US Weapons for the SDF. Thought I'd try to dig for some more detail. What I've found so far:

- Pentagon claims to have delivered 'small arms and vehicles' i. " The weapons sent to the SDF's Kurdish Peoples' Protection Units (YPG) include AK-47s and small-calibre machine guns, Rankine-Galloway added."
I got that from http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/05/begins-sending-weapons-kurdish-ypg-syria-170531042959705.html

- The vehicles are armored, and there are also construction machines. I found that in http://edition.cnn.com/2017/05/09/politics/us-arms-kurds-syria-turkey/index.html but that's a month old.

- "NBC earlier this month reported that some of the items headed to SDF Kurds include ammunition, armor, bulldozers, communication gear, engineering equipment and rifles." So, there's radios too. Got that from http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/335661-us-sending-arms-to-syrian-kurds-report

- "On Saturday, a convoy of military supplies, including weapons and equipment for the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), entered the Syrian city of Qamishli. The convoy included mostly logistical equipment such as water tanks, large containers, a Hilux pickup, two Land Cruiser vehicles, as well as a FMTV A1P2 military truck, which is often used by the US-led coalition forces in Syria." Found that in https://southfront.org/us-supplies-weapons-equipment-support-sdf-operations-syria/

- Breitbart, which is of course Trumps little finger, claim that various high tech stuff has been given to the SDF elites. http://www.breitbart.com/national-security/2017/05/09/trump-defies-turkey-approves-heavy-weapons-syrian-kurds/
>>
>>34165387

So, concluding... If this was the Spanish Civil War of 1939, the kurds would be well equipped. For a ground war. There's not one weapon mentioned above that could deal with a group of tanks, nothing to use against planes or choppers, barely anything that can cope even with the armored suicide trucks of the IS or their rocket launchers. I don't even see mention of proper sniper gear.
>>
>>34165394

Fuck, why did I say 1939. It's more like the gear of 1915. Rifles and machineguns and a few cargo trucks. Land Rovers and Hiluxes bwhahaha.
>>
>>34165409

Let's see, what else is missing... RPG's. Hand grenades. Rifle grenades. Small mortars. MANPADS or anything like it. Even some 20mm cannons to counter the ones IS took from the Iraqi Army. Mine detectors, that would be handly considering how the IS loves to spread mines around.... flame throwers for those tunnels. Some meds for the medics, that would be nice.

But hey, as long as there are blankets to rip apart for bandages and gas to make molotov cocktails the SDF won't be empty handed while they wait for Santa Putin. Or Lady Merkel.
>>
>>34165452
Why would they need manpads
>>
>>34165702

Against the IS? Not much point unless they work against drones. But it would be an added incentive to keep Turkish and Syrian planes at a respectful distance. Not that I think there are current plans for either of them to attack the SDF - but there is nothing like a pilot with a hardon and a full missile rack. And right now we have enough warring factions and front as it is.

Hmm, Assad doesn't have that many birds under his control that he can use for airstrikes (flying activity for the last month has him doing 10-30 airstrikes) and the US strike on that Syrian airbase probably destroyed half of all Syrian planes. A loss of a single plane might not look like much but when you only have 20 or so of them left every plane counts.
>>
>>34165972
Nah Russians usually assist in pounding targets so that's not a big loss. Plus Syria have around 30-40 operational Mig-29 which are rare to see, only one footage exist of mig-29's being used.
>>
>>34166002
True, Russia has been doing the majority of airstrikes (usually over a hundred while Syria only does 10-30) but as of late Russia has scaled down their bombing to 5-10 airstrikes a day.

If SyAAf gets destroyed Russia can easily fill the gap but it's not sure if they'd do that since Russia is only committing 1/10 of the airstrikes that they used to.

Qatar is the one who has been the first and foremost supporting the Arab sprig.

They are the main source of televized pro jihad propaganda.

Support ISIS, AQ, MB, Salafists etc

Seems like they are so cancerous that they even fuck up other sunni countries.

>>
>>34167457
>>34167972
I've read Qatar has OK relations to Iran and Saudi-Arabia is therefore hostile towards it.
>>
>>34167972

Probably some Qatar prince has been caught funding IS or something like that, or passing on Saudi intel to them. And since the other monarchies do not want to hang out a fellow princeling lest their citizens start to question the god given royal right to rule, they punch other places.

