Seriously Op, he is right >>34176254
Gen 1 isn't even worth the $, doesn't work well with most optics that "work" with NV.
Even gen 3 sort of sucks, it takes away all depth perception, and the battery performance is less than optimal.

>>
>>34178629
If you watch that video you CAN see with the gen 1. Does it suck compared to the gen 2 and 3? Fuck yes. Does it still count as having superpowers if you're up against people with no NODs at all? Yup. If nothing else you could see the IR lasers/illuminators of the elite badasses coming to kill you.
>>
>>34176288
for the price you can't go wrong with the Vega, if you want a cheapish introduction to night vision technology then it's a pretty good choice.

>Whats wrong with getting a cheap gen 1 and just figure out if you like nvgs to begin with 200 bucks isnt bad
nothing, that's actually what I recommend people to do before they drop a ton of cash on a higher-end unit. The NV community can be very elitist, don't take it too seriously.

>buy PVS-14 literally anywhere
They're mostly autogated nowadays and they have great light sensitivity. The PVS-14 may be a little antiquated next to newer more expensive options like the BNVD, PVS-15, PVS-31 and so on, but it's newer than the PVS-7 and with dovetail adapters and mounts it's every bit as good as the newer systems until you start getting into the PVS-15, 18 or 31 that use aviation optics like the AN/AVS-6/9 goggles that are issued to pilots. If you DID have the better part of ten Gs to throw at night vision, you could actually GET AVS-9 or a TNV sentinel, which is an AVS-9 retrofitted into a stronger delrin body.

nvg guy can you help me educate myself on mounts and shit? whats the mount on the helmet called? what about the swingy bit? got any wiki or resource i can pa-ruse?
>>
>>34178954
WILCOX and newer NOROTOS mounts with dovetail interface sockets are LIGHTYEARS ahead of the old PVS-7 bayonet horn type sockets that the original PVS-14 adapters were designed for, with a dovetail adapter, a PVS-14 will be more steady than all the others and bayonet horn has mostly gone out of style when dealing with NVG because of how wobbly they tend to be. Just as well, rhino arms and mounts with force to overcome systems in general have almost entirely been supplanted by locking mounts like the wilcox L4 G-24. Shrouds to clip the mounts into have been designed more toward having wider surface area and multiple fastening points in order to avoid the problems of rhino mounts like rolling and wobbling, and SOME mounts like the wilcox L4 G30 are actually permanent, with the shroud and the mount being a single piece that cannot be readily removed from the helmet without tools. Though... be ready to shell out $450 to $500 for one of these new mounts on the more utilitarian end, and upwards toward $1,000 when you get to more specialized mounts, like those used in conjunction with external powersources or ball detent goggles.

Currently on my way to make a 60 bucks costing 1st gen (+3d printed housing, 5-10 bucks) NVG. Very funky, but it does function. Will have visibility up about 20 meters.

project in pictures: http://imgur.com/a/7yDSx

+: superlight, easily replacable parts
-: kinda weak illuminator currently, and if I want to use a bigger one, I'll have to get some kind of cooling going on

Two things you may want to think of is that screen will be hard to see glued to your face. You may actually want to go for one of the cheap VR goggles, since they have all the head mount straps meant for weight, as well as having lenses for you to actually see it.
>>
>>34181261
Yea, could easily be. I set the offset of the screen to my eyes minimal focus distance, around 80 milllimetres/3,1 inches

this, if you really want to afro engineer your own NVGs you cant just put a screen infront of your face. the vr goggles have special lenses that let your eyes focus on a screen two inches from your face.

or stop trying to be a jew and just buy some. what your making is essentially the 50 buck spy kids toy at walmart

>>34181261
Oh, the other thing was get a cheapie 3D lenses.

I'm reading the Vega comes with a built in IR illuminator and a optional armasight long range ir illuminator can be used to increase viewing range, what's this long range illuminator they are talking about and can it be mounted to the head harness thing the vegas comes with or some other sort of headgear?

While it's a good idea to carry a nice flashlight while operating at night, the idea is to be invisible and not light up like a Christmas tree
