is there a big difference in performance between a 1000ish$ and a 2000ish$ dollar AR? Am I better off cheaping out and spending the difference on ammo?

I've had both. T2 is without a doubt the better red dot overall, but MRO is damn good. MRO has a dot quality on par with T2 imo in terms of crispness. I have slight astigmatism and am pretty sensitive to such things

There isn't a yes or no answer to this. Everyone's eyes are different and your sensitivity to the dot is not the same as mine. I would say this, don't buy a red dot without looking through it in person first, preferably in different lighting conditions where you can dim it and crank it all the way up.