I feel no qualms for the Quatar royal asses, any more than I do for the others aristos on this planet. But I do wonder if this new political winter season might push the Quatar toward the Iranians' embrace.

FT story claims Qatar paid HTS and a Iraqi Shia militia millions of dollars in a hostage deal with Iran then used the 4 city civilian exchange as cover for the pay out. There are some insane quotes in the story like "they handed out the money in suit cases , imagine that".
>>34166778
The infighting happens everyday. Just the other day Step had a story of two families in Idlib who took up arms on each other including use of heavy weapons like tanks. Imagine arguing with your neighbor and he drives out a T-55 tank so you respond with your own tank. That's life in Idlibistan.

Well, I am fairly certain the Saudis and friends have all been funding various groups of religious fanatic over the last two decades. Especially the Saudis. For Qatar to be singled out now, they must have done something particularly interesting. Which doesn't automatically add up. Al Jazeera, which have been the royalty' voice, have not afaik been the most fanatic media voice in the ME. So someone, high up, must have been doing shit on his own. Big shit.

I thought Kuwait was the main financier of the various Sunni extremists? I wonder what Qatar did to piss off the other Gulf allies so bad.

Kuwait? That doesn't add up, although I have been ill informed before, because if they had been raging pro Sunni I don't see why Saddam attacked them back then. Can't speak for the bankiers of course.

I think Qatar was hoping to do a balancing act between the Saudis and Iran. Helping the Saudis overtly (sending troops and equipment to fight in Yemen) while having good relations with Iran covertly.

The worst thing is that if it catches fire the heat from the burning logs would make the gears in the tank tracks to buckle and deform under the weight of the tank causing a mobility kill.

Not only that but if it's densely enough packed as those bundles look like they probably are it could also work as spaced armor and fuck with the warheads standoff distance. Total standoff distance looks a bit less than a proper cage would give, but reducing potential penetration by any amount before your armor has to be a good thing.

idk if anybody is keeping track but there wouldnt be anything official anyway. It would all be anecdotal from videos and such. That said Iran was pretty gung-ho about child soldiers in the iran iraq war and IS like to show off how involved the youth are in the movement so . . . some child soldiers but not many? I would think none in the offical iraqi military, perhaps some younger teens in the shia militias, kurds could be the same though im sure its frowned upon for PR reasons and IS is anybodys guess they arm chickens, midgets, donkeys, turkmen, they have no shame

In a few days will also be the anniversary of the occupation of the Golan, territory with which Israel provides succor to rebels fighting the Syrian government. In some sense, the 6-Day War continues its legacy today.
There is some irony in that Israel's adversaries of the time which sought to dismantle it have all since undergone civil wars, collapses of government, or have become failed states.

>>

Jordan have done well and been lucky, in some ways. They were one of the more successful British protectorates and when they gained independence their army was of a fairly good, British-trained standards. Their leadership and royalty have been keener listeners than the others in the ME. About the worst I can for them is that they have had a massive influx of refugees and even with the international support in running the camps, the impact on their nation is very heavy. This is all from memory though; a quick bit of googling could change the pic.

>>34178158
Step just picked up the story and says many pro SAA forces in the convey were wounded or killed but it's unclear what the total damage is by US airstrikes. Yea, this is clearly the biggest military news today.

The good news for the SAA is IS been quiet in Deir Ezzor since being beaten back last night in their assault on brigade 137th. I doubt they will try the same tonight or if they do it will be shelling as usual.

Some heavy airstrikes in Daraa plus a TFSA raid on the YPG on the Afrin side. Lastly NSA attacked SAA forces near Zaza checkpoint earlier today.

They are fighting ISIS and controlling that border crossing

Syria lost complete control of its borders and the majority of its territory, it isn't going to be respected by other nations because of this

Its unrealistic to assume the US would ditch its entrenched base its been operating out of just because some sandal wearing Afghani militia men stumble into their kill zone
>>
>>34179037
What does that matter?
>Why are they bombing anyone who comes too close? They're not even supposed to be there!

So national borders are just some made up concept that US army can afford just not adhere to it? If that's so, Syrian army has full right to "retake " that territory from the US. Guess who's going to be whining when US soldiers in Syria start to die.
>>
>>34179009
Their point is the minor one that the US is in a foreign country uninvited, and whilst their help with IS is appreciated, in some hypothetical world where the US gave a fuck about laws and/or manners they would immedaitely gtfo the moment any government-allied forces moved in to retake an area temporarily held by the US.

