The most important part of my setup is the trap.
As far as firearms go, I just use whatever seems most fun at the time. I've used anything from pellet guns to full size semi auto rifles.

It was a pet. I just throw anything dead in the silo so the dog can't drag them into the yard again and no smell seems to escape it.

I've got moles in my yard. What's the best way to remove pest?

I have a couple traps out in the woods. Then I move them around a bit for best results after I've caught something. Dog food is my usual bait, just trickle some in around the pressure plate.
You roll the trap over and the door just falls open and they're easy pickings on the way out.

I catch moles. Basically unregulated and a piece of piss if (and that's a big if) you now what you are doing, as moles aren't on the legislation that requires you to check traps every 24hrs. Just finishing a job on my uncles farm, got 92 fuckers so far out of 66 acres using Duffus traps which has made me a nice supplementary income.

As for doing it for a living, pest control either self employed or working for a company would probably require you hold a relevant certificate. "pest2 can mean anything from foxes to wood boring beetles, so its a wide rnage of different skills. Any muppet can ponce around with an airgun blasting pigeons, but the powers that be as well as professionals would probably take a dim view, and you're well up shit creek if you fuck up, hurt someone or waste or disturb a protected species. Education, certification and industry experience are your friends.

Not to say you can't do stuff like crop protection, lamping, deer control, pigeon decoying and rat blatting as a side job as many do, but experience, relevant training and certification are the way to go. There's also the cost of getting the tools and certs you need to do those things (shotgat/firearms license, DSC1 or 2 etc). And then to piss on your last fireworks, doing it for fun and doing it for a living are very different things: I like catching moles, and shooting pigeons and stalking deer, but doing all those things in the pissing rain in January is wank, no matter how you cut it.
