part of that is how the game generates weapons.

first the game randomly determines the manufacturer. this limits what type it can drop (no Jakobs smg, for example).

then it determines what type of gun.

then it slaps together pieces willy-nilly from random. So why not have that 4x scope, that stock, this magazine over here, and that bayonet from that pile? who cares that its a shotgun, it has a 4x scope and revolving action and no stock.

thats how virtually everything gets made.

after finishing borderlands and all the extra dlc stuff I jumped straight into borderlands 2 and couldn't tell what the crap is going on... They took the cell shading a little too far and the guns are infuriating horrible...

Originally in the planning/concept phase, before this art, the magazine was supposed to fly off the front when you did a kinda whipping motion with the gun (they weren't bullpup) and it would detonate with the remaining ammo. Think like a square chunky pistol where the magazine was flush with the handguard and barrel. Anyway, they were like "Let's make them like bic lighters where you just throw em away when you're done." and apparently someone didn't sit in on the planning phase or it was too hard to do and only caught the last half of the idea.
