>China's new submarine engine is poised to revolutionize underwater warfare
>It looks a lot like 'Red October' in real life.
>This month, Chinese state TV channel CCTV 13 broadcast an interview with a top Chinese naval engineer, Rear Admiral Ma Weiming. The admiral is notably responsible for the development of multiple Chinese naval electromagnetic programs, including the electromagnetic catapult and railguns. In the interview, he stated that the PLAN is fitting its newest nuclear attack submarines with a "shaftless" rim-driven pumpjet, a revolutionary and silent propulsion system.

Pumpjets have been in service for literal decades.

Fuck off, Dave. Nobody wants to read your blog.
>>34156158
SUre but not this type of engine. You didn't understand the significance.
>>34156126
China doesn't have the metallurgy to pull this off.
>>34156262
Yes, literally a pumpjet propulsion system in a sub. In service with multiple designs for over 30 years.
If you're talking about specifics, nobody knows because any country worth talking about doesn't actually talk about their sub propulsion systems.

lol "Made in China" and will break in the first 50 days. All just propaganda if it's even true my brother.

Sure thing Jose!

For what reason do you China shills come and shit up the board?
>>34156126
> Implying the didn't steal the plans
Chinks haven't invented anything since gunpowder
>>34156523
Glad you agree, sir. Now back to the rice fields with you.
>>34157053
hahha... ever looked at American schoolchildren math and science scores? They're dead last among OECD.
America just imports smart people from Europe. Buyt even that will end because no one will want to live in Mexico.
>>34156288
a pump jet is an exterior design.
This is a reference to the internal method of turning the propeller, rather than having a steam-driven shaft, it will use essentially use IEP to turn the propeller using electricity generated by the reactor rather than steam pressure.

Their website begs to differ. Also, Taiwan and Hong Kong seem to be doing well, surely not due to any foreign influence.
>>34157073
We're up to our eyeballs in niggers spics and poor white trash. Remove the nigger portion of any of our national stats and they shoot right up to Europe/Asia. Fortunately, our smart people are insanely smart.
>>34157441
Like most americans, you're illiterate. I'm sure you can find red boxes on this chart.
US is a conquered nations. Minorities are already a majority in US schools. In 10 years, they'll be a majority. It's all over.
>>34156282
they hack all the American steel companies and steal their proprietary knowledge/designs
there is a chance their steel will be as good as American in 20 years.
>>34157530
n-no child left b-behind, right guys?

So MAD sensors will light up for miles and miles. Even degaussing your hull won't help
>>34158010
Holy shit you're out of your depth in this conversation.
>>34158020
no he isn't
>>34158032
yes you are.
If you think MAD detectors detect anything that uses magnets.
MAD detectors look for large lumps of ferromagnetics.
If they could detect magnets in use then they would find every nuclear submarine "for miles and miles".
Come back when you've done your homework https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauli_exclusion_principle#Atoms_and_the_Pauli_principle
>>34158079
Different anon. Do we not use the MAD-XR to detect ignition coils under jungle foliage or thick brush? I'm not saying it means a slam dunk on an IEP sub, but it appears that it's not just ferromagnetic detection at that point.

