They were a good military, but they were much more shrewd than pop culture believes them to be. They were slow to commit to wars or battles unless they had a high assurance of victory. They had a high ratio of winning because they picked their battles, not through having soldiers who were inhumanly mighty. The battle of Thermopylae was an aberration. Even then the numbers have been totally skewed in the retellings, because if you want a good story of heroism, you fudge it to make the enemy have more troops and the heroes to have fewer. The reality is that it was a mixed Spartan and Greek ground force of 5000-7000 Greeks vs. ~100,000 Persians. Still outnumbered, but not so much as in the pop imagination.

They were the first Greek city state to have a standing professional military and one of the only cultures throughout history where warrior culture outweighed everything else. So much so that everything other than military jobs were done by slaves in sparta.

Because of this they were able to bully the shit out of the other Greek states for a little while. They also weren't able to hang on to their empire because they were spread too thin and constantly putting down slave revolts in their own city.

Homos that buggered each other and their offspring. Essentially kept slaves so they could focus on war and training for war. Eugenics to ensure a strong race and only the greatest survive. Spartan women did get more rights than your average Greek female. Good tacticians and decent armour and weapons.

And yea, the battle of Thermopylae was pretty metal but the 300 Spartans had at least a few thousand(probably not as well trained/equipt) friends on their side and the Persians couldn't have numbered more than 500,000(probably less desu). Good story but quite a bit exaggerated these days.
