hey /k/ how do i get a stock to look like this? Is it just the wood that looks that good, or is the finish really that nice looking? I'm planning on refinishing a RC that currently has a really bad looking stock.

I imagine burl wood would make impressive stocks

It is 90% the wood and 10% the work that went into finishing it.
Highly figured woods like walnut and mapple look great, but, are weeker. All the figure, is weakness.
Very high quality wood that has been prepared correctly + repeated applications of linseed/tung oil. You cannot make a rack grade or mass produced stock look like that no matter how much effort you put in, although you can definitely give it a better finish than something like shellac.

What this guy said
Well the wood doesnt look terrible, but considering the replies, I'm not very hopeful. Pic related.

That's never going to have the same definition. The wood is too dark. But it will look nice with a good light stain and poly.

Bolivian walnut or regular walnut? There is a difference.

just find a new/better one and stash the old one
that one's toast

Use shitty wood.

Looks like walnut crotch.

Youre not gonna get a finish like whats in the OP with that stock. The pic you posted is figured wood, which is essentially wood with a peculiar non-standard grain (I.e. burled, flamed, birdseye, etc etc) that tends to be used on more premium or high dollar projects.
That stock has a nice grain though, and with some solid effort (and maybe some staining even) it could look pretty damn good. I'm assuming you're fairly new to finishing wood though?
Having a good finish on your gun is a must.

>how do i get a stock to look like this?
Blast it with piss
Not to hijack the thread, but my suomi came with some pretty beat up wood. I would like to refinish it, but I want to give it something just like what it originally would have had. Should I just stripped the old shellac off and reapply? Clear or amber?

Yes and clear. Thats just my opinion though.

OP that stock is literally plywood. It's a laminated K98 stock.
Clean it up with a chemical stripper and a good soak in mineral spirits, give it a once-over with 300 grit sandpaper (on a backing of some kind), and rub a thin coat of BLO into once every two days until you like the look. That's as good as it will ever be.
Here's mine. See how even the lines on the back are? Fucking plywood homie.
