P226, first handgun: yay nay?
>>
>>34211581
If you have the money, sure why not? Have you gotten a chance to handle one? If so, it's really just if you like it. Nobody but you can answer that, it's like asking someone else if a pair of shoes is comfortable for you.
>>
>>34211581
do you understand the concept of no safety and using a decocker? if so, sure, it's easy to shoot and easy to take apart and put back together.
>>
I went with a P229 in .357SIG as my first defensive pistol in 2005. I shoot IDPA with it and my only regret is not getting one with a beaver tail. It really helps with consistent high grip when in stressful situations or against the clock.

If I would do it over again, I'd get a 226 DA/SA Legion in 9mm.
>>
>>34211592
Should be getting licensed soon if everything checks out. I'd like a 9mm and I think the p226 is the prettiest modern handgun out there, but I've never handled one. I have no idea whether or not it's a good beginner pistol.
>>
>>34211605
they make a p226 with a safety.
>>
>>34211625
Being a blank slate might benefit you. Get in the habit of decocking and thumbing the hammer when re-holstering and it will be a super safe gun for carry. People give DA/SA shit for muh not consistent trigger, but after drilling firing from the holster you'll get the hang of it.

I placed 4th out of 30 at an IDPA match after only 2 months with my P229 against people with modified light trigger striker guns.
>>
>>34211581
Not a bad gun but not my personal preference.

If you really want one id recommend a police trade in or older west german one if you can. The german ones are really well made and the LEO trade ins are cheap.
>>
>>34211632
But why
>>
>>34211632
maybe if you live in a cucked state, I've never seen one in person
>>
>>34211581
Great first hand gun, problem is it will ruin cheaper hand guns for you.

They are very easy to shoot, which is great if you need to use it but you wont become as good if you invest the time to develop your pistol skills with it exclusively.

I got a P229 in 9mm as my first pistol many years ago. Absolutely love it, will never sell it.

The P226 with a safety is SAO, and shoots really well. Many competition shooters shooting the SIG classic pistols go that route.

Same type operation as a 1911, but shoots like a SIG.
>>
>>34211691
Presumably because Cocked and locked > Decocked

>>34211720
Same type of action, sure, but IMHO the straight pull trigger is the 1911s real selling point.

True, the straight pull is great. I put one of these fellas on my P229, and I feel it is an improvement.

Looking to buy a Sig. What is the real meme, Exetershit or West German Sigs are best?

A lot of you guys are mentioning the p229, what's up with that guy?
>>
>>34211836
It's just a compact 226
>>
>>34211836
Same gun for the most part besides barrel length and grip length. Same controls, same upgradable parts, mostly same styles offered. I've shot both extensively. I prefer P226 in 9mm, and my P229 in .357SIG or .40.

Hopefully my P229 experience can relate to what you'd expect with a P226.
>>
>>34211860
I was wondering about that. I would like a carry gun, but a full size would be better for the range wouldn't it? I should probably be looking for something that's better to practicewith for my first.
>>
>>34211876
p229 looks tiny, like you have tiny hands and need a tiny gun. i'd personally get a big gun
>>
>>34211876
I think a P229 is fine for range duty. It's only slightly smaller but it feels nicer in the hand IMO.
>>
>>34211876
if you get a 9mm 229, just don't try to shoot "range ammo" through it
>>
>>34211900
I'm not a big guy
>>34211903
thanks

Both the P229 and P226 are on the larger side, but they are really about the same size except barrel length. Both make great range guns, are good enough to compete with, are accurate and fun to shoot.

You may want to find a range that rents them. In New Orleans there is a range with both available, and you can even try an IWB holster with them to see how/if they print. I carry a P229 IWB everyday and it isn't a problem. I haven't carried a P226, but I'd guess it would be like my P229 with an extended mag.
>>
>>34211938
I shoot Tul, Monarch and other shit in my P229 9mm barrel with no issues. Wolff sells replacement lighter recoil springs for under $20 that will cycle anything.
>>
>>34211974
>doesn't know about the NJ State Police fiasco
>>
>>34211938
Why? I've shot all sorts of everything through mine. Haven't had a single malfunction in thousands of rounds.
>>
>>34211581
Sure. It's a great handgun. A bit pricey, but if you're okay with that, there is nothing wrong with the P226.
>>
>>34211944
People have put P229 slides on P226 frames and vice versa.
>>
>>34211979
I do know about their problems, but I've never had an issue with my 2004 vintage P229, so I can't relate.
>>
>>34211938
I'm sorry, I don't know what that means.
>>
>>34211632
>>34211691
>>34211698

The P226 SAO is like $200 more than a standard P226 and exists entirely because of an IDPA rule that if you want to compete in Stock Service Division with a DA/SA gun, you have to start in DA mode with the safety off, even if your gun can theoretically be carried cocked and locked (like a 92FS).
>>
>>34212010
Bad batch of guns maybe, bad ammo maybe. It wouldn't stop me from buying another tomorrow.

>>
>>34212012
And some like a safely carried hair trigger. (Compared to DA, or striker)
>>
Is the M11-A1 worth the price?
>>
>>34211581
I got a p226 as my first. I would recommend the SRT kit, as well as either the grayguns P-SAIT or PA straight if you like flat faced triggers.
>>34212074
At MSRP no, and people are going to give you shit for not having a "real" 228. Just wait for a used police 228 and send it in for Sig's $145 service + night sights package.
