Does the US still use napalm?
>>

>>
>>34205454
Not napalm I don't think, but still uses a different type of incendiary bomb now.
>>
>>34205454
No, because it doesn't work all that well. Incendigel has specific uses like killing troops without destroying vital structures (for example if they hold a bridgehead and you want the bridge). If we fought in jungle it would be useful. The last run of nape canisters was used in the invasion of Iraq on one or two missions.

Fun fact: The only place you'll see napalm canisters on US aircraft is when they are modified with nose and tail fairings (aluminum cones) and a side door to be used as "travel pods". The door will fit mobags and golf clubs. There isn't much room in fighters for luggage so travel pods are used for TDYs. Most travel pods are a lot older than the aircraft carrying them. I pulled the last virgin napalm canisters my base had out of storage in the 1990s to be modded.

Thread with different pods from different countries. 906th FG pod with open door was originally a napalm canister:

Afghanistan: IS has not been able to strengthen their presence. Taliban seems to get just bolder and bolder. Some of the recent attacks have been downright clever. The more questionable events are on the Paki-Afgh border; not big events but Paki is losing face and seem unable to deal with it.

Iraq: IS is shitting all over Baghdad with bombs and attacks. They may have lost the war in the field but clearly where there's sunni, there is going to be IS for a long time ahead.

I looked it up myself to get a general idea. Government forces in Afghanistan are mostly fighting the taliban. Iraq is where some of ISIS is. They're fighting the government as well. I don't really know who's winning in both countries, but I assume it's a stalemate in Afghanistan and the government is making ground in Iraq.
>>
Just in: Turkey claims it is irresponsbile of Northern-Iraq kurds to have a public vote on the matter of independence.

Judgment of this aside - I can't recall such a vote to have been officially mentioned lately. Has it, or are the Turks just being preemptive?

Hm. It is a bizarre thought, but if the Turks are going to go in big time in Qatar on short notice, won't it reduce their military strength for an incursion into kurdish Iraq?

ISIS in Iraq are not holding anything of value but a few quarters of western Mosul, and they are being punched by the kurds and US on one side while the shia govt forces are pushing from the other. IS can't win anything there any more, they can just hold off the end a bit longer.

Afghanistan is not so much at a stalemate, as waiting. The govt forces don't want to fight for anything but their own lives and families, desertion is massive, and taliban holds the rural parts. What they are waiting for is that the West stops feeding the govt cubic tons of US dollars on a weekly basis, at which point the taliban can just walk in with their rifles slinged on their backs.

ISIS in Iraq are still highly active, Diyala, Jazirah, Janub, Anbar and other provinces. However those attacks are mostly hit and run on checkpoints.

They have already tried. The national council in theory consists of representatives from the various tribes. The problem is that in a nation where your average family has no tv, no newspapers, at best a battery radio, your tribe is literally the world you know. The government provides little if anything in the way of benefits your family gets; the roads, the school and the water wells are all provided by the local community meaning your own tribe. Meanwhile state is known to you primarily by the army and the police, neither of which are reliable for anything but demanding bribes. All of this changes if you have connections high enough in the state to get a no-actual-work-required job, or a steady income from taxes or fees that requires no more than signatures. There is no glue that puts the tribes together.

Does anyone have a link to the ISIS video they released in farsi, where they talk about iran and shit?

Preferably on a non jihadi site
>>
>>34206466
Why don't they just level the Palmyra silos with airstrikes already? I know it's an ideal strategic point to capture, but denying IS that opportunity in the first place should be paramount. If they are left with the wide expanse of the desert around what's left of the silos all IS can do is conduct hit-and-run attacks with far higher risks.
>>
>>34206540
The SAA has the silos, it's the area near it north and east, like a small bulge. It seems to be holding up the assault on Arak, the next objective here. The Ruaf has saturated the area with strikes the last time I was watching it.
>>
>>34206579
I stand corrected then. Still though, I've wonder if the Russians considered saturating the site with bunker busters at this point. If IS have tunnel networks this would be the best time to use it to bury their asses.
>>
>>34206625
No, it's fine. I may lead to the misunderstanding because I always mention the silos without mentioning who holds it because that's where all the fighting is nearby so I shorten it to the silo area.

IS can continue to hold the area with a "base" nearby to resupply them but as to why the Russians can't crack it with their large amount of airstrikes leaves me questioning just how deep and involved is it underground.
>>
>>34206513
where is this video?
>>
>>34206351
I think this might just be propaganda, there is literally nothing out there, no roads or anything, even if they reached the border it wouldn't mean much since there is no real routes into Iraqi controlled territory and the fact theres literally no roads leading back into government controlled land

Really doubt the SAA reached there that fast with no one noticing, especially the US and their troops getting boxed in without a fuss

US Department of Defense has acknowledged that he had no legal grounds to interfere with pro-government forces in Syria to act in certain areas.

"These areas of conflict prevention - this is not an exclusive area. There is no legal basis for us to say: "No one should come here." It is not our mandate ", - quotes RIA Novosti spokesman Jeff Davis Pentagon.

However, he said that the US and its allies have the right to strike at the forces that represent a threat to them. This is what the ministry explain the recent strikes on Syrian military in the area of Al-TANF.

In addition, Davies confirmed that the US is determined such "zone conflict prevention" within a radius of 55 km from the place where they are carrying out operations or allies.

