I think one big advantage that MARSOC/Raiders has right now is that they draw heavily from Marine Corps Recon, Force Recon, and Infantry. So you have a big pool of candidates who have years of conventional infantry experience that they can bring to bear over the Seals who recruit directly. Although DESU it seems kinda redundant for both the Marines and Navy to have separate op8tor groups when the whole purpose of the Marine Corps is to do infantry shit for the navy above the high water mark.

MARSOC requires you to be at least a E-4 before even being considered for selection, even then I've known dudes who passed training but got canned due to "attitude incompatibility" with MARSOC.
The SEALS just want fit people to join and they don't screen them like MARSOC does. See all the books, movies, and other trash the SEALS do compared to MARSOC. In MARSOC, that kind of opsec breach would get your ass sent to Bethesda.

>The ACU program was literally a multi-billion dollar drain.
You obviously don't know what the hell you're talking about. UCP was the camouflage pattern developed for the ACU. The uniform costs were by far the biggest expenditures from that program. Regardless, UCP was a complete and total failure, costing the tax payers millions. However, the army's current pattern, Scorpion W2, was developed before for the FFW modernization program. That camouflage pattern already belonged to the government and is what is being fielded today.

As far as that fuddery:
>gotsta have two camos otherwize it won't blend
...well that's retarded. The new multi-environment patterns have been demonstrated to outperform previous patterns in a multitude of testing batteries. As it turns out, adopting a pattern specifically for use in the Sahara and one for the Amazon is fucking retarded. Soldiers cover many hundreds of miles in any given theater of operations. The camouflage needs change immensely over that area due to climate, irrigation, altitude, rainfall, time of day, and a shitload of other variables. Even the Marine Corps, which did adopt an arid and tropical pattern, had to address this problem with a neutral brown coloration that has multi-environment properties. By its very nature as a "transitional" pattern, multicam and scorpion are objectively the best types of pattern to be fielded in mixed vegetation, semi-arid regions, and urban areas (the places where people live and wars are typically fought).

The damnedest thing that simply escapes you retards is the fact that M81 was terrible. Demonstrably so, and it was this reason that the Marine Corps initially sought to replace it.

Bullshit, MARSOC gets special budgetary considerations. The problem there is that the Marine Corps underfunded them to slide money around elsewhere because Marines.

>>34159069

Definitely true, but that's contributed to so much mission creep that it's ridiculous. JSOC started out as a small, agile counterterror unit meant to deal with hostage situations. It has become the personal force of Cabinet Secretaries outside of the chain of regular command that has become too clunky with too many component parts and too tied to the pace of Washington's decision making to be effective at what it was originally intended to do.

They provide the same level of protection as a regular helmet, they're just cut higher above the ear so that its more comfortable to wear earpro/comms gear. >>34159113
JSOC and MARSOC prefer BDU not because they think its a superior pattern but because its so common among irregular forces and nigger armies worldwide. It helps them blend in and keeps their adversaries from realizing who exactly they are fighting because their equipment looks similar enough at a distance to local forces.

for example, >>34158512
>>34158526
the guy in these photos is not only in M81 woodland but using a G3. If the mission simply required they use a 7.62 battle rifle, they would've gone the cheaper route and grabbed one of the many m14s the navy has in the armory. But he's using a G3 because like M81 Woodland they are highly prevalent weapons all over Africa and other niggery parts of the world so it helps them blend in a little better in the sense of looking like local forces and not foreign oper8tors.
>>
>>34159377

I guess stemming from this is another problem.

How the fuck does MARSOC deploy? JSOC has the 24th STS as a component element, USASOC operates hand in hand with AFSOC partner elements, and SEALs have SWCC and Naval logistics anywhere that AFSOC isn't operating hand in hand with them, but what the fuck does MARSOC do?

They aren't low-drag like certain elements of USASOC or SEALs so I presume reliance upon AFSOC for mission critical logistics and JTAC duties, but AFSOC is already stretched with being farmed out to various SF Groups. Do they have to suck big blue dick, or do they rotate in where SF is pulling out and link up with STTs already in the field?

It boggles the mind.

That doesn't work. They can probably piggy back on the methods that SEALs use to infiltrate initially, but they don't have the working partnership with AFSOC that they Army has, nor are there Navy or Marine units that fill the role of SOF aviation like both the Air Force and the Army have.

Effectively this means that to carry out their mission they are tethered to the covert logistics for existing operations or they must offer sloppy blowjobs to AFSOC commanders in order to get help from special tactics.

