Bitch, please.

It's not the stress, it's how you pronounce the -bine.
It's either -byen (I wish I could just use IPA for this) or -bean

I agree, the proper way to pronounce "Canik" is "trash."

It's NOT "man licker"
>>

America - LU-tenant

Britain and everywhere affected by the Queen's English - LEF-tenant
>>
>>34114245
We adopted the French word during the revolution to spite the British and pronounce it in as if it were intended to be an english word.

Modern british accents didn't even exist until there was a movement in the 1860's to become more posh on that shitty little island. Americans literally speak a better and more legitimate english than the english do.
>>
>>34112201
I don't know where I stand with Canik. If I use the proper way, people will not know what I'm referring to, but if I say "Kanik", I feel like a fucking retard.

Any possible pronunciation of HK's "Koch."

It isn't "Kahtch" like "crotch."
It isn't "Coke" like the drink.
It isn't "Cock."
It isn't "Kahhhhhhkkkhkhkh" like you're clearing your throat.
It isn't "Kagh" like Klingon-live-worms "Gagh."

Unless you're German, you should just probably say "HK" or "H and K." Like Germans are physically incapable of saying the word "squirrel," and so should avoid it.

And you Brits add a new level of fuckery to even "HK" by saying "Haitch."
>>

OP meant car-bye-n, what the other guy spelt as car-bine. Both rhyme with pine or mine.

As opposed to car-bean, rhyming with mean or lean.

He didn't mean Car-be-yen, rhyming with muy bien
>>
>>34120709
the a in man is pronounced more like a soft o
it's not that easy, but for the sake of argument, let's just say it's pronounced like mon
hold your mouth in the shape of a soft a and try to say soft o
that would be a close approximation
oh god, the licher part
depends on which german accent
the i sounds more like a long e or a soft i
let's just use lisher
leesher is closer for other regions
oh god, the other german rule on ch
with more exceptions than rules
here it goes
hiss like a snake but with your teeth about a finger width away and try to say church
if the second ch came out kind of s sounding, you got it right
mon-lisch-er
now try to say it stupid fast as one syllable or you'll sound like a tourist
german is easy once you get the hang of it, honestly it is
>>
>>34112266
>acrosst

What? I can't even tell what word that would be
>>
>>34125596
haha i saw the ss and replaced it with scharfes S, ß
acroßt
>>
>>34125526
What the fuck? You're way over complicating this

The a is like in "ball," and the ch is like halfway between the Arabic kh and an English h. German-American here. Don't confuse the poor kid.
>>
>>34125625
>halfway between the Arabic kh and an English h
Merkel's Germany is halfway between Arabic and English.
Been all over Germany, Austria, Switzerland
I can fake a Bavarian, Hessen, Frankfurt, Hamburg accent with the best of them.
The a is certainly NOT like the a in ball unless you are holding your lips in the shape of a soft o and standing in certain states within Germany.
You are the confused poor kid.
German here.
"German-American" pshaw
>>
>>34125655

Not a pronunciation issue, but I've always had my balls in a twist when someone calls a gun a "weapon platform" or "system".
I mean, I don't suppose they're in the wrong, I just feel like it's trying too fockin hard. I don't guess chassis works.
>>
>>34119875
It's not pronounced "coke"

T. German
>>
>>34127001
>Modular System Weapon Chassis Platform
>>
>>34127102
does it rhyme with "doch"?
>>
>>34127001
For me it depends. For example, the M110 is a platform to build a weapons system off of using magnified optics, NV, range finder, IR laser, etc. However the guys calling their AR a platform or system, are usually using it wrong and just being try hards when they just have a rifle with a red dot on it.
>>
>>34114245
lieutenant.

consider the word with premodern orthography - lievtenant.

it makes sense, even if it's fucking stupid.
>>
>>34112686
wouldn't that depend on your local dialect, though?

I've seen ch pronounced hard and soft just like -ig in Ludwig. is it ludwish or ludwick?
>>
>>34119875
Then they're wrong.
>>34127166
Exactly.
It also rhymes with "Loch".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRiWBRS3OC8
>>
>>34127250
so indeed it's heckler und cock.
>>
>>34119875
>>34119909
Not quite - but fair enough. It says "The English pronunciation is pronounced 'coke.'"

This is a reasonable cop-out to get us close enough so that people quit saying "katch." It's still not the way it's pronounced, but I'm splitting hairs. Nobody in the US calls a VW a "FolksVagen" even though that would be the correct pronunciation in its original German.

Just like the Transylvanian pronunciation for "blood" is "blaaht" and the Russian pronunciation for "victory" is "weektory" and the Jamaican pronunciation for "bacon" is the same as the British pronunciation of "beer can."

So, if HK is good with us calling it "coke" that's good enough for me. For that matter, I've always thought it pretty stupid when people in the media go into a sudden Spaniard fit when pronouncing proper names or Spanish words:

Foreigners can't pronounce the "ch" sound. Listen to this brave scotsman who belongs to probably the one culture that can.
>>34127250
Turks and assorted shitskins in germany usually make "sh" out of it. Don't do that. Make it a k if you can't do the ch sound.

>>34127204
Yes it does. Ludwig is something like "ludwick" for you anglos (in standard german) but it might be a ludwich or ludwish in some dialects.

As for the mannlicher part:
ch is spoken as "k" mostly at the start of a sentence, in loan words, before s, or in some north german dialects. Mannlicher is an austrian name and quite definitely pronounced with the "ch" sound in austrian dialect. Listen here:

Leftenant literally means nothing, it's a made up word.
Lieutenant in french breaks down to lieu-tenant, which translates to leader/holder of the locality/area/zone. It's based on words that actual relate to the position.

I learned how to read and pronounce german from an old neighbor that was in the Hitler Youth. He was from some port city in the northwest and they're dialect pronounced the "ch" sound as a "sh" sort of sound that's hard to describe in the English language. Rammstein uses the dialect in quite a bit of music because it's easier to project the sounds.

Why do people always overcomplicate the soft ch?
Just make a "sh" sound, but while making it, move your tongue to the top of your mouth while still making the "sh" sound.
Congrats, you can now say ich, dich, mich, or in this case, Mannlicher.
