McClellan wasn't bad when he was actually in combat and did a good job of turning the Union Army in to something respectable, he just lacked the will to use his superior numbers.

Now when we're talking about shitty Civil War generals.......

He was a fine supply officer and engineer, leading men, not so much.
>>
>>34170094
McClellan couldn't keep up his Espri Du Corps he basically just bent over to the Confederates. He simply didn't do anything and action is what matters in war if he doesn't engage he doesn't control the tempo of the movements of his army and he wasn't initiated movement that would lead to victory. in boxing terms he was always off balance waiting to get punched.
>>
>>34171526
He still managed to hold out for a while before being over run. It could be seen as a purely defensive move.
>>
>>34171526

>2) Wait for winter

>>
>>34172841
He also knew he was at war. General Short and Admiral Kimmel got removed from command and demoted for their "failures" at Pearl Harbor and being unprepared for a surprise attack, yet MacArthur got off scot-free even though he was alerted to incoming attack and did almost nothing to prepare.
>>
>>34172767
>It is in vain that you think that victory can be achieved by using "people's meat." Victory is achieved through the art of combat. War is waged with skill, not with people's lives.
Order of G. K. Zhukov to I. G. Zakharkin on 7 March 1942
>>34172902
The wehrmacht was so stupid they didn't even know russia has cold winters.
>>
>>34172972
No they didn't plan to fight in Russia during winter because blitzkrieg is about charging fast and not being weighted dow by too much gear. The charges at stalingrad begs to differ and the gulags are an example of the soviets value of human life.
>>
>>34172841
I think I have a pretty good grasp on history but can you expand why this was?
The Russian Japan war showed Japan was no joke, and that was 30 years before, they were trashing China and we knew they were hi tech and useful. Why didn't we see Japan as a serious player?

I disagree with Burnside, he was a fully capable officer.
Unfortunately he found himself in a war fighting against extrordinary officers like Robert E. Lee, and simply couldn't adapt to that level.

He knew it too, as he refused command of the Army of the Potomac on several occasions. At Fredericksburg when he saw the bodies of the dead soldiers on the battlefield, he broke down in tears and announced that he would personally lead the Union Army's rearguard action during the retreat. This was talked down by his subordinates, but Burnside felt a strong guilt over the deaths of so many of his men, and tried to resign his commission later

I honestly just feel bad for the guy...
>>
>>34170094
It's a shame too. He was nicknamed the Next Napolean before the civil war broke out.
Dude ended up constantly paralyzed by what he didn't know. Only ever took good action when he had what he thought was good intel, like at Antietam.
>>
>>34172052
off-topic, but I'm assuming that's a well done edit? or did someone draw a comic of Joshua Graham drowning Caeser
>>
>>34170140
To be fair, he'd been under air attack for 3 days straight. He was pretty fucking out of it from sleep deprivation by the time he bumped into Sprague's force.
>>
>>34169978
Cadorna also had more of his own men executed than any other general in WWI. This included officers whose units "under performed". I'm honestly surprised he wasn't hanged after the war, or at least shot by one of the millions of people that despised him.
>>
>>34172855
Isn't that basically what I wrote. mccellen was a good organizer. He should have been put in charge of the war dept.
But he was a shit field commander. He had little or no imagination or stomach for battle.
>>
>>34173340
what >>34173392 said, but probably also partly because of racism
>>
>>34173340
Some US leaders did. Teddy Roosevelt and Billy Mitchell both saw Japan as a major threat.
But a combination of racism (asians can't fight whites) and a general disinterest in war lead to the US dismissing the Japanese untill it was too late.
>>
>>34172879
In all fairness, none of what happened to the 2nd Pacific Squadron was Rozhestvenski's fault. The entire fuck-up could be squarely pinned on the Tsar and all those who gave the order to send the squadron to Tsushima. He did a remarkable job given the shitty circumstances handed too him.

Pic very much related.

Admittedly though, the Russian navy has a history of being fucking horrible. If anyone has the cap listing how they could only be roaches at navy warfare, that'd be much appreciated.
>>
>>34174050
Some of it could be blamed on him. But the ultimate result at Tsushima would be entirely the same.
He threw some officers under the bus when the British wanted to know who was responsible for attacking the fishing ships, Rozhestvensky pointed the finger at his rivals.
He also purposely tried to evade his reinforcements because they were comprised of older ships.

Rozhestvensky did do his best but he also did some very dickish things.
