Its a Riuxin with the cheapest stones i found:
I added a 2000er and a 3000er Anself (the 8000&10.000 Anself is on the way)
I strope on wood[balsa and normal wood] (the green thing on the right with chromium oxid).

Everyone loves to rip on belt sharpening, but I butchered half a cow or better and it's still shaving the hair off of my arms. (can't say the same for my bargain pakistani steel)
It's the only way I've found to get knives shaving sharp with extreme speed fast and with absolute ease. It's like cheating.

Anything will do in a pinch.

Take a coarse diamond stone and get the edge hair shaving sharp. If you can't do that, more practice needed before moving on to a fine stone.

I sharpened everything I have on only a dc4 and a cc4. Mirror finished razor sharp edges every time.
>>
>>34146017
>>34146058
I've seen those things in action. They put a fucking beautiful mirror edge on a knife. They are no joke. You can buy the American made one but from the reviews I've seen the Russian one is cheaper and better made.
>>
Edge Pro with Chosera stones and a kangaroo strops with 0.5-0.25µ diamond paste.

Against my advice, I once had a guy test sharpness of one of my knives by running his thumb down the edge (?!). He said he felt the edge "pop" into his skin with almost no pain, and should have probably gotten stitches.

I do, it does fine.

I buy King brand Japstones from Amazon. Price is good for the performance, they cut fast and seem true to their grit spec. They do wear faster than others I've used, so they have to flattened often.
>>
>>34143617
The fact is, no matter how good you are, you cannot maintain a bevel as well as a jig therefore you cannot sharpen as efficiently by hand as with a jig.

Yes lots of sharpening bullshit out there, but also a lot of stuff that actually improves the situation and is not a 'shortcut'. Indeed setting up a jig typically takes longer.

I have the 3000er. Just fine enoug to get it sharper than spliting hairs (instant cut). But this is hard to get and the stone makes no real polish.
So i recommend to buy these two for 13$.

For stropping:
Go and buy some wood (flat and 2cm wide, cut it and you can add your stropping paste and use your riuxin). If you make a double edge, you can resharp faster.

Yeah this is fairly good. It's not magic but it's easy to use especially for blades where the actually sharpened part is really narrow like with most of your usual pocket knives.

Use a very fine wheel with lubricant at a slower speed and it's still faster and more even than using a whetstone and oil

Oh boy where to start.. The cheapest way to get a good, properly sharp edge, at lest in my opinion, is with some cheap Wheat Stones. Learn burr to burr sharpening, plenty of YouTube videos. If you want to get results faster, do the rough work with the wheatstones and put the final edge on with a Spyderco Sharpmaker. The Sharpmaker is also good for serrations, I still use mine for that.

If you want really super sharp high polished stuff, you are going to have to spend more.

A skew of water stones 400-6,000ish and some strops, and hundreds of hours of practice.

Or a set angle system like a Edge Pro Apex, Wicked Edge, Tormex, ect... These are expensive, but will yield very good results with in 5-10 hours of practice and some youtube instruction.

I mostly use my Wicked Edge, that's how I got the results of pic related. But I also have water stones, 1x30 belt sander, among others for different uses.

The Work Sharp is worth looking into... But with any non water cooled motorized sharpener, you have to make sure not to over heat the blade. Also it seems like it will take off a lot of material, so maybe something for cheaper knives.

>>34144501
I'm planning on getting a T8 sometime soon. Less exact than my Wicked Edge, but it will better for bulk sharpening for the kind of clients I find more often than not.

>>34144934
>>34144870
You two don't know what you are talking about, this is a Tormek T8, it's a very slow speed wheel, that sits in a water trough. It's effectively a spinning water stone. Overheating is not a problem, too slow and water cooled. Also the 8" wheel is so large compared to the supper thin edge bevel, the concaveness is effectively non-existent. And that is if you hold the edge perfectly in place, in reality the knife will move a bit, counter acting any concaveness.
>>
>>34142917
Oh boy.

A thread full of people who probably actually know stuff, and people who don't; and I can't tell them apart.

I'm a pleb who uses a cheap aluminum oxide slab from China I found at a pawn shop. It cost me $2 and it probably cost them 20 cents.

I put water on it and it makes my knives sharp enough for almost anything, though admittedly I wouldn't want to try shaving with em.
>>
>>34142917
I ( >>34147720) should add, for most people, I agree, spending $600+ (non the less $1,500+) on sharpening equipment is crazy.

I did, because I'm really into knives and sharp things in general. My sharpening equipment has more than paid for it's self and a lot of my knife collection over the past 5 years.

T. riuxin guy
>>
>>34146231

I had that. it was okay, you'll eat away more metal than you need too, even with the lower speed setting.

After market belts of higher grit than what you get, plus a power controller to lower the rpms even more than what the worksharp provides, will allow for much better sharpening.

now I rather just use it for the getting bad chips out, then finishing it by hand with stones. Also the fact that you're kinda stuck with a convex grind sucks.

That's a hard one really, they don't come cheap.

