>German
>Military
HAHAHAhahaha.
Haha.

Alright guys listen, I know you don't like /pol/, but here's the facts:

>The german populace and the politicians do not see the need for a better army.
Which is strictly speaking true. It's unlikely russia will attack; it's even more unlikely they will attack germany. The negligible risk that russia will take the baltics is just that - negligible. We're much better off spending that money on appeasing the refugees and maybe keeping the eurozone together for a little bit longer.

>They also wouldn't recognize a good army if they saw one
Few of the active politicians were even in the army. They don't understand the actual requirements, or the many soft factors that make an army a capable fighting force. Their idea of improving it would be too buy more tanks and create more job positions. Which won't help, because

>They wouldn't get the manpower even if they paid better
Germans are, by and large, pacifists; the more educated they are the more so. They are also by and large not inclined to join an army with all the bullshit that comes with it (and the german army is rich with bullshit right now).
We don't have a jobless underclass that could make the grunts because these are mostly either too retarded even for the army or already have jobs. We don't have people that would join to pay for college and raise the average intelligence in the army because college is free. We don't have clever people (=people with options) that would become officers out of patriotism because people are not patriotic any more and those that really are might wonder wether the bundeswehr would be the place to express that.
The only (potential) way out of that one would be the reintroduction of the draft, which... well, see point 1.

Apply that to the eurozone and then wonder why they don't want to instantly make their defense budget over the 2%

The only real reason they might do it is if NATO dissolves and then find themselves in having to compensate for all the neat things NATO gave to the stability of the world.

Otherwise, the irrational desition is increasing defense bucket if you do not intend to give it a heavy use.

Some of the T-72s and aircraft could be kept as reserve for a little bit. Not the best tanks or planes in the world but all the supplies and men were there to keep them running for a bit. Bolsters numbers and provides training until domestically built stuff exists in sufficient numbers.
Plus the Eastern Germans were working on an AK derivative that could be produced in 5.56 NATO but it was cancelled (along with the G11) in favor of the G36. Which has since had problems.

If it wasn't enough hard already to uplift a nation that was economically decades behind the absorbing one, to keep an army that:

>Was based around the idea of tight military structures and numbers
>Would require spare parts from Russia
>Was one of the reasons the wall fell in the first place

They had to do it, not even militarily made sense since the money you could get from the scrapts could be even reinverted into your own functioning army(which didn't happen, just to point out that even getting a small fraction of worth was a better idea), socially would have meant that people would still see AK and t-72 around with all the shitfest implied, politically NATO would have raised many questions about this desition(Poland is the exception, Poland didn't had the money nor a huge reserve of western equipment already there)

They kept the Mi helicopters because they worked and were very versatile and they threw everything into the trash since it simply would have been a big annoyance and there were other priorities.

Also, the threat of the big Russian bear was in all time low, reducing defense budgets was the logical next step.

Would anyone currently in the Bundeswehr like to comment where the difference between infantry Feldwebel and Officers is when it comes to combat?

I have a bachelor which makes Officer sensible but at the same time I am worried I will end up behind a desk when all I want is to be at the front fighting (if that doesn't sound too edgy).

Are officers (Zugführer perhaps) directly involved in the fighting? Do they fire their weapon or just delegate?

Any advice / stories?

The Russian gear was pretty garbage. The only thing they had that was more advanced than WG tech was the R-73. Keeping the gear for any period of time would have meant big standardization problems, selling it was the right decision. And the G36 doesn't have problems. And G11 was a program with plenty of issues that was never considered to be a standard service rifle, that's what the G41 was for, also canceled by reunification.

>WWI was the fault of the Entente for backing Serbian terrorists who had just murdered the Kaiser's cousin in the middle of the street.

Not the gear that's the worst part, it's their current politial leadership being bugfuck insane.

- They have spent the last couple years basically gutting their own command staff and replacing them with political stooges, which amongst other things has caused more than a third of their special forces operators to quit the army in disgust because of just how utterly useless their new CO was. Like, we're literally talking about throwing out people with decades of training and experience and full NATO clearances etc. for guys who sometimes haven't evne received clearance to access classified information by the Poles' own intelligence service.

- They've slashed maintenace and training budgets to the bone, and cancelled a large number of equipment contracts. Which for example means polish airmobile units have not even enough helis to provide effective SAR in the Baltics anymore, and their most modern air defense weapons are goddamn upgraded S-125 NEWAs. (Last time they actually tried launching one of those antiques in a training exercise, it immediately turned around and hit the ground twenty feet away from the launcher; only reason there were no deaths was because it carried a dummy warhead.) But hey, it's not all bad. They got a big number of israeli Spike ATGMs... except nobody but special forces and a few airborne units are actually educated in how to use them, and nobody is allowed to train with them because that'd be too expensive.

Cont.
>>
>>34107898
first off, those fucks need to shave.
>>
>>34109062
Cont.

