Would a Makarov be a good first handgun or should I save for a glock 17 or berreta 92fs instead? Also what other handguns do you recommend?
>>
A Glock or a Beretta isn't that much more expensive than a Makarov anymore, and you'll make the difference back in cheaper, better ammunition pretty soon anyways.

>makarov

just buy a hi point.

Why the hell are you asking us? You should get what you want to shoot. If you enjoy surplus slavshit then you should buy surplus slavshit.
>>
>>34212090
Get a Beretta M92S. They're surplus Italian police pistols that essentially have the same aftermarket as the M92FS, the only difference is the rounder trigger guard and the mag release on the heel instead of next to the trigger guard. Uses the standard 9mm you'll find at most big box stores and online, runs just about any standard projectile fine, and magazines are cheap as fuck.
>>
>>34212101
also desu if you're strapped for cash and want a good 'first gun' get an M206. They are around $250 and 38 SPL *only*, no +P. It's almost identical to a Colt Detective Special. Even a novice can take it down and replace parts.

Or, like I said, get a hi point. I really don't like semi-autos or 9mm, but it is a really decent round and C9 has a reliable action. More reliable than some more expensive pistols.
>>
>>34212104
i didnt know if there were other options that I had missed
>>
>>34212192
aren't hi-points supposed be absolute shit?
>>
>>34212140
thx i may get this as i never realized buds these. Are standard Beretta mags compatible with it even tho it has the heel mag release?
>>
>>34212212
Hi Points are decent guns, although they're rather bulky and heavy for what they are. The M206 that anon recommends is garbage though and they sometimes come with timing issues from the factory.

I would also like to know. I was looking at the p64.
>>
My first handgun was a makarov, not because it was all i could afford, or because it was the best option. I just got it because I loved the gun and thought it was sexy as fuck. Buy what you want, op. Just about any gun that shoots when you need it to is "good enough".

Compatible mags will have a cutout near the baseplate on the right side. Pretty sure most standard ones have that cutout on it.

some work some dont, have to be careful when you buy. Its been a while since I bought mine but i went with the 15 rounder stainless mags on berettas website. A little pricey but they will match my inox one day
>>

The Triggers are Pretty mushy and gritty, but for a 9x18 pistol, it goes bang almost every time you pull it.
>>
>>34212770
thats honestly some of the best advise i've about buying guns,as its pretty accurate
>>

The P64 is too light for what it is. A lot of people think the normal 6-round PPK is snappy- the P64 is even more so. It's a neat little milsurp gun, but not ideal for defensive or long-term range use. You can find modern police trade-in guns for pretty cheap. May as well save up for a police trade-in something-or-rather. I bought a Star Super B with my last college loan refund, and I wish I had used it for a trade-in P226 or M&P instead. Glocks command a higher price than M&Ps sometimes because of tacticool brand-obsession, but they're just as good if not better. For time and money it took fucking with my Model B to make it almost reliable I could have had an M&P and an Apex trigger (not like I'm a trigger snob anyway).
