Today is the 350th anniversary of the British equivalent of Pearl Harbor: The Raid on the Medway.
>Second Anglo-Dutch War
>be England
>suffered from the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London
>gotta mothball a sizeable fleet of ships because expensive
>put the vast majority of ships in Chatham, the primary English naval base
>eh, those silly Dutch wont do anything right?
>>34208430
>be the Dutch
>let's go fuck over the English really good this time
>figure out that they put almost all of the ships in Chatham
>to reach Chatham they'd have to go on the Medway river
>the Medway is a challenging river to navigate, now imagine doing this with a 17th century fleet and hope the English don't fuck you over
>seize the harbor chain fort that blocked the Medway
>encounter virtually no opposition all the way to Chatham
>Chatham has been reached
>tora tora tora.painting
>fuck over the defenceless English fleet badly
>capture several prizes, including the English flagship itself - named after the monarch himself, Charles II
>shoot up the surroundings, let the OG MUHRINES have some fun on the shore too
>leave without any problems whatsoever

We still own the decoration of the stern, its in the Rijksmuseum. Few years ago we loaned it to the Brits. Very impressive to be face to face with such a historical artifact.
>the English shit their pants so hard, that a sizeable portion of Londoners panick and flee north, thinking the Dutch will land soon
>Charles II became the laughing stock of the the European world
>meanwhile the Dutch are still laughing about pulling off the raids of all raids
>the captured flagship was too heavy to be used so it was scrapped, the stern piece now resides in the Rijksmuseum
