Old 'surp thread is dead, long live new 'surp thread.
Pic related, my new additions today. M91/59, Type 38 carbine and Type 99. Type 38 has a crack around the wrist going straight back and is kinda beat up looking, but otherwise seems fine. Type 99 is a last ditch.
I've been playing a lot of Red Orchestra lately and am thinking about buying a mauser. What can I expect out of a yugo m48 compared to a lee-enfield or mosin.
>>34120540
>yugo m48
>Not a GERMAN K98 or Gewehr 98
>>34120540
Worse sights, mediocre everything else. They're decent enough guns if you like Mausers.
>>34120540
Slower than an Enfield, higher quality than a Mosin.
>>34120540
Different actions, different rounds, completely different guns aside from all being bolt actions. 8mm has dried up, .303 has been dry, and 7.62x54r is drying up. All will set you back at least $250 with Enfields setting you back the most and Mosins and Yugo Mauser going for at least $250. Enfields are cock on close, Mausers are cock on open, Mosins cock on open.
New things to put in my things
Reposting for the guy who was asking about the 7.62 Garand in the previous thread:
I don't think Springfield Armory ever made 7.62mm Garands. The NAVY converted some M1s to 7.62, those would be marked "Mk 2 Mod 0/1" though. Also H&R is a different manufacturer from Springfield so...
A bunch of foreign countries also converted theirs to 7.62, so if it has some markings in other languages it might be a re-import from a NATO member, not sure that would make it worth $1600 though.
>>34120547
im poorfag arent the german ones a lot more money?
>>34120661
2-3 times as much as an M48 or M24/47.
>>34120661
>>34120677
I am also a poorfag, didn't stop me from getting a Gewehr 98, 1917 from Danzig fully original for 350 USD.
The lighting was nice the other day so I dug out my Auto-Nugget for a portrait. The Tokarev family of rifles get such a bad rep due to the huge number of Ameriboos and Wehraboos who shill for the G-41/43 and muh preshuss Guhrahnd. Oddly enough most of those people are angry Burgers who can't afford an SVT and likely will never shoot one. :)
I'm not saying it's better than either of those rifles just that it's a lot better and more innovative than many give it credit for.
Here's a good vid on the SVT-40:
https://youtu.be/SBv7a17ex0E
>>34120661
You can get a Russian capture for around $600
>>34120559
What's the functional difference between cock on open and close?
>>34120769
enfields are the only cock on close guns
it means you face resistance when you finish pushing the bolt forward, but the bolt tends to 'open' itself once you cam the lever up, vs regular action inverse.
>>34120750
Well I will say it then. The SVT is better than the Garand.
>>34120803
>Only cock on close gun
What?
>>34120803
>>34120818
SpanishM1916.jpg
>>34120769
Cock on close offers less resistance to the initial turn of the bolt, but more resistance to the chambering of a round. Since more force is usually exerted on closing than opening anyway cock on close is a little faster.
However cock on open can usually be recocked by just turning the bolt, then turning it back, while cock on close you need to either pull the bolt back far enough to actuate the cocking mechanism, or pull the cocking mechanism back by hand.
>>34120750
I would rather have a Garand than an SVT, but I'd LOVE to have (and WILL eventually have) an SVT.
>>34120769
In the end, I think it's really about what action you feel most comfortable with. I personally like cock on open as cock on close seems awkward to me, but again, personal preference.
>>34120803
My 1895 Chilean is cock on close you newfag.
I finally had some time and a nice enough day to finally take a nice picture of my Mosin. It has that special bond as my first milsurp my dad got me for $99.
>>34120855
at leaston my 1917 enfield, you are false about needing to 'pull the bolt back' to engage the cocking mechanism. opening the bolt neccasarily pushes it back under tension to the engaging point so you can cam it back down again by pushing
>>34120540
Okay sights, decent shooting, expensive ammo. Otherwise, they are good enough guns.
Boys, is there any significant difference in the hardwood and laminate SKS stocks? I have a 51 Tula in her original laminate one, but I like the idea of a hardwood stock, and don't know if they're weaker or not.
>>34120513
Is this where fellow poorfags hang? I got a question that I'd like to get other anons opinions on.
Good a place as any. Got a thread going but Noone cares.
Impulse buy. Today. Feels good
Someone say something about Mausers?
Too bad I need a new stock.
>>34121502
>>34121517
>>34121443
Nah. Poorfags go to Taurus threads.
>>34120513
Sup dudes, I bought this M98/48 at a pawn shop last week for $247, and I was curious about some of the markings on the rifle. I'll post some pictures in a minute, but the one im most curious about is a stamp on the ball of the bolt handle. The stamp is of what looks like a sun with rays radiating out from a central circle. It's only partial, with half of the rays seemingly rubbed off by wear
>>34121443
There's definitely poorfags around, so ask away, but there's a fair number of reasonably monied peoples about too.
>>34121360
IIRC the laminate are technically stronger and weigh slightly more. I'd check yooper johns sks page for a little more info
>>34121663
Ok, just wanted at least one person to respond in a slightly positive manner before I asked. Already posted it in the new /AKG/ thread but I'll summarize it.
Should I buy a used SLR 107FR or a WASR/Finnish M39? I got a hard on for folding stocks so that'd be a thing I'd have to get for the WASR but by then I'll be a hundred or two from an SLR depending on the deal. I also am keeping in mind the rising prices of these Finnish mosin nagants. I currently am a dirty no-guns.
>>34121708
I have both an SLR and M39. Get the SLR.
>>34121727
That's enough of an answer for me. Still planning on getting that M39 down the line though. Think you can post a picture of yours? How's it shoot and where'd ya acquire it from? I am guessing from Classic Firearms.
>>34121708
M39s will probably never go down in price. I would get the M39 and then look for a used SLR to make up the difference.
>>34121708
>all this slavshit
get an AR
>>34121755
Give me a minute to take picture. No I got from the person that sold to Classic firearms, It was a women by the name of Pat and she gave 100% accurate description with multiple pictures. It's the most accurate rifle I own and I say that with full confidence. If you're really itching for some milsurp you can't really go wrong with the M39, I just find the SLR more practical.
>>34121708
get the m39 because old milsurp is c00l
>>34121810
thats a beautiful m39 post more
>>34121782

