I'm thinking of adding a shotgun to my arsenal.

I've never personally owned a shotgun before but I feel like I should. At first I was hyped up by the Shockwave, but then got to thinking how much more cool (and useful) a side by side would be. Anyone have any experience with these?

I'm not sure whether to go internal or external hammer, and I'd like to keep the barrel length on the shorter end so HD wouldn't be out of the question. Thoughts?

Double barrels are fun, have an akkar SBS and its really fun to shoot. Not perfect but good to fuck around with. I wouldn't really use a double barrel for home defense, a lot of better options if you live in the states.

It wouldn't be my first choice, but having options is always good.

If you're thinking home defense, you should watch this series of videos, starting here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ipA86ri5C8

TL;DW, get an 870, preferably an older wingmaster or police model - if you get an express you will have to do a few modifications to it to make it perform reliably, at which point you are spending more for a gun with a poorer finish and more headache.

So, with your used (pre 2007 is ideal) 870, you'll want to get the barrel and length of pull as short as possible. I put an 18.5" barrel on mine as well as a +2 magazine extension so they sit flush with one another. It's the shortest you can get without NFA. (you can go shorter by half an inch, but I want there to be no question should a fed bust out the tape measure).

Put a glowing front bead and a flashlight on it, then spend the rest of your dollhairs on buckshot and range time.

Here's what mine looks like (but not actually mine)

wtf is a bsa? And i live with my self by shooting a cheap double barrel lol.
>>
>>34207109
Pump is going to be a much better value for your money op. Either an old 870 or any vintage 500.

You could also go the single barrel route if you just want something to play with.

Sxs and o/u are fairly big money guns with a specific purpose and that ain't home defense.
>>
>>34207329
This is good advice.
>>
Not op but who here owns a Remington Model 11 or a Savage 720? I'm thinking of getting a poor mans A5 and wanted some opinions. Basically gonna use it for pheasant hunting and recreational skeet shooting/general fuckery. Trying to find one cheap, condition isn't all that important to me as long as it functions.
>>
>>34207109
What do you plan on using your shotgun for OP? The main reason I rarely use my shotguns is that all I can do with them is dispose of the rare rabbit or shoot skeet.
>>
Are there any coach guns that have a shell ejector (not extractor) like in single barrel guns, you know the kind that tosses the spent shell out with force?
>>
Hey /k/, Im also new to shotguns, just got a Remington 870. I also bought rifled slugs, and someone told me I shouldnt shoot them through a smooth bore barrel. I tried googling it but everyone seems to have a different answer. Should I use a type of choke on it? It came with two, one that says IMP CYL and another that says Full Steel Or Lead.

All I want to do is shoot slugs and shitboy target shot without having to change things in the field. Please help?

Anyone know of anywhere the HSGI V1 shot cards are still in stock? I don't like the full nylon and elastic shell saddles, I prefer the hard ones, but I like the ability to detach it.
>>
>>34208181
>>34208181
you want the tightest choke for slugs. That way the slug compresses as it goes though which gives you more acceleration
>>
>>34207329
Really the only ones having QC issues are their Express line of 870s. AFAIK, Wingmasters and Police models haven't been affected.
>>
>>34207109
Nothing wrong with a double barrel shotgun. Here's the thing though, stock fit matters more on shotguns than on rifles (no optics unless you're doing a specialty shotty instead of a jack of all trades gun). So handle a bunch of them. Shoot a bunch if you can. Chances are you'll find one that "fits" significantly better than others. It will feel right.

That's the one you should get. Doesn't matter if it's single, double, pump, or auto. Fit is king.
>>
>>34207109
If you ever get a double-barrel for trap or skeet, get an O/U type.
>>
>>34208757
From what I understand, even the wingmaster was impacted by poor QC following the Freedom Group buyout of Remington. The Police line is made on a different line, so it is still fine. I have heard that quality is going back up slowly - I guess that's what happens when you buy a company in the midst of a major economic recession.

Anecdotally, I did go to a Dicks and racked the slide on an 870 Express Tactical and if felt like shit compared to my 1978 Wingmaster. It felt and sounded like an airsoft gun. Maybe that's because it wasn't broken in, but still

Seraphim armoury is supposed to be releasing a line of shotguns, one of which is a coach. But they have been delayed in manufacturing, they were supposed to be available early this year

If QC would improve I would buy an Express.

I know senpai, I'm keeping an eye on the company and looking to order asap. They offer a discount to certain people (firefighters/medics/army/police/etc) which I apply for, but so far it's only their 1911s. I'm hoping they give the same deal for shotfuns as well, if so I'll probs try to snag the little pistol too for keks

Talking out of my ass here but I think it did for the 200th.
I got one that came with the lifetime warranty and it works like a charm. No semblance of issues whatsoever.

Most coach guns these days are made for cowboy action shooting. Just picked up a Stoeger coach gun for $350 out the door. If you polish up the chambers, you can eject them with gravity.

It's a nice buy, right barrel is improved cylinder while left is modified choke. So slugs are A-OK in the right, tighter pattern on the left. Two triggers to choose between, and a 3" chamber for larger loads.

8/10 would recommend.

Depending on your budget, shotguns tend to be some of the user and wallet friendliest options you can have in a firearm.

Even Sub $200 can net you a solid workhorse shotgun from a reputable manufacturer and have quite an aftermarket to boot.
Different loads are widely available at local bigbox stores and other online dealers. For a Side by Side, I'd look for a BSA or hell, even a Stoger as they can be had for around $400 - $600 for a good quality shotgun. If you want the two barrels and aim it more for Skeet and hunting, Over Unders like the Stoger Condor or the Mossberg Maverick O/U can be had for around the same prices ($400-$600) for New In Box.
Pumps, you have a great variety in terms of cost. Usually the debate falls between a Mossberg 500 and a Remington 870, with the higher ends of the 500 leaning towards the M590(A1) or the Police Tactical 870. Affordable clones of these designs can be had and I actually liked my 870 clone (Interstate Arms Hawk M192) that I bought for $140 after shipping and FFL fees.

All depending on what you're looking for.

Oh and as a final important note: If you're looking to buy an automatic shotgun, make sure you use hotter loads. The cheap Federal Target loads that you find for $20 for a box of 100 won't cycle most actions, so you'll need to get a bit more powerful ammunition. The cheap $10 for 20 00 Suprema Buck worked fine, so just keep that in mind for any autoloading shotgun ideas.

Hope my long as fuck post helped.

OP here, mostly as a range toy. It's not something I'm going to beat up on or demand supreme performance from.

And thanks for the tips everyone.
