Hey guys, I've been really thinking about joining the military, specifically the Army. The thing is, I'm pretty scared and hesitant. I want to do something greater than myself, but I don't want to waste 4 or 5 years if I realize that it's not right for me. I've always loved military history and the mentality and the title of a soldier. My favorite people in history were all in the military.

I guess I just need to be convinced. Can you convince me to join the military? Pros and cons?

Is it worth it?
>>
If you aren't sure, don't. Plain and simple, you need to want it to do it.
>>
Hesitation can get you grilled at the base and killed on the field.

If you're hesitant now, I'd suggest you don't.
>>
>>34213808
I do want it, but doing research as a civilian and the reality of it are two different things. I only know what I've seen, that's why I want opinions. I'm sure there has been many successful soldiers that were hesitant to join at first.
>>
>>34213812
Not really, hesitant to join and hesitant to do well if I do join are two seperate things.
>>

Worst case, you'll hate it and have the GI Bill and VA home loan to fall back on once out.

Best case, you'll enjoy it or at least make good friends, then what I said above.

Worsest case, you'll enjoy it and become a lifer.

Now get your ass to MEG you ain't special snowflake.
>>
>Is it worth it?
In all honesty, not really. When I got out I was four years behind all of my friends who went to college. I had the GI bill, but that was it. I never got deployed, I never got to fight, I never even left the damn country. I wake up every day and wish I could go back in time and tell myself not to do it. You're better off not joining, there's no war so there is no reason. It's not the adventure you think it'll be.
>>
If you are wanting to do it for the GI bill and/or training that you'd receive in a specific MOS, then go for it. It can be a decent socio-economic ladder for the people that can't otherwise afford to do a 4 year STEM major.

Unless you do SF (18x) or psyops or some shit, you're going to be stuck in peacetime military vacuuming parking lots.
>>
Fucking do it or you'll be one of those middle aged overweight tacticool dad's that wishes they would have served when they were younger. And spends their time on /k/ either talking shit about the military or saying "yeah I 'almost' joined"
>>
I dont think there is anything weird about being scared or hesitant. Part of the training and transformation is meeting those things head on. Pushing through and conquering you fears. Plenty of the finest soldiers weren't born that way. The may have been in your shoes, but said fuck it and persevered. Its not where you start but how you finish. If the that military ideal is what you desire put your mind to it. You will find things inside you didnt know where there, all it takes is the right mindset.

this. over 9000 times: fucking THIS

I say it a lot, and weird neocons here get all ass mad and call me a poverty stricken retard or some shit. basically I'm from an extremely poor part of the rural south and my father was an illegal, so when I finished high school, I was in deep shit

I enlisted to make something of myself, but was a pretty boring mechanized 11B. I aimlessly drove around the Baghdad area in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. I'm omitting some shit, but I got blown up a piss load and retired young. While I was in, they gave me food and housing, and paid me on a pay chart. Now that I'm out, I have health care and a pay check ... but I can't ever run again, and I'm deaf in one ear, and I have brain problems. As in physical problems with my brain, inb4 assholes call me a cuck and make "bawww" jokes

so, is it worth it? that exact question gets asked every other day, and I don't type out a response each time, but I'm watching Korengal at the moment, so my ego is down since I was nothing special

>only you can decide, duh

Join but don't go infantry retard, find an job that will teach you relevant skills while your in or you know you will enjoy. Its really not that hard, and there are plenty of jobs to choose from. Also look at other branches if the Army doesn't have what you're looking for. Its that simple lad.
>>
I about to hit my 4 year mark. A lot of BS but I got to learn IT stuff, Uncle Sam paid for my BA in History, and I have over $50k saved. The fact that I'm only 22 years old and my GI Bill will cover grad school, I'm doing great. The military is only a gap if you make it a negative.
>>
>>34215291
I mean that's exactly why I want to join. One, I want to get training and discipline. Two, I can't afford college and really just want to learn something so I'm not stuck at a shit level job my whole life, not only can I learn a trade but also how to defend myself better with a firearm and just in general. But I kinda wanna join the infantry, I also kinda don't though.

Former army here, join the air force or navy. pay into the gi bill. get a remf job that translates to the civilian world.
>>
>>34220974
you get tuition assistance on active duty or GI Bill after. what gives?
>>
>>34213805
Don't Join, you have so much to live for and do at your current age.

If reading that just gave you at a hint of second guessing yourself, then really do not join.
>>
>>34222397
Both. After 2 years in service you're eligible for TA. Then after tp u get put you have all of your GI bill
