You think there's a big difference in collectibility between the M1 and the M1Ds currently available at CMP? Neither will have matching parts, but the regular M1s will have the most new production parts. Im guessing the M1s will be better shooters.

$450–1000+ depending on date, manufacturer, and condition. Poles also made a few Gew.98 copies (marked variously W.98, W.24, Wz.98a), and refurbished more besides.

Turkish-used ones are on the lower end of the price range yes, but they were all made in either Germany or Czechoslovakia.

So my uncle has a k98a, 1917/1920 dates, erfurt. It's still in the original stock but sombody along the line cut the stock down to a sporter and also filled in the sling hole in the but of the stock. The rifle has pitting on the outside, but the bolt works fine and feeds fine. Surprisingly the bore looks very good, the rifle went through hurricane Katrina but you wouldnt know looking at it. Im wondering how much its worth at the moment and if its possible to get a repro or new k98a stock. Would it fit in a k98k stock? Ive done a bit of reserch but ive seen conflicting statements. For what its worth its also a ww2 bring back. My great grandpa was a timberwolf and fought in France. Pic related, rifle looks like this but in slightly worse condition and without the sling.

Original stocks and handguards are expensive, but obtainable with $$$. Finding the metal parts may be more difficult. New reproduction stocks are available http://www.fox-military.com/en/stock.php?id_produkt=46 and run a couple hundred dollars.
Would it fit in a k98k stock?
Yes, but the Kar.98k handguard will have nothing to hold it at the rear and may not fit.

You might be able to find a replacement stock if you lool around. No, a 98k stock will not work. Differences in the trigget guard and what not. As is its probably a $200 rifle.

Another question, why would the Germans in WW2 be using such an old rifle. I hypothesized that the volksturmm might have used it, and that's how my great grandpa got it but i"m not sure.
>>
>>34148376
Buddy had one in Nato. I would have it looked at by a gunsmith if you have any doubts. We shoot his lots and never had an issue. It seemed as well made as any other Number 3.
>>

Not sure what they are worth in the Stat es but you can't go wrong with an AG-42B.
>>
>>34148425

Because functionally it's basically the same as the Kar.98k. No reason not to use a perfectly good rifle.

>>
>>34148425
Think about the fact that in WW2 the design of the K-98 was around 40 years old. How old is the design of the M-4 or the AK series? More like 50 + years old.

For a Syrian contract thats a tad high. I usually see them top out around 850. A French one will usually be 1000-1500.
>>34148425
Because it worked, because it was functionally the same as their 98k, and because Germany couldn't realistically afford not to. WW2 was a house of cards even before the war, at least economically.

Shitty pic because I don't have an actual camera.

As far as I can tell, as I'm no expert, it's in okay-ish condition. Not perfect, but also not super fucked up either. Someone carved random triangles into the stock and thsere was a small amount of rust under the barrel bands. There was also a dick ton of gunk under the stock. It certainly seems functional enough though.
>>
>>34149476
Barrel condition?
>>
>>34149476
Oh don't you worry you can sand those triangles out and refinish the stock. Make it nice and glossy.

Also strip the finish and get some cold-blue to fix the metal finish.

They work fine. Bit over designed and built. Functionally they're pretty identical to an SKS without it being obvious.

Ammo is their weakest point. 7.62x45 doesn't exist. the reloading dies cost me $250 alone. (you can form .220 swift into x45). Surplus ammo that i've shot has mostly been hit or miss, one time the extractor tore the rim off one (just the edges on either side, the case itself was intact). I've never seen surplus in brass also, its always been lacquered steel case.

I think the majority that were made were actually made in x39, if you get one of those you'll have a much better time feeding it obviously.

Wasn't talking about the stock. The rear sight in the early scalloped kind. a 1941 barrel would of came with the rounded one that has the stake on the other side. This was an "improvement" or the barrel date is wrong.

Looks like a Remington triggerguard and floorplate also.

I know you weren't talking about the stock. I wouldn't really think much of it as US "collectors" are big on making things "correct" so they switch parts left in right. I really dislike them. It's why I don't have a US arm other than my M1898.

>milsurp
>semi auto
>battle rifle

Well if you're looking for something that actually has detachable magazines, you're looking at G43s, SVTs, and the few M14s that were issued in semi-auto form. Almost everything else was rarely issued in semi-auto originally, and so there are very few civilian-legal CETMEs or FALs that haven't been rebuilt or reproduced. If they just have to be big hueg, an M1 Garand is cheaper (but muh en bloc clips).

