Depends on what you want, Austin is like the Liberal raft in a sea of red but its a really fun city that sets it apart from the other cities. The surrounding cities are cool if you want more space but be warned central Texas is growing so maybe look before you buy/rent. There are only two public ranges in half an hour drive from me: American Shooting Center and Hot Wells. The first is full of fuds and morons. I've been swept multiple times despite their paranoid rules (well, not as bad as Elm Fork up in Dallas) and it's always packed. Only went to Hot Wells once, but I wasn't impressed. I'd like to put my own targets up, thank you very much.

But I joined a private range a few months back and it's infinitely better. You only call hot or cold ranges when everyone needs it, and the place has enough different ranges that one is never so crowded that it gets annoying.

To be fair, all outdoor ranges in DFW are complete garbage. The two best places I've found to shoot are Eagle and Shoot Smart. Eagle is clean and quite large (25 yards) for an indoor range. Shoot Smart is also super clean, and while on the smaller side, they are also super cheap, only 5 bucks during their happy hour special.

Houston has a lot of really great business opportunities. Generally respectable, upstanding people. Crazy humid/hot.

Austin isn't gun friendly, and is politically very leftist. But the food is phenomenal, they love dogs, and it's fun to drive through. Cultural center of the state, for sure.

DFW is pleasant, Arlington has a disproportionate amount of fun stuff to do (Rangers baseball park, Cowboys Football stadium, Six Flags, and the major water park are within a few miles of each other).
Sadly, very few good ranges...

If you want any decency with shooting ranges in DFW you simply have to get a membership. Every single shooting range in urban neighborhood Texas sucks ass otherwise. This includes any public range in inner city Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Waco (although there really isn't an 'inner city' range in Waco), and DFW.

My theory is, unlike most other states, Texas has hugely major metropolitan areas in a state with favorable gun laws. Therefore, exposure to shooting is available to everyone. This includes the inner city rifraff, white trash, and niggers.
The ranges have to put strict rules in place because, let's face it, they're not exactly upstanding citizens and are generally shit for business.

The only way to weed this shit out without being prejudice (as they should be) is to implement fucking stupid rules or to rule with purse. Throw on a monthly "member fee" and all of a sudden niggers and joes rather snort meth and huff freon than spend their welfare fund on shooting some glock40's at paper. It's actually pretty clever.

Moral to the story is pay your dues, and you'll have a much better time at a members' range than a pubic one. You won't have to fight people for space and they have better amenities like reactive plates. It's money well spent.

Shoot Smart in Grand Prairie. It's a small range, but it's clean, the staff are friendly and it's pretty cheap. If you pay for a private lane they also let you shoot rifles, fire as fast as you want, and do holster work.

972 here now, was in 512 for a few years. Lonestar is pretty great, but can be crowded at times. No reactive targets either, or fruit/food. They did let me put up clays on the rifle range backstop to pop, but that was a few years ago.

This nuggetfest in February was okay, but I wish it went on for the whole weekend. Unfortunately here in Texas we need someone with land to host, and most people don't want 60+ people getting half drunk and carrying guns around. Not that they don't trust you, just that the liability goes up and if some piss-smelling kid gets drunk and shoots himself you're probably going to get sued by his parents.

This brings my next point, in TX literally everyone knows someone with land. Shit most places a few acres of land really isnt going to break the bank. Just invest in property, or friends with property.

As for land, last I checked, $3-5000 an acre within 2 hours of DFW, with some places up to $10,000/acre within 1 hour drive off a major highway. I'm afraid at this point anyone not making six figures a year is priced out of the land market for anything over 1-2 acres near the metroplex.

Can confirm Lonestar in Converse allows drawing from holster and rapid fire on short range "long as you keep it on paper." They can be cold to strangers first time out but they come around if your respectable and keep going there. I've seen a tour bus of fratty shitbirds roll through, they dont suffer fools so be wise about range behavior.

Maybe have a limited number of invites to give out? Cap it at 10 for the first meet, if all goes well you can try 15 next time. The smaller it is, the more controllable it is. When you get 60 something people out on your land, it's hard to keep track of everyone and make sure they're not fucking around like jackasses.

Of course, you'll need some way to enforce this. Without someone running security by the entrance, people could slip in and soon your crowd of 10 is 30 and it's not what you agreed to. I'd like to think /k/ommandos would respect your wishes, but I can't say everyone here is a decent person.

We talked about waivers in the discord before this last nuggetfest. The consensus seemed to be that waivers aren't going to get you out of a lawsuit if someone gets hurt. Again, this is why I think smaller meets are better and safer, because everyone can keep an eye on everyone else to ensure there isn't someone fucking around in dangerous ways.

All this talk of ranges really makes me miss my setup about 10 years ago. Me and 5-8 people, some I hardly knew, leased out a bunch of land near the Oklahoma border and had out own private 1000 yd shooting range for 2-3 years. One of the guys had a small construction business so he brought in bobcats and a front end loader to build berms and dig. A few of us would meet up each weekend at the start and work on it. We dug an 8' pit maybe 50 yards long for doing run and run type shooting and used the dirt to build the berms. We built a simple small platform, maybe 10x20, at the 1000 yd mark.

It was fucking awesome until one guy wanted to try to monetize it and went behind everyone's back with the landowner. This amounted to a bunch of rules and restrictions on when we could use the range. His whole grand scheme failed after a few months and most of us no longer keep in touch. I occasionally shoot with 2 or 3 of the guys.

Yes, I'm salty. I'm from somewhere else and moved out to West Texas. Everyone here acts like they got something to prove and it gets old after a while.

As someone from a east coast, I find most Texas drivers to be very polite, if a bit quirky. I find that the higher the posted limit, the slower people drive. On 75 in Dallas, the limit is 70 and unless it's late at night, I find the average to be 40-60 depending on traffic. The reverse is also true. On most roads marked as 35, I get passed regularly when I'm doing 45 or sometimes even 50. The general rule that everyone seems to abide by is just going with the general flow and not being an ass. Oh yea sure you get a driver every now and then who feels like doing exactly the limit, or some old fuck doing 40 on 75, and there is always that one guy who has to weave in and out of every lane trying to get ahead of everyone, but that are pretty uncommon as far as my experiences go.

Moving to Austin soon, wondering if there are any commie ranges I can practice shooting porky at.

I usually go there twice or three times a month, so it is definitely worth it to me.

FYI, you can basically do anything at the 25 yards pistol pits, but you just need to make sure the bullets are hitting the dirt and not skipping the ground and flying over towards the farms/residential areas... or you can be life banned.

The 300 and the new 400 yards rifle range will require you to pass a 4 questions test(a bit tricky, and they change the questions) and shooting ability test.

Overall, I would recommend TDSA to anyone.
I am available in October if there's anyone interested in going there to shoot.