- They've just created a fifth branch of the armed forces (besides air, land, sea and special fores), the Territorial Defence Force. These are made up of reservists with 20 days of training/year in a weekend system. Which basically boils down to them getting a neat uniform and learning how to look deent in a photo-shoot. They supposedly are to be the first and last line of resistance and groundwork for an insurgency to resist invasion. Everyone involved below the highest levels is basically laughing at the sheer comedy of it.

- Meanwhile, they've spent tens of millions of Euros to "strenghten the catholic foundations" of the forces, which mostly means a lot of stupid propaganda shit. This was declared the absolute priority of the defense budget by the polish MoD.

Seriously, at this point you're hard-pressed to tell wether Macierewicz (the current Minister of Defence) is a russian agent or jsut outright that delusional.

PS: It's now the official statement of the polish government that Kaczyński's plane crash in 2010 was caused by the Russians detonating a thermobaric weapon near his machine as it was coming in to land. Yeah.

Not (yet) in the Bundeswehr but I will try to answer:
>I have a bachelor which makes Officer sensible but at the same time I am worried I will end up behind a desk when all I want is to be at the front fighting (if that doesn't sound too edgy).

Officer candiates who already have a degree will use it normally only in some special MOS like the geographic or judical branch.
As regular 13-year contract officier you will practically always spend 4 years at military university and get a bachelor and amaster degree in some subject.
>Are officers (Zugführer perhaps) directly involved in the fighting? Do they fire their weapon or just delegate?

Du wirst auch kämpfen aber der Hauptfokus eines Offiziers ist die Führung seiner Soldaten und viel organisatorisches Zeug, sollte es keine technische Verwendung sein in der Abschluss nötig für den Job ist.
You will fight too, but the main point of an officier is to lead his men and deal with organisational stuff, shouldn't it be a technical MOS in which you need the degree for the job.

Well it's not like the Russian army is much better. It has few contract based special ops units, some Chechen mercs they use as cannon folder. It's ok for low intensity interventions like Syria and Ukrain but if you think that they are even building their conscript army (one year of service where only the most poor and stupid villagers are drafted and mostly don't seexa real weapon during their service) for a conventional war you are mistaken. No one outside of Asia is seriously preparing for a conventional symmetric warfare because it's not a viable scenario.

Hey danke für die ausführliche Info.

When you say pecial MOS, I am interested in applying with the target of Kommandooffizier (commando officer), and the recruitment team in Calw (KSK) said I might be able to join with a higher rank and a shorter contract time. Do you know anything that suggests this might be bullshit?

Mandate that the O&M costs for any weapons system adopted by the German military be mandatory spending rather than discretionary, so that the congress can't underfund things.

Start appointing career military men to be Minister of Defense instead of political hacks.

Ban women from every part of the service other than the medical corps.

Issue strict bans on any kind of racial, religious, or national preference in any military-related field.

Send troops into peacekeeping operations, purely so they have some experience in shitholes with people shooting at them.

Purchase F-35s and bomb the shit out of anyone and everyone who gives us problems.

Adopt the G11.

I dont't have slightest clues about KSK recruitment.

Except the German soldier wouldn't be allowed to shoot his weapon until he was shot at, or to fight at night.

The difference is that nobody expects anything from the Belgians. It's a small country whose military tradition mostly consists of being a battleground for its neighbours. Whereas Germany is the most populous country of Europe, by far the biggest economy, and has a great martial history. Today there is no doubt that the German military is well behind France & the UK in both the capability and will to fight.

From what I understand, militaries in the developed world have a very difficult time integrating women due to how easy it is for them to claim sexual harassment or discrimination if anybody in charge of them uses any kind of military discipline.

Every single vehicle, weapon, radio etc needs to be checked and approved to move from X NATO country into Y NATO country for exercises, etc.

As ridiculous as it seems, it's very possible that an entire APC can be approved for entry, but mounted weapons/machine guns aren't.

I work in the ADF and I've seen this happen a few times. It's just the way the media spins shit dude. If you're trying to paint the Bundeswehr as a shit fight, naturally you are going to report it as a case of lack of resources rather than what it actually was; a simple administrative fuck up by idiots behind desks (often civilian contractors).

The French worked with the German army too. It ended with the Taliban fighters posing for photos with FFL gear that they stripped off the corpses.

The modern German army is a shit-show. Obviously, it's not the fault of individual soldiers. Obviously, some of them are doing their best. But the big picture is extremely disheartening.

Furthermore, it's probably going to get way worse before it gets any better. As far as I know, they want to start recruiting migrants. Ethnic Germans have an average IQ of ~100. People from the Middle East have the average IQ of ~80. It's ~70 for Africa. Basically, if they do this (and the politicians are pushing hard to make it happen), their army will be literally incapable of operating like a modern Western military, because the number of utter idiots will make achieving the necessary tactical competence on a small unit scale impossible.