But it's pretty irrelevant because what's actually happening is nothing new in the slightest and everyone knows the US is there to cockblock Assad as hard as they can in the hope that something will happen to topple him, at least as much as they're there to fight IS. They're in the wrong entirely but don't give a fuck because Russia has no interest starting WW3 calling them out over it, and nobody else can even consider doing so.
>>
>>34179087
>So national borders are just some made up concept that US army can afford just not adhere to it?

Uh, yeah, sovereignty is a meme and is regularly violated by the US, how new are you to international relations?

>Syrian army has full right to "retake " that territory from the US

Good thing the SAA isn't capable of doing so nor are they willing seeing as its only pro-gov't militias backed by Iranian leading the charges so far towards the border for very obvious reasons

>Guess who's going to be whining when US soldiers in Syria start to die.

Good luck with that, I'm sure a few dozen more Afghani retards in flip flops will get drone'd before then trying to advance towards the base for the third time

Considering Iran was willing to fund Hamas after the Saudis backed out of financing them in 2006 following Hamas' electoral victory and EU pressure in response, it's hardly surprising at this point.

At this rate the Saudis don't seem to show any geopolitical pragmatism and is just doing anything to fuck with the Iranians, stability be damned.
>>
>>34180866

2006 is ten years ago. I am no fan of Hamas but I was of the impression that they had a lot of backing among the arab populations. Especially since the Hamas have been challenged by IS in some of the huge refugee camps.
>>
>>34180959
Oh right, there were more ups and down in Iranian funding as well. If that's the case, what else could Hamas have done to antagonize the Saudis?

>>34181049

The only thing I can think of is that the Saudis want to put a big grin on Netanyahu. Which would be a first, but after the Trump visit, who can tell? It might all be wind and smoke while they make sure to fund Hamas through some third and fourth party. But can the Saudis risk showing too much fondness for the Israelis? These are not good times to really piss off the average arab semi-fundamentalistic man in the street.

What I am curious about, is how this 'border control' is paid for. The US must be burning off a million dollars every hour to keep it running. What budgets is this fun money diverted from?

US sources claim that Al-Zukf base was established for two purposes: one is to block the path of the Syrian army - armored column "Hezbollah", which progressed during the last two weeks of the Al-Suwaidi in the south-east Syria's transition towards Al-TANF.

Another US goal is to capture the key town of Abu Kamal, a distance of 200 km north-west of Al-TANF.

However, the main purpose of the American avant-garde base is the problem to prevent the Syrian government forces and their allies, "Hezbollah" and other pro-Iranian forces to take control of the 300-kilometer stretch of the Syrian-Iraqi border.

US forces are not alone in its bid for control of this strategic area. There becomes very crowded.

4th Panzer Division of the Syrian army unfolded this week in the southern Syrian city of Daraa near the Jordanian border and about 330 km to the west of the new base Al-Zukf. The division is equipped with new tanks T-90 Russian-made and it is headed by the younger brother of Bashar al-Assad, General Maher Asad. General and staff officers began to inspect Daraa countryside on the eve of the outbreak of hostilities.

Part of the future battlefield are no more than 1,000 meters from the border with Jordan.

Our sources of intelligence also reported that this week, further north, the commander of a special unit of the Iranian "Al-Quds", Major General Qasem Soleimani, crossed Syria from Iraq along with his operational headquarters. They joined the command of the Syrian army in Palmyra, which extends from the two columns in the direction of two cities: Deir ez-Zor, which is surrounded by an "Islamic state" forces, and Abu Kamal, which is under the control of ISIS. > Lavrov: Deconfliction zones in Syria announced without Damascus’ consent illegitimate

Russia considers the US-led coalition airstrike against pro-Damascus fighters in Syria an act of aggression and rejects the justification for the attack issued by the Pentagon, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

The Tuesday airstrike near the town of At Tanf in eastern Syria “was an aggressive act, that violated the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and – deliberately or not – targeted the forces which are most effective in fighting terrorists on the ground,” the minister said on Wednesday.

The Pentagon justified the attack by saying that the pro-government forces “advanced inside the well-established deconfliction [sic] zone in southern Syria.”
The US claimed that it attacked the pro-Damascus convoy because it posed threat to “partner forces” based in At Tanf. The Pentagon stated that an area within 55km from the town was a designated “deconfliction zone,” where forces not allied with the US are apparently not allowed to enter.