Before the Iraq war, the sunnis were in charge and they were giving the shias shit and the kurds much more shit. Most officials and anyone with any power at all were sunnis, and Saddam put much effort into keeping his sunnis happy. But the sunnis were also the majority people group. The war, and the US, took all the power and money away from the sunnis and gave it to the shias. The kurds managed to be more or less left alone from there, which was great for them. The shias were now in charge despite being only a third of the population, and were not interested in sharing. The old, mostly sunni, army was sent home and some new shia forces were raised with a shitton of US gear.

The sunnis were not happy about this development. IS, which leans in the sunni direction, had very easy pickings in getting sunnis to join up.

I am not going to weep over the butcher saddam. But if the US had brought brains to the table instead of guns, they could have helped build a system which motivated the biggest people group to participate rather than oppose it.

IS would have risen anyway. But it grew this big because the sunni part of the population were ready for someone, anyone, to lead them back into power.
>>
>>34207612

Adding. Some have argued that cruel as Saddam's government was, he kept the religious fanatics in check. One might compare him to Tito in this, theoretically. I disagree. Saddam and his Baath party was hard on shia fanatics, and on Al Qaida although the proof for this is very flimsy, because they were shias and religous fanatics are harder to keep in check since their bonds are undercover. And after all they had not even recovered from the war with shia-controlled Iran. Ironically the Iraq shias and the Iran shias were not in a position to cooperate, what with the US and Iran being on bad terms. Haha. I am of a distinct impression that this has changed.
>>
>>34207612
Was basically putting everyone in the Baath party out of a job the biggest mistake of the occupation of Iraq?
>>
>>34208063

I can't think of a bigger one, really. Nothing was ever more effective at distancing the sunnis from the new leadership. It is tempting to compare this to the aftermath of WW2 when the nazi party was dissolved. The difference was that while the NSDAP was dissolved and the leaders arrested, a great many NSDAP bureaucrats were allowed to continue in their jobs to keep the country going. But in Iraq, they were all kicked out, without new jobs to go to, and were left with nothing but resentment. How competent the new guys were didn't really matter to the US, and they probably had no intentions of favoring the sunnis any more.
>>
>>34207612
>sunnis are the majority
maybe i've just misinterpreted what you're saying but last time i checked shias were the majority people group(65%) and the sunnis were the large minority(35%).
>>
>>34208770

Well, fuck.
Checked with Wikipedia:
"Iraq is a Muslim-majority country; Islam accounts for an estimated 85% of the population, while non-Muslims (mainly Assyrian Christians) account for just 15%.[2] It has a mixed Shia and Sunni population. The CIA Factbook estimate that around 65% of Muslims in Iraq are Shia, and around 35% are Sunni.[2] A 2011 Pew Research Center estimates that 51% of Muslims in Iraq are Shia, 42% are Sunni, while 5% identify themselves as "Just a Muslim".[178]"

There goes my theory out the window. Partially. But I think it's still valid to sat that the sunnis are a pretty big part of country and were removed from power en bloc.

BTW those numbers do not reflect that the kurds are also mostly sunnis and shias.
>>
>>34200068
What is it with these guys and synthol?
>>
>>34208831

Also, that wiki page can't be up to date - I am under the impressions that many of the christians have left the country after the IS stepped on it.
>>
>>34208831
your theory is still correct in the main, just that the sunnis dont want to engage with the process because as long as its along sectarian lines shia parties will always come out on top
>>
>>34207420
>Saddam Hussein is deposed
>Sunnis lose their power based after a rushed as fucked de-Ba'athification process by Bremer's transitional government
>Sunnis get pissed. Many turned to insurgency.
>Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's Organization of Monotheism and Jihad is energized by the Sunni insurgency. Moves to Iraq to gather recruits
>Gains power and stirs shit in Iraq
>Zarqawi's organization joins Al-Qaeda. Becomes Al-Qaeda of Iraq.
>Gains more power and stirs more shit in Iraq
>Rules over swatches of Iraq with an iron fist not unlike the current Islamic State
>Loves to behead people on the internet
>Zarqawi is killed
>AQOI becomes the Islamic State of Iraq
>Gains even more power and stirs even more shit in Iraq
>Gets their ass kicked out of urban strongholds by the US during the late-2000s surges
>Goes into hiding and resorts exclusively to brutal guerrilla fighting and carbombing
>Arab Spring happens
>Neighboring Syria goes to shit
>ISI has a field day
>Joins fight against the SAA in Syria
>Offers alliance with the Nusra Front, only to break up with them after ISI falls out with Al-Qaeda
>ISI becomes the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
>Proceeds to sweep across Syria and a weaken US-less Iraq

tl;dr As soon as the Sunnis were disenfranchised post-2003 Iraq War and as soon as Zarkawi capitalized on Sunni discontent, it was difficult to put a lid on these particular jihadis.

Hm. ISIS claimed to have killed two US SF soldiers and wounded a third, in the ar-Raqqah province. I don't question the claim but I am puzzled that they have not taken pics and published them. Source is SITE. Anyone else hear of this?
>>
>>34209860
who knows ,ISIS is not 100% realiable when it comes to enemy losses
>>
>>34209860
SITE tends to trawls for claims coming out of jihadi groups but not verify if their claims are accurate.

IS can be accurate when they can produce evidence, but they have a tendency to bend information in their favor. But to be fair, this is Raqqa, a city full thousands of hiding spots. It wouldn't be surprising if SF soldiers are killed.
