I would like to have a conversation about the .44 AutoMag.
That's nice. Who with?
>>34154687
Looks gross.
Nice conversation :^)

Jeff Cooper wanted the army to switch to a short barrel carbine in 44 automag.
>>34154687
It's a pretty cool pistol that actually isn't that great.
>>34154826
He devised a concept for an AR in .44AMP, but I don't know if he thought it should be the standard infantry rifle.
Either way it would be retarded if he said it should.
Didn't the thing jam all the time?
>>34156274
Sort of, mostly for the fact that most factory ammo was converted from .308 or .30-06 casings, but wasn't trimmed very carefully, resulting in variations of case length, you'd get enough tiny inconsistencies like these in an average box of commercial ammo that you'd really get poor reliability out of them a lot of the time.
You get around this by having .44AMP brass specially made by an outift like Starline, or by taking special care into loading your own.
You can get it to actually load and perform this way, though the issue remains that this gun kind of batters itself and starts to show kind of worrying wear at around 3000rds
If you're insistent on shooting the .44AMP, I would sooner suggest the Wildey Automatic, which not only is better made, but has an adjustable gas, which is a very appealing feature for what's basically a handloading man's guns.

It's certainly an interesting design. It uses a rotating bolt, but is recoil operated. When fired the barrel recoils slightly on the frame before stopping. This imparts momentum to the bolt carrier which continues rearward and cycles. It's kind o neat to see. Later "Automags" are simple single link short recoil guns. The original was also available in .357 AMP, which was a .44 AMP cartridge necked down to .357.
>>34156274
Yes, it was infamous for being a jam-o-matic, which is a shame because it is such a cool gun. At least we have fiction.
>>34154687
If you get one I suggest investing in a set of reloading dies and a couple hundred pieces of Starline brass. Makes shooting your Automag economical and much more fun. I've never had any real issues as far as reliability. I keep the gun well lubricated and maintain a firm grip when shooting. It isn't a particularly comfortable gun to shoot and some people cannot even rack the slide, being so stiff. With that said, I love mine and it always garners attention at the range.

>>34157761
What if you put a Kriss style recoil comp on the front?
just a sec, painting.
Just get a deagle and call it a day. At least then ammo in plentiful and you have a large enough community to help make it shine.
>>34157960
Get both.
Yellow for wire/spring/lever/spacemagic.
Red for gears/bolts/fiddlybits
Black for heavy-ass weight similar to the force of recoil.
3d print yourself a housing and add a thumb-hole, I'd buy one (after I do a bit more weight training).
>>34157754
How much did your Automag run you?
>>34158035
>>34158051
I got mine for $900 in the original box. Was lucky and found a set of dies for $50 and brass from Starline is surprisingly common and affordable.
>>34154687
Honestly man I really dislike that "sci-fi look". It looks like a prop gun from a b movie.
Why do the .44's get so much attention while the other calibers are practically ignored? They have calibers still in production, and I think they look way nicer.
>>34158073
Its already heavy and kind of unwieldy. Tacking on extra stuff is just going to make it too big to carry and zero fun to shoot.
>>34158082
They even made one in .30 carbine, what's not to love about that?
>>34158110
>>34158082
I love that it looks like a funky prop. Nothing else out there really looks or works like it.
The later "Automag" pistols are completely unrelated mechanically to the Model 180.
>>34158106
>zero fun to shoot
lies lies and slander, but I think you are right.
Truely I'm just jealous of people who own large handguns that use a different mechanism than revolvers.
I just want a Kard dammit!
I knew a guy in Texarkana with two of them. He picked them up in the late 70s. Made disparaging comments about jamming but after he got better with reloading they got a lot more reliable for him.
>>34158077
That's a great price for such a collectible gun. Congrats anon.
>>34154687
Okay
Why the fuck isnt it in 10mm Magnum?
Do you have any idea how stupid a decision it was to dump that?
Also that thin metal grip hurts when it recoils, you need a squishy rubber backstrap for it.
>>34158082
>>34158082
This just makes me want a Desert Eagle in .30 carbine with a double stack magazine (lets go for 15 rounds).
>>34158377
So YOUR the man who crushed my hand at that meet and greet!
>>34158122
MY FUCKING DICK
>>34158082
The AMT ones are quite a bit different and way less thought out.
They usually require some work done if you want them to run.
>>34158082
can you even hold it? the grip must be huge for .30 cal you'd need spider fingers
>>34158169
This a thousand times. They just have to make it look less like it was made out of tools in my garage. It has the potential to be FUTURE as fuck.
>>34154687
Some guys bought everything and are going to be making new Auto Mags. MSRP will be $3,499.
>>34163145
Gee, I could buy a Wildey or Desert Eagle and have a much more reliable and sturdy pistol with more widely and cheaply available ammo and reloading components.
.44AMP will stay a dead end, I doubt it's getting picked up much again.

> We have developed an ambidextrous safety, several improvements for the magazine, improved bolt, barrel latch, quick removable/replaceable front sight, improved cocking piece, and a .22 conversion. All of these will be put into production after the gun. We have switched materials from 416 stainless to 410 stainless. We have made over 20 improvements to the Auto Mag.