Lavrov rejected that reasoning, saying that he is not familiar with the term.

“I don’t know anything about such zones. This must be some territory, which the coalition unilaterally declared [deconfliction zones] and where it probably believes to have a sole right to take action. We cannot recognize such zones,” he said.

>Syrian Army's Allies Threaten US With Retaliatory Strike After Tuesday Attack

An operational headquarters of the allied forces of the Syrian government army, which includes the forces of Lebanon's Hezbollah as well as Iran, has threatened the US-led coalition with a retaliatory strike following the latest coalition attack on Damascus positions.

DAMASCUS (Sputnik) — The US-led international coalition fighting Daesh terrorists in Syria announced on Tuesday that it had launched a strike on the Syrian pro-government forces as they had entered an established US-Russian de-confliction zone near the town of al-Tanf. A well-informed source told Sputnik on Tuesday that at least two Syrian army servicemen were killed and more than 15 were injured as a result of the attack.

"The blood of the sons of Syria, the Syrian Arab army and its allies is not cheap, and we have capabilities to attack their [US] positions in Syria and surroundings if it is necessary, taking into account the availability of rocket and different military launchers," the headquarters said in a statement.

The Syrian allies called the US actions "a coward aggression" and accused Washington of "hypocrisy" in its fight against terrorism.

That's part of the reason, but a very minor one.
For example Oman has even better relations with Iran but was never singled out for it.

Nope, it's mainly KSA and Qatar. With Qatar usually supporting the more extremists among extremists.

>>34168289
It easily adds up when you consider that Qatar was financing and supporting the MB in Egypt.
Same goes with for the civil war in Libya, where most of the Arab world and Qatar support different factions.
>>34169293
Their relations with Iran were never really strong, just not as hostile and KSA.
They are the main supporter of the MB, which tends to have historically ok-good relations with post revolution Iran, so not a surprise.

>>34190431
Would be very weird if the Qataris accept Iranian forces on their soil, very doubtful this would happen. It comes with a huge price and would most likely lead to them losing control of their country for the Iranians.
It's also weird b/c of the US large base there.

Turkish soldiers is a completely different matter. Those can be used as a political deterrent as well, with KSA not wanting to kill Turkish troops.

Hamas is a branch of the MB, who has been in conflict with Egypt's gov, in conflict with gulf/Egypt supported faction in Libya and in political conflict with Saudi preachers as well.

Hamas has been supporting those MB branches actively. Post is already too long, but I can go into detail if anyone is interested.

They are denouncing Hamas for their own reasons, just like Iran denounced Hamas back in the early days of the Syrian civil war, because Hamas supported the rebellion, not because of love for Israel.

Ah. Now this makes sense. I knew Hamas had friends in Egypt, they have all those smuggling routes for a reason, but I was not aware that the friends were the Muslim Brotherhood. Arab Spring and so on - no wonder the Saudis are unhappy. But this link is not a recent development if I understand you correctly. Well, there's one confirm. Turkey has decided it is going to send troops to Qatar. >>

>>
>>34198617

Meh. In theory it would be a zerg rush. The armies are something like 30 to 1. That they both have fairly modern equipment should not make a difference. But neither army has shown any particular fighting spirit. It's easy to be in a tank when the USAF is hovering over you taking out ever target in the vicinity. More than half the Quatar army are foreigners, while half the Saudi armi might only be there on the paper. If anything, I suspect the Qatars could get beefed up by foreign volunteers eager for a chance to bloody the US lackeys' noses yet again, which could draw things out for a long time. And I doubt this would be a popular war for long home in Saudi lands. Especially once casualties start mounting and the terror at home part really gets rolling.

The US can just say that they don't want to be involved and stay on the bases. The funny part is that they are sharing those bases with the local armed forces. Worst case scenario for the US would be that they might lose one of the bases because of having to vacate it so the Saudis could eradicate the Q's.

Like most wars, it would be a conflict where the real issues were political. Qatar have tried to place themselves in an advantageous position, using diplomacy on one hand and trickery on the other, buying friends here and backstabbing the competition there. Same as most other big countries on the planet. Trouble is, Qatar is tiny and might not get away with it this time. Not without some kind of losses. If this actually does end in war, it is for political reasons. Not for religious. That war would be brief, but the occupation would be hell and rebellion guaranteed because of all the third parties wanting a slice of the plunder.
