First, the 5.56 part. At muzzle-200 yards, it's a phenominal round that dumps a shit load of fragmentation into the target and basically 'pops', while shooting flat as hell, and with almost no recoil. 200-500 it's still good enough and you can carry a shit ton of it. Ask a corpsman who's had to treat it and they'll tell you that they'd rather get hit with an AK any day.

As for the rifle, come on, it's modular to a fault, the action is so simple bitch-basic to be reliable yet with tight enough tolerances for incredible accuracy, and it can be made to fit nearly any infantry role in about 15 minutes with at most a wrench and a vice for tools.

Opr8turs shoot them out of 10 inch barrels. At 16 inches, the 5.56 loses almost a third of its velocity. The optimal barrel length for the 5.56 is 20 inches.

The m16a2 3 and 4 never had problems dropping tangos.

That extra velocity, made the difference between fragmentation and basically a hot fmj .22
