The French did no such thing. The majority of the so called Maquis were a bunch of fucking communists and thieves who were a menace to each other and the countryside.

The French Revolution killed the intelligent French. The Napoleonic wars killed the brave ones. The World Wars killed what was left. Now it's a husk.

Yes. At least in the US military they call it by another name instead of simply "dereliction of duty", but essentially you're trained to do what your commander insists, even if that means fighting until the last man. In the heat of the moment, you might not even notice that you're doing so until everyone is wiped out.

However, lets say you're fully aware that you're about to get a ticket to Heaven quick thanks to your overwhelming enemies. If you and your buddies, and their buddies, and everyone agreed to retreat I'm sure they'd make a show of your demotion and cowardice while you get sent to the back or kicked out. If you live in a place like North Korea or work under an honor-based system you can expect death.

In any case, retreat is a huge step from abandoning your post or going AWOL.

It depends on the situation. If you are the last line of defense for your nation's capital, expect to fight to the last man. If it's a little skirmish in a far off land, the most you might get is a demotion or a dishonorable discharge at most.
