if you're buying a new filter just get something like an "expired" 3m fr-64. They cost just a little more than old russian filters and I have personally confirmed that even the expired 3m fr-64 and fr-15 filters can defeat high concentrations of chlorine gas. Theres a bunch of fr-64 on ebay for under $20
>>
>>34209840
If it's a Soviet-era filter, do not risk it. I have heard that after 1980 they stopped making them with asbestos in them but appearantly some made after 1980 have been found to have asbestos. Just don't bother with the Soviet filters, most of their masks are 40mm thread. My GP-5 can fit a C2A1 filter just fine.

Just going to add. Some of it is however just hearsay, one person has said that some late Soviet filters only have 1% white asbestos in them that isn't unsafe until the filter deteriorates. Either way you just shouldn't be buying old filters really.

Why does every red neck piece of shit adore the 556 platform?
Is this shit even effective? I hear horror stories all the time from operators claiming they shot some thing and the round just slithered right through, or shot some jihad in the chest 6 times but he kept going.

Yet I also hear some people say they have seen what a serious 223 wound will do and how violent they can get.

Does anyone have any statistics on this?
Is the x39 better in every concievable way?

Here's a video, I can't find the dissection one I had seen before unfortunately.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2qGndGZs-c
There has appearantly been a study done in Norway (I think) which showed GP-5 filters tested positive for asbestos, but I can't find the actual study or anything on it. At this point though I am not sure, people say they don't have asbestos, people say they do, or people say there's only a chance of it. I would take apart my GP-5 filter, made in 1974 according to the print on it, but I don't have the tools for it. Either way, I won't be using it, too much uncertainty.

ominous presence is actually one of the things considered when designing a gas mask.
avon rubber sells a mirrored lens for their M50/C50/M53 masks purely for "intimidation factors"

Pic semi-related, scariest mask I own probably.

>>34211278

That's an M53. It's like an M50, but with 40mm threads and a different voicemitter/outlet assembly.
>>
>>34211501
I do but from what I understand the metal is rather tough and thick, that and I don't want to make a mess or risk asbestos getting into the air if there is any in the filter. There's probably some power tools up in the barn I could open it up with but it would likely result in metal shavings everywhere.
>>
>>34211558
Yeah you have a good point

Honestly I'm really not that worried about cancer just cause we can cure most kinds already so there's that. But also I don't even believe any of the common gp-5 and gp-7 filters have asbestos so there isn't even a problem in the first place

and lucky me the fear mongering drives down the prices.

I own the Israeli mask second to bottom left. I love it because it doesn't look otherworldly, it looks more like something demented from this planet. I could just be confusing it with the Pyro's mask, or I could just like the DKoK too much, though. Made a hose filter for it, used it as a Death Korps mask for a costume competion a few years back - when I was really vehemently into Warhammer.

>>34210252
In my opinion, the S6 or the Avon S10, but that could just be the fact I'm really into the Cold War-era SAS, and the fact they explicitly use masks for the shock value.

I was actually about to post this in QTDDTOT, but this thread is probably more appropriate.
Do I pretty much need to budget to spend $150-250 to get a mask worth a fuck? I've been looking into lower cost surplus masks, and they generally seem to be pretty useless.

Was also one of the first masks to use a solid rubber facepiece, rather than chemically-soaked fabric, rubberized cloth or leather. Was very bulky and fragile and only used by machine-gunners, artillerymen, and engineers. The U.s. tinkered with them and copied it's principles into lighter, more durable designs.
>>
>>34212688
Israeli civvie? If you are actually going to use your mask in a life or death situation I recommend using it as little as possible if you are not going to use it for a legitimate purpose as you may lower the quality/break the materials of the mask with alot of use. For LARPing any surplus russian mask is good and they are also very cheap. I wouldn't use them for a dire situation tho and Isreali masks are pretty uncomfortable.

Black ones are later production, color doesn't specify any role or partcular usage, it's just Russia deciding that the white rubber they used before was shit (it discolors and degrades much faster than black), and then made the switch t black rubber in the 80's.

yeah I don't really have the capacity to remember all those numbers for literally every single military related item
I'll just call it by the nickname if it doesn't mean anything to you.

in a quick search the only hard testing i came up with was by the iwm and they were still pretty tight lipped about what they tested. your telling me that china used asbestos carries about as much weight as my telling you that i fart pixie dust. same problem with that infographic made by "someone who know's gasmasks" link to credible results of scientific tests, anything short of that one way or the other is just hearsay.

i would imagine this would be realy impractical, as the penis would take longer to reach the mouth, going in and out, it would not be contstantly inside the wearer's mouth, thus leading to frequent accidental teeth scrapage.

that's what ring gags are for

so anyone interested in doing some digging with me about solid reports of asbestos in various masks? i started poking around and it seems every account is copied from wikipedia. which has an unsourced lab report and this
http://www.cwunea.org/article.php?articleid=1233
for sources. that report seems like its wrong as it's directly at odds with the other reports that seem less like cribbed pr releases.

Not him, but I seriously encourage you to ask a handful of people if they know who any of those people are. Not only am I pretty damn sure that most people will only recognize Mattis, I guarantee you there will be no consensus that he's a morally upstanding hero.

Not sure about US but here in Bongland the First World War fucked our entire national mentality. It's hard to be gun-ho when entire villages virtually lose their entire male populations. The whole reason we put off an invasion of France in WW2 was because we were terrified that it might devolve into attritional warfare like last time, so instead we used our Navy and Air Force in Europe and fought a peripheral war in Africa and the colonies.

>Does anyone have any statistics on this?
Yeah, operators switch to mk 262, the rest of the military is adopting M855A1 in preparation for fighting Russians.
>Is the x39 better in every concievable way?
Worse actually. Beyond nearly useless beyond 400m, while mk262 has been found by the army to have "acceptable" legality out to 700m.

How do I ID filters?
Ages ago I bought what I think is an old British gas mask which came with a filter, and young dumb me put it on and fucked around with it for ages. Later on I read that the filter might have asbestos, called the shop, and the fucking guy had no idea.

If I recall correctly, the one marking I remember was "84", and the mask was I believe a MK II Light Anti-gas Respirator. Which means it was 60mm.

How can I find out if I've got asbestosis now?

1: Cool your titties, the asbestos scare with gas masks should just be considered a meme at this point.
2: The LAGR's were used into the 60's, so it's possible the filter did have asbestos, but unless the filter was damaged severely, it's unlikely any if not a miniscule, microscopic amount reached your lungs.