From what I remember, it's for morale, not to blend in. SF guys didn't want to seem like they were better and wanted to fit in with the guys they were working with, so they wore woodland. It makes the Afghans think they're on the same level as their Western counterparts if they wear the same uniform.

I was thinking that too. It makes more sense. I listened to an interview where the SF guy only mentioned unit cohesion as the reason to wearing woodland. Some reporters stopped wearing those blue vests because the enemy could easily spot them and use them as a line of fire.

I don't know who told you that, but that's not the reason. Plates only need very thin backers to make them IV 4. Anybody getting issued a plate carrier is either getting those backers or a carrier with the backers sewn in.

The reason for a plate carrier over a soft armor slick vest is that it gives the same area coverage protection you would get from a full armor vest. It's just like wearing an MTV, IBA, or IOTV when both vests are worn together. But, you have the option to ditch the full armor vest and just roll with your plate carrier at a moment's notice. All your pouches and shit can stay on the plate carrier making things simple.

So, if you're in a unit where 99% of the time you just wear a plate carrier, this makes sense. In the times you need to wear full armor- either because training range rules, photo-op rules, or some operational threat determination, you double up and wear the soft armor under it.

I got pictures of Rangers and Euros doing the same thing.

The biggest advantage that MARSOC will have will be the same one that Rangers have when they move on over to Delta. They have legit infantryman who know how to work in a firefight. I'm not trying to rag on SEALS, they're amazing at what they do and aim for. But from a lot of accounts, when shit hits the fan you can tell the difference between an operator who's only ever kicked in doors and an operator who came from the infantry.

Army dude from earlier. Had SEALs and Navy EOD come into our compound sometimes for joint operations and they were always prima donnas. My more choice complaints are towards the Navy EOD, who were basically glorified demo and breachers and were lacking a lot of basic EOD skills. But both groups had this vibe of "we're better than you" and seemed to think we'd be impressed by their top secret clearance (yeah, nigga evereybody in the building has one....) or their non-GI equipment (yeah nigga everybody in the building is using high tech shit...).

Have to say that Rangers were excellent at infantry dude shit.

Didn't cross too much with Marines, but trained some of their combat engineers and those guys were very polite and eager to learn. No boot Jarhead moto bullshit from them.

I have little good to say about SEALS. If you need someone to swim through the ocean, sneak ashore, and throw a thousand bullets at some bad guys face they're your guys. Otherwise, meh. I think their attitude comes from their Navy budget and Hollywood veneration. I mean, when they get in trouble their punishment is Ranger School.

Rangers seemed alright, I didn't have much interaction with them even though we were on their FOB for a while. They were always sneaking off in the middle of the night.

ODAs were legit. I could definitely tell the difference between the 18x guys and the infantry dudes. Only met two triple tabbers. They were...quiet. Worked with them directly in Europe too. They were fun.

Then the various alphabets. Agency meh. No Such Agency, no idea what those fuckers we're talking about, way over my head, but they always delivered. State was competent but was more concerned with strategic level shit I didn't care about. DEA only wanted to know about drugs.

The EOD guys were cool.

How'd they really get discovered then?

I always assumed they were found by goat herders but killed them, the Taliban found the bodies, and went after them.
>>
>>34166846
That'd be pretty difficult to ascertain given Luttrell's history of contradictions.
>>
>>34166846
Because doing a bunch of fakeout helicopter drops alerted the enemy the US was in the area. This was done because the SEALs inserted like 3km instead of the 10-13km the Marines had been using.

When guys are inserting less than five miles away from an enemy force that got put on alert, that's rolling some real dice.

Unrelated (probably) to getting made was the radios going down being essentially being chalked up to "bad luck". I will forever and ever suspect that the embarrassing truth is that the SEAL team had outdated encryption on their radios (it gets updated weekly, and it's easy forget if you have high op tempo), leaving them unable to talk to anybody until somebody smart at the FOB figured it out and loaded old encryption in to match and talk to the SEALs.
>>
>>34166846
The accepted story is that they landed 1km away from the town and the local Taliban just went out and ambushed them. Like >>34166882 said we will probably never know the real story because Marcus keeps changing it.
>>
>>34166902

>prima donna SEALs refuse to hike the extra 10km because they want to get in and out quicker

Someone should have vetoed this. Between SOAR and SEALs several someones dropped the fucking ball and the Marines gave them the room to do it. SOAR should have had enough intel to know not to drop a recon team that close to hostiles while telegraphing what they were doing so obviously. SEALs should have known better than to infiltrate that closely. Marine commanders should have had veto power over the operational details.