The Lansky set up is ok, but they are not that durable, and not flexible at all. The KME set up looked great, but I'm pretty sure it's gone up quite a bit in price, to the point where it maybe worth jumping up to the Edge Pro Apex. There is this Russian one that the YouTuber Wanglerstar reviewed that looks good, but once again, I think it went up a lot in price, maybe worth considering if it is around Edge Pro Price.

Obviously I think the Wicked Edge is great, I've had mine for many years and have continued to upgrade it with the newer generations, but the price is hard to swallow. Same with the Tormek T8. I would not suggest those two unless you know you can make money off of them.

Consider the cheap option though: get some cheap wheat stones, do the rough work with that, and then put the final edge on with a Spyderco Sharpmaker. This helps you practice free hand and still get easy shaving edges with less practice. And the Sharpmaker is worth buying, I still use mine a lot for fast touch ups and serrations.

>>34147886
As high as I have. 1,600 ceramic and 5/3.5 micron leather strops (@ -1 degree from the hard stones).

Sometimes it's very hard to get a hair splitting edge with a single primary bevel. Sometimes, if I'm intentionally going for that level of sharpness, which really is well past utilitarian, I'll fully sharpen then knife like normal and then go back and micro-bevel @+1 degree with my 1,000-1,600 stones and strops.

There are other factors as well. While it is possible to get very wide hair splitting edges (lets say 20dps+), because hair splitting is more about the apex sharpness and not the geometry, thinner does help. Also some larger grain and high carbide steels are nearly impossible to get to that level, at lest with my current set up and abilities.

Your reasoning? I agree, it's not a full sharpening system, it takes material off too slowly. However I find it to be a very useful tool if used with other equipment.
>>
>>34148228
Yes, the geometry and steel is importyant.
I have only this 1095 steel selfdefence knife.

I have a 13->15° angle and i think we sharpen our knifes äqual :)

Because Im a student ( no money ) I had to buy this and after a few days praktice [ also need this because the knife had no edge] i have no prob. with it. 50$ for the jig, stones and the stropping powder + wood ->more than hairsplitting, is really good I think but the Edge Pro has more comf. and better stones I think

peace from Germany

Just a regular 3000/8000 whetstone. Put automatic transmission fluid on it and don't drop it. They're like 4 bucks and work better than all of the expensive meme-tools if you know what you're doing.
>>
>>34148455
It was my first foray into sharpening, like you said it doesn't have any rods with low grit to really fix up a poor edge. Sharp keeper, not sharp maker. That and the plastic is cheap to the point that the divots wobble a bit making it inconsistent. Not horribly so, but enough to be annoying. Honestly I see no reason whatsoever to use one over a typical stone setup unless you're sharpening something with a really weird geometry.

no just hel that /k/ have more guys with a sharpensysthem. Cheap or not, doesnt matter!
Every knife needs something, but the most giving just a fuck on shappening

10000-> it is, finer grid mean more stropping for polishing+sparpness.
More stropping means less max. sharpness.
This is the reason why you cant splitt hairs after a 1000-1500 because the edge gets round from heavie stropping + i have a 1095 on 60HRC(its good to go)
>>
>>34148495
>Just a regular 3000/8000 whetstone
And spend 3 days re-profiling any knife wasn't already kind of sharp when you started. Nothing wrong with owning more than one stone, a 400/800 or something saves a lot of time.

>>34148632
>>34148663
I typically only go up to 1,600 before stropping, and I can get nearly clean mirror edges. If I'm trying to get a mirror polish while free handing, higher grits do help things out. I have 6k and 8k water stones, but I very rarely use them.

On thinner, smaller grain, knives I have no problem getting hair splitting edges at 1,600 and with a lot of stropping.

It's very important to back of a degree or so when you are soft stropping, to avoid rounding the edge.

Yes, it is, but the lether is soft what means pressur on the edge. If you have a good stones on 1600, its like mine on 3000 I think but it takes to long to make a instant hair cut and this is my goal : getting it sharper than hairsplitting within minutes and less stropping.

The speed sharpeners are ok if you just need to touch up an edge real quick, and have high quality knives, just use them sparingly and make sure the edge is good to start with. You can use a steel or ceramic stick if you're good at angles but for God's sake use it correctly. Lots of fast strokes, one pass on each side of the blade, move from the tip at the top to the base at the bottom. None of those silly long straight strokes repeated over and over again, you're just getting the feathers out of the edge. Don't sharpen your knife hot, bleach dulls blades immediately.

looks really cool but it's 400 bucks. I suck at sharpening so I'd consider it.

How do you suck at sharpening, it's the easiest shit on the planet. Can you shoot straight?

Exactly what I said. Don't bleach a freshly sharpened knife. It doesn't turn the blades into safety scissor like instruments but it'll fuck up that nice edge you just put on there. Don't ask me why, that's something I don't understand but I know from experience that bleach will dull a blade. Maybe it's because I made a living with a knife so it only matters in that context.

If you mean the chemical H2O2 it can oxidize the thin edge/ remove it with the little amount of H3PO4.

Bleach is corrosive and even on stainless will eat away a fine edge .
