Discuss rifles, optics, calibers, and hand loading for precision shooting.
I'm currently teetering between a Remington 700 Police and the Savage 10 BA Stealth (both in 308). I got to hold the savage a while back and liked it, but I haven't shot one. I did shoot the 700 Police, however, and put 5 shots almost touching on a 1" orange paster at 200 yards. It's gonna be a while till I buy a new rifle, so what else should I be looking at in the sub $1200 range?
The loads I grouped with were Hornady 168gn match BTJHP's in 2013 Lake City brass backed by 42 grains of IMR 4064 and a CCI No. 200 Large Rifle primer.

How do I get better at zeroing shit? I'm awful with magnified optics.

first thing is to make sure your action (rifle:stock), base, rings, and scope screws are all properly torqued (typically 45,18,13,13 inlbs). Get one of those hex torque wrenches, once you've gone out to the range/field and you realize your shit isn't properly torqued, you'll wish you had one. Put a target at 25 yds, pull the bolt, and look through the scope and the barrel at the center of the target and line them up by adjusting the scope. Take a shot and adjust so it's on target, rinse, lather, repeat. Put the target at 100yds and you're probably going to be 3-4" high, so adjust again. You're aiming the crosshair at the center of the target and adjusting the bullet impact by moving the turrets (up/down, left/right), you're not moving the crosshairs (that's actually bullshit, but it's how the turrets are marked).
I dunno if that's how you should do it, but it's how I've learned to do it.

Better check wield and consistent sight picture would be my first guess, setting up your optics eye relief to fit you is important.
Alt, use a better rest and get consistent with it.
What rear rest bag should I get? I've made my own but they're meh so I'd rather just buy one. Looking on midway at the moment.

Have you tried Wool socks and rice?

It seems I still have much to learn. Thanks for the pointers.
One of these days I should just take a class.
How the hell do people shoot with two eyes open, iron sights or optics?
>>34113397
Both are doable, but you will have to train to do it. It's a focus thing, a good way to start is using an eye patch with both eyes open, the a single sun glasses lens.
>>34113397
I started out by squinting my non-dominant eye but not fully closing it when I acquired a sight picture and then slowly opening it fully while still focusing on the front sight. I would focus on a spot or target on the wall and bring the sights up to that spot.
Eventually it become almost second nature

another anon here
got a retards guide for that stuff? Thinking of picking up a cheapo to try.
>>34113567
iirc Rex talks about it in Sniper 101 somewhere. you should be able t google "consistent cheek wild " and sight picture and get some pointers-- as well as to how to set up your optics.

Really wanted to get into long range shooting, but my mechanics right now are just starting out. Hard for me to hit 100 with my garand's irons.
>>34113397
I don't know, I can't do it either. I can't focus on the target with both eyes open, and keeping one eye closed gets painful after a time. I can only do it with red dots.
>>34113619
I'll give a google, thanks mate.
always wanted to graduate from irons anyway
Am I the only one that can't stand the Rex stuff? There's a lot of focus on cartridges, scopes, and brands that are outdated these days. Not to mention some of the physics he talks about is flat out wrong. It could be made into a fairly concise 30 minute video that still provides a fairly comprehensive summary for people.
>>34113929
I agree, he talks to much. If he reviewed lived in Utah he'd be Nutn 2.0.

>Not to mention some of the physics he talks about is flat out wrong.
Could you give an example? I haven't seen all his video, but haven't found something wrong with his stuff yet.

Rifle/barrel harmonics.