>>34121708
I'd buy the M39 and wait for the next shipment of 107s to hit the shelves and drive down prices a little
>>34121838
2/2
It's a 1942 Sako built on imperial izhevsk, it has a war time stock, bayonet rings, as well as pitting that looks like someone bled on the rifle magazine well and part of the receiver
>>34121759
Yeah, that is a concern for me but not a big one. I've got a tab on a great deal on a used SLR but some of these guys take too long to respond and that isn't even including the chance that they won't even ship to a different state (IA).
>>34121782
Thank you and sounds like she was great to do business with. The itch I've gotten is 50% long range shooting and 50% russian military surplus that I have an interest in. The SLR does take the cake though because I want a cheaper round and I just fucking love folding stocks for some odd reason.
>>34121838
Thanks again for posting the pictures.
>>34121768
Not really interested in ARs besides Vietnam era style ones. More interested in m14 or Garand rifles as far as American Military arms goes.
>>34121855
Completely forgot that they will have a new shipment since I was originally inclined on getting the 104fr instead. God damn, the waiting game can be too much and that is probably why I am poor right now.

>>34121888
She was and it's my second M39 I got from her. The first was a 95%+ VKT I got for like 299 or so. I ended up selling that one though. I want to scope the M39 because of how accurate it is but I don't want to ruin it so I'll probably get another one to bubba. You really can't go wrong with either but you have to consider that M39s aren't really made like the SLR is. I love my SLR too though.
>>34121929
Super glad you mentioned scopes because that is something I know I will eventually want to do to the rifle. How would one go about adding a scope mount on such a rifle without using a different stock or severely changing the rifle?
>>34120803
Wat
>>34121969
They make rails that you remove the rear sight and you can mount a scope there.
>>34120513

>>34120513
Got a 96/11 to go with my K11 and K31. More recently got a sling and cap that were missing for the 96/11.
Even more recently ordered pic related. Some parts store is selling trainer stripper clips loaded with 6 inert brass rounds each for a decent price.
As far as I know the training clips will handle normal ammunition just fine.
>>34121987
Yeah, I've seen those but desu they look ugly. Would rather not try scoping it if that is the only option available but that would be something I'd have to keep in mind since I would like to shoot farther to continue my interest and improvement in long range shooting.
>>34122018
For long range its definitely doable but your eyes will probably not be so good as a scope. I would get the M39 for fun and long range you can always get a cheap savage which will come with a scope.
worth 700 tho...
>>34122040

>>34122098
I paid less than they are currently going for. and I needed the parts because the gun wasn't functional when I bought it. I priced out the cost for what I needed to buy piece-meal, and just decided to get the armorers kit. It was a great decision.
OP here. Just remembered something I was gonna add to the post. One of the guys working there asked me where I got the Type 99, he mentioned that when he was younger (he's a white hair) his dad died and left one of those in his closet. The guy, being young and dumb, took it and chopped it up to make a sporter. He knows he dun goofed and regrets it.

