Green means standard ball ammo.

the carcano in general is a shitty gun. they feel cheap and flimsy, clunky, nothing is hand fitted with any decent attention to detail, use a shitty clip feed mechanism that always tends to jam and is rough to feed, bad accuracy, honestly im amazed one took out JFK
>>
>>34230646
yes. if you look at completed prices they are astronomical, rock island auction is where all the moneybag fudds who dont know shit or dont care go to bidding wars, you wont find any deals there
>>
>>34230646
>>34233152
to elaborate, they advertise their auctions with actual paper notices in the mail, and actual printed magazines and catalogs. the type of crowd who bids there are the old computer illiterate fuddy farts with bottomless pockets

44gr of 4064 on a 180gr bullet is a good budget load. My 98az seems to like it.
>>34233146
>bad accuracy
Carcanos have perfectly fine accuracy, so long as they aren't cut down and proper bullets (.268) are used.
>>34233152
You can always find deals or get lucky. Some of their stuff goes for outrageous prices but there are plenty of hidden gems to be found, even with the 15% auctioneers fee.

where do you buy your projectiles? do you go for boat tail or flat base
>>
>>34233330
Midway, Amazon, Natches, Widners. I usually just go for whatever's cheapest. 99.9% percent of the ammo I use is just gonna go into paper or cardboard.