The problem with unsafe "cowboys" is that 99 times out of 100, they come out unscatched due to dumb luck. I've had similar problems in training environments trying to explain the safe and right way to people and some ignorant ass will pop up with "Yeah, well I deployment I did [totally unsafe and hairbrained thing] and I survived!". I'm sure the SEALs had done dozens of missions with such a low level of preparation and fallback planning and those turned out fine. When you start cutting corners on running missions, it becomes part of the "culture" of the unit, and it's hard to talk people out of cutting corners once they start- at least until a catastrophic failure.
>>
>>34167140
>Marine commanders should have had veto power over the operational details.
this is how you get nothing done
>>
>>34167179
You, you know what you're talking about.
>>
>>34167179

I guess that's why I don't like cowboys. I like professionals.

>>34167182

The Marines were the ones who tracked the guy down, discovered his plot to intervene in the elections, and sniffed out his affiliations. They wouldn't have approved anything fucking stupid, but they wanted something done.

If the SEALs wouldn't compromise then they should have been cut out of the operations and the Snipers should have gotten the go ahead on popping him.
>>
>>34167196
>I guess that's why I don't like cowboys. I like professionals.

I know, the pain is real. I hated trying to train guys who thought they were hot shit.

The other part of "cowboys" are the guys who come in with the "I'm better than you" attitude (ie- moto marines taking over an Army AO, Airborne unit taking over a Leg AO, Special Operators taking over a conventional unit's mission) and totally ignoring what the "lesser" unit has to say. It can lead to seriously underestimating the enemy; I have many examples, but one would be having worked with a dismounted Army "leg" infantry unit who knew the area very well. They kept extreme IR discipline at night because they knew at least some of the insurgents were night vision capable. An airborne unit comes in to augment them for a big mission and they have themselves lit up like the forth of July under IR- every single joe has a strobe or IR chemlite, and dudes leaving their IR flashlights on. Despite the repeated protests of the other unit.

(((((somehow))))) the insurgents knew we were coming and starting shooting in the general direction. Not effective fire, but it blew the operation and we missed the possible HVT.

I hate people who won't listen.
>>
>>34167278
It's amazing that some people either don't know or ignore that cheap Russian and Chinese NV gear exists and that even poor insurgents can get their hands on them.
>>

>>
>>34167278
>(((((somehow)))))

>>
>>34167278

Most of the heinous shit that I have knowledge of is intel related. I've heard from guys who've actually had sources get killed because one of ours found out who a source was and talked reckless about it in front of locals. Surprise, surprise, dead agent. I've also heard rumor of sources winding up on the kinetic list, but that's pretty extreme.

If you want really bad, well, you ever see what happens when the local CIA boys get wind that a military unit is working a productive HUMINT source? It's the most rage inducing thing you'll ever see.
>>
>>34167339
what do the spooks do?
>>
>>34167325
Just look at way enemy numbers inflate with each retelling. A tip off.

Also no reading that can indisputably say what happened- since nobody else was there, but pretty much anybody with relevant military experience is going to notice red flags in the story.
>>
>>34167339
Let me guess, pissed and felt like their dicks were being stepped on? Demanding to Shut. It. Down.

>>34167333
Oh, you poor ignorant goyim.
>>
>>34167393
>>34167404

They poach the source. CIA culture has institutional cannibalism to a toxic degree. Since HUMINT is very personality driven most case officers, or I guess "core collectors" now, might be trained to recruit and handle agents but they aren't suited for the job. So the cocky little shits get out of the farm only to discover that most of them aren't dick at what they've been training to do because they have the wrong personality for it. So the ones who can't do it work sketchy walk-ins and try to poach sources from anyone that they can, while the ones who can do the work have to guard themselves against backstabbing from the majority. It's ugly, very ugly, and it's normal there.

The script when they poach from .mil usually looks like this.

>CIA: Hey, I heard you guys have a source.
>Mil: You heard wrong.
>CIA: Nah lol, I have proof that this guy is your source. You should let me handle him.
>Mil: Get rekt.
>CIA: lol k
>CIA snitches to his bosses in DC
>CIA bosses bitch to chain of command
>Chain of command caves
>Ordered to turn over the source to be handled by the CIA

That type of shit is why nobody likes to deal with those assclowns.
