For fucks sake, this is why your shit keeps rusting. No, it's not the wrong oil you're using. No, it's not a faulty finish on the gun.

The foam in a lot of these fuckers is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. You leave your gun in one long enough, it's like holding the metal against a moist sponge. Only use these goddamn things for transporting your guns. Never for storage longer than a few days.

You ever wonder why pawn shop guns always have freckle rust on them? Now you know: Fuds and dipshits thinking soft gun cases are for storage, leaving their guns in there for MONTHS. Hey presto! Rusty guns!
>>
>"OMG but I am too poorfag for cabinet/safe wat do?"

No big deal. I was in the same boat for a long time. Just use gunsocks! Oil your gun, put it in one of these fuckers, and maybe drop in a silica gel pack if you have any from an old package. Done!

I shit you not, I kept half a dozen rifles in these shits, in a CLOSET, in the fucking MASTER BATHROOM where 4 showers a day happened. Worst possible place to store a firearm. Not one jot of rust ever.

A 3 pack is usually about $12 most places.
>>
hard gun cases are ok right
>>
>>34209935

no, foam holds moisture, it will rust eventually. Gun cases are for transporting guns, not long term storage.

A silica packet isn't going to do anything in a sock since they aren't air tight... Even with the two rechargeable dessicators in my weather stripped stack on I still hoover around 10% lower than ambient humidity...
>>
How the fuck do I store a rifle in humid ass weather with out a safe?
>>
>>34210027
> this is my setup

I recharge one of the desiccator packs every few weeks or so.

I also have a desiccator pack in each of my ammo crates. I only have to recharge these every couple of years, usually when I shoot through the ammo.
>>
>>34210161
>recharge one of the desiccator packs
Not that guy but what's this?
>>
>>34209714
>>34209935

you get these when you buy shoes/boots. they are in there for the exact reason OP described. throw some in your cases, and safe.
>>
>>34210143
vacuum freezer bags.
>>
>>34210185
> Eva Dry 500
When they indicate the silica gel is saturated, you plug them in for 12 hours to dry out the silica gel. By keeping up in it, I can keep my safe humidity at 15% below ambient.

I store my Winchester Model 70 .30.06 in a case and I've done it for years and so did the person who handed it down to me and it has never rusted. I live in Southeast Alaska which is technically in a rain forest.
>>
>>34210188

They don't do shit in cases unless they're air tight. They arguably make things worse as they attract more moisture.

It's a little plastic thing full of dessicant beads that you can plug into an outlet and the heating element inside drives off all the moisture thus recharging the media and then absorbs moisture when it cools down and keeps good until the front thing is no longer blue then you plug it back in...
>>
>>34210203
>>34210227
looks expensive for what they do, can't you just put them in an oven or microwave?

>>34210207
that doesn't seem to be a problem since they're inside the pack. If you dumped a bunch of silica beads at the bottom of a gun crate or safe or something and used that as a layer to put your guns on, then yeah, over time rust can actually develop since what the beads do is attract moisture and make it stick to their surface

As for the airtight thing....I dunno, man. Technically it makes sense but come on, how many packages where the silica packs are used are actually airtight?
>>
>>34210303
> looks expensive for what they do
> $20 each

They sell silica gel packs that can be recharged in an oven, but they're about the same price, and they tend to fall apart. Don't ever nuke'em.

>>
>>34210027
You're right, they're not a perfect thing. Still, the gunsock stops a lot of airflow, and one desiccant pack helps a bit. You ever notice how stale the air gets when you hide under your covers from monsters? Sheets aren't airtight either, but there's still a barrier.

I've had guns in cases since 2005, not a spec of rust on them. I don't even use heavy oil just light spray of clp. I check them every 3 maybe 4 months. live in the desert tho.
>>
>>34209935
Only if its one of those molded cases that is entirely plastic with zero foam inside.

This. I have a pile of them in my gun cabinet, scattered all around.

>>34210207
They won't stop rust if you store your guns in cases, but you shouldn't do that anyway. I drop one in the bottom of every case and in every gun sock, just for the added little bit of help it gives when I'm transporting the guns several hours, or keeping them in a case overnight on a hunt.

So mr Zed you're saying that by double my efforts I too can retain the pristine and loved finish on my rifles/handguns/rapiers and even tools and vehicle?! This is sounding too good to be true.
How much does this merical treatment cost! I'd be willing to pay 20, no wait, just FIFTY dollars a month to ensure my metals.

We've already got our first caller on the line, it's some faggot named BOOF and he wants to know how much the cactus is :\
>>
>>34215571
>They won't stop rust if you store your guns in cases, but you shouldn't do that anyway.

i've stored a rifle in a hard case with foam and a dessicant pack for well over a year and there's no flash rust on it anywhere

just take it out every few months and re-oil it
>>
Is it acceptable to use WD40 when I clean my guns?
>>
>keep my guns in cases, no rust
>dad keeps his guns in the wine cellar, surface rust galore

as always, Zed is full of shit
>>
>>34216044
Uhhh I think you have foundation damage at your house. By the sounds of it you've got water and moisture accumulating in your cellar meaning mold and critters are probably there too.

>>
>>34216837
To clarify, you can buy mini dehumidifiers off eBay for 10 bucks. Works for a few weeks and then you need to plug it into a wall a few hours o recharge it. These will last a decade. These shoe packets outs hoarding from stores last a limited time .
>>
>>34209714
this is why I live in a desert, a friend kept a .22 in his trunk all winter and it did not rust one bit and humidity is usually 20-30% here so almost never muggy and guns dont rust. I left a couple of my guns in my safe for 6 months they were put away dirty I had to leave and when i came back not a spec of rust
>>
>>34216592
Not falling for that one again
>>
or just buy a dehumidifier and do yourself a favor of drying out your nasty house
>>
>>34209714
I live in southern AZ, I have never had a gun rust.
>>
>>34217861
I want to set a humidifier and dehumidifier across from each other so they can battle to the death
>>
>>34209714
Costco sells gun safes for around 300$ as well. The Protector safes.

Vouching for this.

I live in a two room apartment and when I take showers it gets humid as fuck. I oil up my guns every few weeks but I keep them in gunsocks in a cabinet and they've been fine.
