thank god. on of the Battletech books I read had a nicely detailed paragraph describing a pilot boiled to death inside their cockpit when the hull of their Mech was breached while fighting on some methane gas covered planet.

The only objects with a significant presence of methane in their atmospheres are Titan, Uranus, and Neptune.
All real chilly.

Methane also doesn't last long under high heat or radiation. It breaks down.
So even if somehow an event moved a formerly methane rich atmosphered object into a closer orbit, it wouldn't last long as a "methane" atmosphered planet
>>
>>34176598
They're dropped from orbit and generally are expected to operate independently in any situation.

I suppose you could build a tank that had a big arm that let it flip itself upright and help it scale broken terrain, but you do what you want.

It is better that the clans have a somewhat believable, detailed and unique, society rather than the usual sci-fi tropes. Same for IS whose politics are just as colorful as real life.

Think about it for a moment. We have ISIS, Russia taking over Crimea, China militarily expanding onto artificial islands and all the other crazy violent shit going on everywhere else.

Only Japanese make mech simulators, anon.
I can't think of any western simulator games, only arcade shooters like Mechassault or Mechwarrior, maybe Heavy Gear? Did Heavy Gear simulate anything or was that also an arcade game? The first one was based on MW2, but it's not like you couldn't simulate stuff back then.

>It's amazing that Japan of all places has the most faithful adaptation of the book.

If you don't know much about their sci-fi boner, maybe?

Take a look at Gundam. For some it's Space Samurai bullshit.
And then you look at it and find out that:
The mechs are based in Heinlein's description of what the infantry suits looked like and how they worked, just upscaled to bigger proportions. They're even called mobile suits after Heinlein's Mobile Suits.
Likewise, most real robots, Macross included, owe their origins to the people who loved that book.
Then there's other bit of Japanese sci-fi boner and that is Star Wars. These guys love Star Wars to no end, hence the literal light sabers seen in there.

They also have a big thing for Blade Runner and the output of those was also beyond amazing.

Simply put, Japan in the last century was a technological dreamland and these people ate up all great SCI-FI there was because to them it was near and achievable future.
And then the economy collapsed and all went to shit for them.
>>
>>34178653
>The mechs are based in Heinlein's description of what the infantry suits looked like and how they worked, just upscaled to bigger proportions. They're even called mobile suits after Heinlein's Mobile Suits.
Supposedly wasn't Gundam going to have power armor like Starship Troopers instead of the 18m tall mechs?
>>
>>34178707
Yeah, I think Tomino was aiming for that, and that the Mobile Suits were just hastily reskinned designs for a planned ST anime.
>>
>>34178653
>>34178724
It's actually pretty crazy how interconnected the 80's japanese mecha scene was.
If I recall, there were a few people in Studio Nue who worked on the original Gundam.
>>
>>34178375
What sucks about that robot is it shifts its entire weight to balance on one foot in every half-stride. That's fucking stupid, you don't balance on one foot when you walk.

Just make sure the other foot shows up before it keels over.

For one, it was the Americans who held the grudge against Japan for so long. They hated the fuck out of 'Merica, but by the late 70s and 80s? The people making these things were only kids during the war.

Likewise "American style hegemony" when it's basically just another fascist regime. Remember who else had no qualms about forming a fascist empire? They're not Germans to be scared shitless of their past. Fascism is all about excessive effectivness at the cost of personal freedom and that is not exactly that special to Asians.
Heck, the modern South Korea got where it is because it went through a phase of dictatorship and they seem mostly fine with it.

I'll be the firs to admit to not be all that well versed in these things and I was repeating someone else's opinions.
Still, the point about them not really having much of a reason to not like the book stands, I think.

>>34179103
A sinking ship.

Basically MekTek guys (the endless updates and support for MW4) wanted to make their own game as a team.
However, their first attempt was a Battletech game and that got removed when Mechwarrior Online and PGI stepped up.

Now willing to give up, they took the Activision route and settled for Heavy Gear.
Before they could show the game to the public, MWO started its endless milking scheme and there wasn't much left for them, so all efforts to fund the game failed.
Now they're just going off of unmentioned partnerships and really don't seem to have much of a future.

Imo, guys should have dropped MW4 long ago and made their game much sooner like the MWLL people (who already got hired with it by the time MWO could shut them down).
