It was a continuation of the first gulf war. UN Resolution 1441: Iraq is found in material breach of all 27 requirements for Saddam Husseing to remain in power. Both chemical and nuclear WMDs are on one line.

Saddam had kicked out the weapons inspectors in 1998. Without the inspectors there was no chain of custody and this was compounded by Saddam intentionally spreading rumors that he had WMDs. These rumors were an essential deterrent to keeping his neighbors in fear of him, but eventually backfired when he had to convince the US that he got rid of them.

The No Fly zone. After hostilities ended, Saddam requested the use of his helicopters to supposedly deliver aid. He delivered bullets to quell the uprising of the kurds and the shiites. The UN instituted the no-fly zone to keep him from massacring (more) of his civilans. Saddam fired on US aircraft patrolling this zone 88 times, not including our allies. He also put the AA systems on top of hospitals and schools to use them as human shields.

Then there was the Oil for Food program run by Kofi Annan's son. Corrupt UN officials were taking kickbacks and giving Saddam liquid assets which he then used to keep himself in power and fund his armies... rather than give food to his people. This undermined peaceful sanctions and solutions. When peaceful solutions are sabotaged, war is the result.

Iraq acceded, US accused them of stalling. UN weapons inspector said that Iraq's previous reports were false, inaccurate or contradictory and the multiple caches of undocumented chemical WMDs found for years afterwards bears out the truth. Iraq was in breach, no worming your way out of it.

The US and its allies had tried to get the UN to agree on a resolution leading to war, but France, China and Russia were promising to veto any direct authorization of force.

1441 had to omit that in order to get its unanimous vote, but 1441 also stipulated that this was the last chance. No further opportunities were to be given.

France and others were still threatening to veto an authorization of force after Blix reported Iraq was non-compliant... Not too surprising then why the US and its allies had to do it themselves. You'd sooner get the UN to declare Israel the #1 violator of human rights.

So yeah, the UN is pure bullshit for not upholding the previous resolutions before 1441 and blocking military action against a country that is bribing UN officials to undermine peaceful sanctions.

If you actually read about Chris Kyle, you'd learn that he was a braggart, a liar and little more than a jingoistic crusader with chip on his shoulder. One cannot claim that Kyle is a hero without admitting to the idea that life, especially human life, is cheap.
