Alright if you have 500 to spend on a knife, might as well get something rare and limited so that you can preserve your value or even increase it. Don't buy a $500 production sebenza. Maybe buy a sprint run of some sort or a limited number.

Buy pic related for 500, sell it for 600+ in a few yrs

I'd probably buy a 6 piece Shun classic set and a separate 7" santoku to go with it.

Shit's getting kinda crazy here, and I'm thinking of buying a knife for protection, but I'm not at all sure what to buy.
I've been given these two as suggestions, but does anyone here have any suggestions for someone who has never owned a knife before?

https://www.amazon.com/Benchmade-Bedlam-Axis-Folding-Knife/dp/B004KQ54FG

https://www.amazon.com/SOG-Elite-Fixed-Blade-E37SN-CP/dp/B001C2LGPI
>>
>>34194357
I like both, but I have to say the Bedlam.

It's a dream knife of mine, simply because of the blade shape.

I bought a Talwar from a pawnshop, and it's basically my quasi-bedlam.

If you can afford it, go for the bedlam.

Get a knife with a matching training drone. Get training.

Fixed is preferable if you can carry it.

So I am not sure this is the right place, but are bayonets better on lighter or heavier guns?

The context is equipping soldiers in a space-station garrison.
>>
>>34196359
define "better"

There is not much purpose to putting bayonets on heavy crew served weapons (unless you're Japanese).

If you're talking about rifles only then it all depends on the reach, balance, weight, and durability of the weapon to determine how well a bayonet would work.
>>
I have a question about knife fighting, Is it better to have a cross guard than to not have one?
>>
>>34197329
Better to have a gun
>>
>>34196359
For use as a bayonet?
Long, sturdy, relatively light full sized rifle would be best for using the bayonet as a melee weapon. Pretty much any bolt action military rifle would be the Apex of bayonet functionality even though that function was outdated.

Anyone like the Military more than the PM2? It's starting to grow on me. I like the big size a lot. It's a mean long wicked edge and the lockup and blade play is way more solid than the PM2.

Biggest gripe is the lack of mounting points for clips. That needs to be updated ASAP

Mainly the inconsistent coloration. It appears that the G10 was cut unlevel. But I really liked the texture from the black scales on my other contego, they're just beat to shit.
>>
>>34211978
Sharpening drew the edge up but I broke the tip prying on a Crosby plate clamp. I kind of shoddily reprofiled tip with my belt grinder.
>>
>>34212050
sent it to benchmade to get a new blade put on. you got another 810 int he mean time while that one gets fixed. lots of people complain about the sharpness of the handle scales, mine is just fine. I love this knife and i find m4 to be easy to sharpen and holds an edge for a long time
>>
>>34211978
Forgot. Love it M4 is great steel. It rusts fast but I constantly cut fiberglass blanketing and I hated carrying around spare razor blades. I can cut wet carpet all day without having to touch it up.

like the design of the while knife. what crazy shit have you done with it? Im a haul truck driver for a coal mine in BC and so far ive put to hard use, but my grip hasnt failed ever either and that fucker is beat to shit but still great and no wiggle int he blade
>>
>>34212132
Definitely, the only knife I've never been able to break. I once dropped it out of an 80' man lift on concrete and it only chipped the handle scale.

>>
>>34213426
In the unlikely event of any future real life combat situation i ever might need a knife in, it really doesn't matter if i'm carrying a lock blade or a balisong. Spent almost a decade with Russian martial arts, and because of that i don't depend on a knife much in a fight so its not too much of a concern. I just like having nice things honestly.

So I got the CRKT M21 a long time ago and I have problems sharpening it and holding an edge. Mostly I use it for opening packages, cutting zip ties or food, so no rocks or something. Also, I had it sharpened by a knifeshop which also sells these and it was sharp, but lost the edge really quickly. And it was never as sharp as my swiss army knife. Am I doing something wrong or expecting too much?

Spyderco Paramilitary 2.

I say this with some authority. Now I had a CRKT M21, or M16/M18/M14 or some derivative back in 2000 when I was 18. It was the coolest knife. Of all the knives I could think of, the PM2 would have been the coolest "next step" back then that would have blown my mind. Why?

>G10 scales are amazing, light and grippy
>S30V is a night and day difference over the crappy CRKT steel, and seems to stay sharp "forever" by comparison
>compression lock is different, but just as fun to play with as a flipper

It may be around $120 starting, but you aren't going to regret it. Find the color, pattern and steel you want and have fun.
>>
what's a folder that's a step up from a spyderco paramilitary 2?
While i like the PM2, S30V does roll and chip a bit easy.

Don't buy the Shuffle; neither the 1st or 2nd gen.

I bought two Shuffle II for a friend and myself and both of them were ridiculously stiff from the factory, horrible fit and finish and somewhat dull.

Also, the bottleopener sucks.
>>
>>34214600
I just ordered it.

What do you recommend instead ? I can still cancel it.
>>
>>34214652

I would cancel it and go for a Spyderco Dragonfly or Ambitious. Both are the same size blade, but much better quality, especially the Dragonfly.
>>
>>34213628
What's your price range?
>>
>>34213861
I'd say Benchmade 810 Contego
CPM-M4 steel is wonderful, and is similar size to pm2
Tips not near as flimsy looking either
>>
>>34213861
That's kind of a hard call unless you get up into the $300+ range, and even up there you may not get a knife that's functionally any better than a PM2.

Since your issue seems to be "toughness," I'd look into a sprint run Spyderco in a more exotic steel, maybe M4 or Maxamet. Something in M390 might work too, though I've heard Spyderco's 390 isn't the toughest.

I'd probably get a traditionally wrapped custom kwaiken from a lesser known maker, then. Epoxy dipped cord wrap with real ray skin, real hamon/temper line. Like a wider more traditional CRKT Obake. Attach comp-tac clips so I can carry it iwb.

>>
>>34195442
And what, exactly, can a $500 knife do that a $100 or less can't? Corrosion resistance, edge retention, ergonomics, come on son, justify your choice. And keep in mind that a $500 blade can fall out of a pocket or get forgotten or confiscated at a checkpoint just as easy as a $80 one, so keep that in mind. And the price difference can buy a good sharpener and a lot of oil too.

I might spend $30 on a knife. I'd use the other $470 to buy a decent meal, a new rod and reel and some ammo.

J.W. Bensinger my man.

I've shilled him a couple of times but I think he's one of the more underrated custom makers out there. I've got two knives from him and I honestly think he could charge more for the quality he puts out.

Here's a tanto he did not too long ago.

Sebenzas aren't worth the money. They're nice for sure, but they're no more reliable or usable than say, a PM2 for half the cost.

Even the PM2 could use a price check.

I really want a nice V42 remake.

CRKT-A.G. Russell Sting 3b
$40
https://agrussell.com/knife/CRKT-A-G-Russell-Sting-3B--CL-2025

Though personally I'd go with the more expensive but much sexier A.G. Russel Sting 3 for $100 (pic related)

Looks neat, might be exactly what I need. Perhaps a little longer than I had hoped since it's a boot knife and all but it looks plenty killy enough.

What does /k/ think about the Ka-Bar TDI series of knives and knives with a similar design? I like the idea behind it but I'm not familiar with the quality of the materials involved or if the design really offers anything over a traditional centered point blade.