Portions of the external receiver forward of the trunnion are also milsurp. They are rebuilt from cut receivers. Mine has some pretty nasty weld lines where they welded together the old and new bits.

>>34120750
I own an SVT, Garand, and G43 and the Gewehr is honestly the nicest handling softest shooting of the three. They can just be really prone to parts breakage so they dont make for a great combat rifle.
>>34123610
If you use the adjustable gas plug for the Garand you can make them a lot softer shooting. As made they are over-gassed (by design) so turning the gas down a bit helps.

Any other Enfield fags here? Need some help with my No1 Mk3.
The ejection is really weak -- instead of kicking cases out, they just kind of fall out of the gun. I just tried replacing the extractor spring to see if it'd make any difference, to no avail. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem?
Also wondering where to get decent forends in Canada. Everywhere is ships to US only or is always out of stock.

New stocks from wood of client's choice, or laminated using modern glues, can even come pre-chopped for fudds, checkering, or unworked so you can apply stains or poly coatings as you like, new barrels that can be chrome lined for better rust resistance and longevity, it seems like such an obvious thing to invest and manufacture but everywhere you look it's all people restoring old stocks, counterboring, trying to pick the best from the (heh) stock of old milsurp. It's not like the blueprints and specifications for making them are lost, or illegal to make is it?
Besides, markings are usually on the receiver, so it's not like you're losing anything "historical and irreplaceable" either, just the parts that go through the most wear and tear. I mean, think about it: for "modern" rifles, it's acceptable to replace parts, I don't imagine people 60 years from now will be counterboring grandpa's AR-15
>>34130827
Because collectors want original stuff and milsurp is a collectors market.
>>34130775
Just as good, but more expensive.
>>34130674

>>34130866
>>34130827
And for the record, people so make replacement stocks for the more common milsurp. They're expensive though and won't save you money that you could use to just buy a nice rifle in the first place.
>>34130866
I'd like a new 7.62 barrel for my K98k if it wouldn't be prohibitively expensive to reblue, remount sights, etc.
Wouldn't be worth it.

>>34131081
Not easy to find one AND have the money at the same time. And I worry about the startup cost of reloading equipment.
Visited a milsurp-centric LGS today (to buy an Arisaka). Pic related was there - never let anyone tell you there's no such thing as cheap milsurp out there anymore. Sure, the stock is broken, but it was sporterized and you'd have to replace it anyhow, and there's nothing wrong with the rest of it mechanically.
This, on the other hand, is a fucking abomination. For a couple of muh ounces, someone chopped the barrel on this Enfield... an absolute tragedy.

When you buy a collectable you want things ORIGINAL. You also have the same problem as to the question of "Why don't they make reproduction guns:" because it costs more than an original would cost.
Plus, you can't replicate 100 years of patina. That's how this stock has such a lovely reddish color. The linseed oil has oxidized for over a century.

Checking headspace is mostly useless. Read Hatcher's Notebook on the subject. Furthermore, almost all of the milsurp calibers specifications have been messed with thanks to SAAMI. Good luck finding one that means jack shit. For instance, the maximum allowed headspace for .303 on SAAMI guages is 4 thousands under what the MOD max.
And as I said GUNBOARDS.
>>34120513
Is $250 a good price for this SMLE No. 1 Mk III*? I haven't checked headspace or rifling condition yet. The only thing that I find odd are these serial numbers Xed out, what's up with that?
Gun shop owner believes the rifle may be Australian.
>>34132916

$250 for an Enfield is great, as long as the bore/headspace are good, and as long as the stock hasn't been buttfucked (sporterized).

