I'm incredibly late to the game, but I'm /finally/ in a CMP affiliate and ready to buy an M1 Garand. There are two rifles that are in my price range, and one that is a bit of a stretch.

M1D Rack Grade - $935
M1D Field Grade - $1235 (this is a stretch on my budget)
M1 CMP Special Field Grade - $830 (description says may have receiver pitting above the wood line)

The M1Ds do not come with any of the accessories other than a sling, so it's basically a regular M1 that can (once I save enough money) become an actual M1D.

I'm looking for it to be a shooter more than anything else. The pitting on the receiver is the only thing pushing me away from the Special Field. Would the pitting have any safety issues?

Help me out, /k/ommandos. Anyone have any of these CMP rifles?

Pic - Can we go back to these prices?

Shameful self-bump. Some guidance is needed here.

Get the field grade m1d.in the long run the value will only go up on garands, milsurps in general,so get the best you can get your hands on. And if you plan on converting it to a real m1d sniper rifle, dont put repro crap on it.

I suppose I could eat Ramen for a while...
I wouldn't out Repro on it. I'm not a barbarian.

Is the 300 price jump worth it?

Pitting is no big deal, the receivers are very robust, so it's more cosmetic than anything. I'd definitely go for a service grade. If you want a good shooter this is your best choice. I bought a service grade Springfield back in 2007, I almost couldn't believe how nice it was, late production, April of 1955, original barrel with virtually no wear, nice original stock. Not all original, some HRA parts mixed in, but very nice overall. And I hate to rub it in, but it was $622 shipped at that point.

I'd jump on a service grade if they were available. They're out of them, which is a shame.

Dude, I bought a m1 two summers ago...price was 730 OTD for a special grade. But if you can, I'd HONESTLY GO THERE to the store. Very very wide variety of what you will get if you order online. Lots of variation in the grades. Some rack grades were almost special grade and looked like they could be in a movie while others had (literally) paint on the stocks and been driven over. Plus throats readings vary widely too. I'd recommend go there two one of the stores if at all possibly. For me it was a 7 hour round trip but totally worth it. Get there an hour before it opens too otherwise everything will be sold within 30 mins. I went on a Saturday.

Well, I guess there is the Service Grade M1D for $1500. Would it be worth eating that price jump?

Edit: I got service grade not special

I just looked at drive times to the stores. Ten hours to each of them.

>>34117130
I would probably just not get the rack grade...

I wasn't really planning on it.

No. Dry beans, brown rice, carrots, Peas, broccoli

That actually might be more flavorful.

How do I get into CMP?

Be a US citizen, able to legally purchase a firearm, with a "proof of marksmanship", and be a member of a CMP Affiliate club or program.

The CMP will help you with finding the club for you, and if you have a CPL/CCW they accept that as your proof of marksmanship.
>>
>>34118452
So, I'd have to be 21 then? Damn, looks like it's back to boring rifles for me then.
>>
>>34118481
You have to be 18. There are other ways of proving marksmanship, it's on their website. I'll find the link...
>>

I can't post the link, the spam filter keeps catching it. Hit up Google and search CMP Eligibility Requirements
