Granted the military don't use iron sights because they have mounted optics, the average shooter shooting short distance or with a pistol usually uses iron sights.

This question relates more to the concept of aiming down ANY gun sight, not just iron sights. Vidya faggots just refer to the mechanic as iron sights regardless.

No, we do not just hipfire and hope to hit shit. Shooting faster is just a matter of tracking the sight picture and waiting until it's acceptable again to pull the trigger, regardless of the sight. The rifle is always shouldered, unless you've fucked up and let the enemy get within 20 feet of you.

During MOUT training they would teach us to look over the iron sights whenever you had to clear a room, the logic being you're looking to make sure your weapon is in line with your target. If you're pointed at the centerline of the target and your weapon is in a proper shooting stance, you'll hit center of mass at room clearing distances. This is the only instance I can think of that would even closely relate to what you mean.

In it's simplest form sights make sure the gun is straight and on target.

People always forget what sights do since hurr Durr aiming device.

But if you absolutely want to do away with them for whatever reason, as long as you use a consistent form and aim off a section of the gun you can absolutely still us it.

You're right, but missing the point. It's not 1943 anymore, optics have been durable enough to forgo dedicated irons on military rifles for some time now.

Go look at pictures of deployed M4/M16s with ACOGs. Pretty much half of them don't have a rear iron sight. Any country using the AUG or the Brits with the L85/SUSAT don't even have iron sights beyond the shit molded into the optic housing.