If you want something that is actually a battle rifle AND has a commonly available cartridge AND is true, never destroyed milsurp, SVT-40s might be the best choice. Prices have probably gone up in the last few years, so I don't think you'll see any for less than $1k.

>why would the Germans in WW2 be using such an old rifle
Bolt actions are sturdy as shit, very few moving parts, and honestly it's not unusual to see ~20 year old individual rifles still in service, and it's not like they're going to phase out a bunch of older rifles right in the middle of a world war. I'm sure there are plenty of M16 samples still in service or storage that were fired during the Gulf War.

If you're referring to the Mauser design itself, it's not like the most popular bolt action design in the world was terribly outdated in the 30s. If you aren't aware, the M16's design is upwards of 60 years old now, and is by no means "obsolete"

Many of these would probably be fun for historical curiosity, but if you don't reload buying a rifle chambered in anything other than 7.62 NATO or 7.62x54r would mean you would never shoot it.

Plus there were twice as many SVT-40s produced as all these other rifles combined. I don't imagine the ones chambered in less common cartridges are cheap, but I do imagine they'd be hard to find if you were looking for a specific model.

I don't remember the street address, just that it was to the west of the cemetery and north of a McDonald's in Gettysburg. Prices based on condition, no runs below around $450. The 1903A1 was about 1150, the 03A3 closer to $550. I didn't look at other prices but the sheer amount of good quality muskets leads me to think they sat in the $600-$800 range. Receiver was probably used to build a rifle in 1916 that later had the barrel damaged beyond repair during WW1 or the Russian Civil War, so it was used to build a new rifle.

The best research material I've found is good books on the subject. The best being the ones that cover a niche subject, like just one particular gun or couple of guns. Some, like French guns is unfortunately lacking (at least in English), but at least has a good community on gunboards with lots of information. Some like Japanese guns has a good community that writes books, BUT almost all of them you can't get from Amazon and have to buy straight from the author.

So really, make friends with older collectors.

I was told I can look up these numbers and stamps to find out who made it, where it went and what not. Does it look nice?

Might have slightly overpaid; IDK the Enfield market these days. Your rifle was made at the Royal Small-Arms Factory in Enfield Lock, a district of London. Date looks like 1918.

What I hate is being in New York and having to have all my online ammo shipped to an FFL only to be fucked for some 25-50 dollar fee ontop of it. Bought some PPU ammo for 14 dollars a box but the fee some of the gun stores wanted was out the ass

Do you really have to ship to an FFL for ammo? That's gayer than 8 guys fucking 9 guys.

I can't ship ammo to my house in New York. SAFE act requires that if you buy ammo online it has to go to an FFL first which is retarded because ammo purchases don't need BGC's and the purchases aren't recorded. Its really dumb because my 14 dollar boxes of .303 I bought online turned into 17 dollar boxes after the fucking "FFL transfer fee" which is pretty much a gun store saying "not buying my overpriced ammo? lemme fuck you in this purchase because fuck you"

Firstly, you more or less don't need to use it, but if you are smart and safety concious, you can buy a ring that slips onto the end knob and makes it much easier to use. Maybe shop for a cheaper one though.

When the Soviets simplified the receiver production in 1942, eliminating all machining that was not absolutely required to produce a working receiver, they still cut that flat on the left of the receiver wall for the cocking piece to rest on. If they didn't think this safety was a necessary feature of the rifle they would have eliminated it.
>fun fact doing so rests the firing pin directly onto the primer, have fun.

In california it's probably my only chance of getting a PPK of some sort since they're on the federal C&R list.

No, just a Molot refub. I don't think there are any actual "new" Mosin receivers being made; I got to talk with a couple owners of KO-91/30M and both their rifles have new barrels and sights on recycled receivers.

Safeties on a infantry rifle are superfluous. The Lebel and Berthier don't have them either.

They were never intended to be used in combat anyway, so it didn't matter at the time.

Is there a way to convert a Mauser 98 action to cock on close?
>>
>>34165495
No. Just buy a Mauser 93 action.

Yeah, just make the 45° cam on the bolt body into a right angle. All Mausers are cock-on-close through the final locking of the bolt.