This shit isnt even the problem
Asia has been fucking with their test scores for years, and a passing grade in most of europe is a fucking 50, where as passing in the US is a 70.
>>34158443
>a passing grade in most of europe is a fucking 50, where as passing in the US is a 70.
This is completely and utterly meaningless. The tests aren't the same.
>>34158443
> Passing grade is a 70
Not really. The admins will just fudge the scores or provide alternative classes to get the failures out so that a bunch of fuck ups don't also ruin class for next years kids.
>MAD
It's still used by some because if you have it, why not; but better sonobuoys have made it obsolete for ASW.
The real secret sauce is blue-green lidar.
>>34157094
>use IEP to turn the propeller using electricity
So they're just getting around to that? The US declassified IEP in the 50s. It's what tugboats use nowadays.
Based off what I recall from my own IEP experiences, Chinese subs are going to be noisy and slow. They're probably also going to have overheating problems unless they make them fuckhuge. Or they could kludge together some kind of liquid cooling system.
Liquid cooled electric motors- why does that sound so ominous?
>>34157631
>there is a chance their steel will be as good as American in 20 years.
There's also a chance that a hummingbird will fly to Mars with the Washington Monument strapped to his ass.
>>34156126
Its the same "electromagnetic propulsion" (brushless electric motors) that the royal navy has been using on their subs for for the past 7 years.
the astute class will still be top dog until maybe the french barracuda class comes out or americans start to build better hunter killers rather than continue building outdated designs.
>>34157094
>This is a reference to the internal method of turning the propeller, rather than having a steam-driven shaft
Literally nothing new. Am I supposed to be impressed by a magnetic coupler?
>>34157094
>it will use essentially use IEP to turn the propeller using electricity generated by the reactor rather than steam pressure.
Oh, that's even less impressive. Wow, an electric motor turning a shaft. Big fucking deal. Much impress.
how the fuck is china going to make a groundbreaking sub engine if they can't make a frigging jet engine
>>34158670
> Virginia
> obsolete or outdated
Just fuck off already.
>>34159001
Its not obsolete, it would still be a very useful ship from all the tomahawk tubes.
But its still using tech that you might be able to find in the 90's
Its like building pre dreadnaughts after dreadnaught dropped.
the USN is still doing the same with arlieghs, they're a fine ship class, but they were laid down in the 80's and they still continue to build them.
You can do all the refits you wan't but after a while the structure simply becomes a barrier.
>>34156158
Not pumpjet, but shaftless rim-drive.
No shaft means no noises. And all powered by IEP means that there are literally no transmittion anymore.
>>34158010
Y-8FQ's MAD probe is longer.
>>34159191
>>34157530
I always find these graphs funny. The US constantly scores low on standardized tests, and yet is constantly ahead of pretty every one of the countries scoring so highly in every conceivable engineering and scientific endeavor. Perhaps, life is not a standardized test. Perhaps life requires abilities beyond test taking skills. Perhaps the people who write the tests are not the sharpest tools in the shed.
I thought the Red October was propelled by running a strong electrical signal through water that passes through the ship and magnetically accelerating it. This would probably be much quieter than a rotating screw of any kind.
>>34159345
Also helps that the disparity between the best and worst students make these charts less useful than one might think.
>>34159191
i gave your mum a shaftless rim-drive last night
there were lots of noises and transittion
>>34159191
>No shaft means no noises
The noise doesn't come from the shaft. Noise is generated by the cavitation caused by the blades slicing through the water. It doesn't matter if there's a shaft or not, the blades make the noise.
>>34159373
Exactly. A magnetohydrodynamic drive makes no mechanical contact to push the water, and that's what makes it silent.
>>34157094
Youre telling me the Chinese have figured out electric drive? Ye Gods, it's not like they haven't been running diesel boats nigger!
>>34159345
>and yet is constantly ahead of pretty every one of the countries scoring so highly in every conceivable engineering and scientific endeavor
It's called immigration yuo dumbfuck.
Get back to me when they revolutionize their local ecosystems out of complete ruin.
>>34157073
We also have an overly large sample size of students from lower performing schools compared to most nations that trumpet their OECD scores. If you even that discrepancy out we perform quite well.
It's too bad that it's politically incorrect to bring this up, though, because it would save an awful lot of fucking up our educational system that goes on trying to raise our overall schools.
>>34157530
How are these scores weighted, because the only data point we have is Mean Score and it's not in score order?
>>34159345
Did I give you permission to reply to me?
>>34156126
Wake me up when China makes some blade designs worth a damn since the blades is where it begins and ends when it comes to submarine noise.
Asians > Americans
Asian University = Developing Caterpillar Drive from Red October
American University = Bachelors in Underwater Basket Weaving