Funny, the first thread basically says we don't know what gauge they used so checking one is pointless.
http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?240970-ishapore-2a-7-62-headspace-issue
Checking headspace isn't really safety check. Firing the gun once will tell you 1000 times more information than a $20 gauge will. Yes, there are those people out there that seem to trust that $20 piece of steel, but won't trust those that put the rifles together for a living. And it's not like excessive headspace will make a rifle explode. Hatcher did a test on this.

You should read the threat closer.
>Ok. Again. You do what you want. "even if it "isn't a safety issue" I don't feel like fucking up something I bought.
More people have fucked up guns they bought by checking headspace. They buy this perfect example, all matching, including the bolt. Then they check it with a SAAMI headspace guage and lo and behold they find that the headspace is too excessive so they throw away the original matching bolt for some mismatched one.
Again, read Hatcher's Notebook. He has a whole chapter in headspace and why it really doesn't matter. He kept reaming a chamber out on a M1917 someone returned because it had "bad headspace" when it in fact didn't just the idiot didn't know how to use the gauge right. Anyways, he never got that gun to blow up.
The pic you posted clearly wasn't a problem from headspace.
>>34134171
No, they're more expensive than pretty much any other Mauser except for '03 Springfields though.
>>34135234
I would buy it. If you're buying local I would ask for some sort of assurance that it works right, like meeting at a local range to put a magazine downrange beforehand. Otherwise I'd maybe use that as a bargaining point to drop the price a little more, put the screws to them.

First off. I wouldn't have bought the rifle if I thought it was bad. However from my personal experiences with Indians, and Indians approach to mechanical engineering projects is where my opinion comes from. Also you are aware these are the same people who made the INSAS rifle right? I said some consistency issues, not shit.
>You should read the threat closer.
Yes. I have read that and four other forums on these rifles all saying similar and contradicting things. So one forum doesn't have an edge there.
>You should read the threat closer.
Again. Who says I would be throwing away parts? Also yes you are suppose to check with a 7.62 NATO set and not a SAAMI.
Funny because its what I got when Iooked up "headspace for rifle".
>>34137074
>First off. I wouldn't have bought the rifle if I thought it was bad. However from my personal experiences with Indians, and Indians approach to mechanical engineering projects is where my opinion comes from.

And? A totally different gun. Meaningless.
>Yes. I have read that and four other forums on these rifles all saying similar and contradicting things. So one forum doesn't have an edge there.
That thread has actually armorers who worked on Enfields in the British military. They know their stuff.
>Again. Who says I would be throwing away parts? Also yes you are suppose to check with a 7.62 NATO set and not a SAAMI.
If you actually read the thread you would understand why even that is useless. There are many different 7.62NATO headspace gauges even for different rifles the same country uses. No one knows what the Indians used.
>Funny because its what I got when Iooked up "headspace for rifle".
Improper headspace is always attributed for rifles blowing up, or really any sort of gun malfunction. That picture, like all others are taken out of context. The headspace of a bolt action rifle isn't going to get so out of whack to make a gun blow up, period. The barrel will be worn out long before that.
Furthermore, headspace is as much dependent on the ammunition.
Just got my first Milsurp, a Steyr M95

>In other words, ignorance.
Yea I guess my experience working with Tata Motors engineers is a pointless one. Good point.
>And? A totally different gun. Meaningless.
Yes. It was something they attempted to build on their own and anyone who has a chance within the Indian military uses anything other than that rifle. Nepalese troops were having catastrophic failures with these rifles. Now. For the 2A and 2A1 redesigned the extractor, the bolt and the barrel. Two of which directly deal with headspacing. Forgive me for being cautious with all the other information I have said.
Finally I have said countless times. You do as you wish. I will still check it.
>>34137312
Damn that is faint. Well still looks good anyways. Is it a carbine or long rifle?
>>34137317
>Now. For the 2A and 2A1 redesigned the extractor, the bolt and the barrel. Two of which directly deal with headspacing. Forgive me for being cautious with all the other information I have said.
There comes a point where you become over cautious. If there EVER was a problem with these rifles you would hear about it as there are thousands in this country and being in 7.62 they are being shot more regularly than your typical milsurp. The chances of you having a car wreck and being killed or injured going to the range is far, far, far, far, far more likely than your gun doing that to you at the range.
It's funny how you'll trust a $20 piece of steel (which most likely tell you absolutely nothing of value), but won't trust actual armorers that put the rifles together for a living. And again, firing the gun once and checking the brass will tell you far more about the safety of the gun than that $20 gauge ever will.
