The suit would have to be made of relatively thick rubber (think of a military-style drysuit) for it to be able to take abuse in the field. Repairing equipment would also be done with relative speed and ease in the field, where glue and a material patch can be applied too a hole or tear.

I still mostly use pose references and figure bases at my current level of drawing, but i try to alter the shape as much as possible and of course add the character's original features so it's not blatant tracing and I never take credit for the poses. I still gotta get to the point where i can break this habit, though.

Also when I say it's sort of both, I mean that there's a lot of fantasy aspects (being the character is an avatar/legennd of korra oc and the armor is supposed to have been designed well after LoK, using fictional sci-fi artificial rubber , etc), but I also put a decent amount of thought into the mechanics and physics of the design, in other words, I think of how every bit and piece works together.

I've been through around four designs for the character's armor before I finally felt satisfied with this one. If it were up to me, I'd have all the armor be soft, so there'd be less proportional issues when drawn in certain poses, but I gotta follow those request stipulations.

Here's an example of a rough concept sketch for the current design. Things like minor aesthetic changes, dropping the swiveling kukri sheaths in favoor of building them into the power pack, and the helmet's seal changed from a riing to a neck dam have been changed. Ignore the many proportional flaws here as I was only drawing for concept and mechanical principles of the armor's fuction here.
