And little wheels for the ones designed to operate specifically in urban areas.
>>
Treads for traversing tough terrain
Legs for climbing uneven terrain
Wheels for driving down roads
There is no best answer, they each have their place

what about one enormous wheel, like a mile in diameter. it will roll over literally anything

probably the ones that rely on lighter tanks like japan, thailand and indonesia, due to the terrain
>>
>>34106745

Japan has the worst possible terrain for legged vehicles. There's a reason they take lighter tanks and thats because of bridges and ease of transportation.

Same as why Russia picked lighter tanks instead of matching parity with the West in terms of size despite having tech parity till the 90s.

Walking tanks would be fucking awful at moving across bridges, even if they could run at 80km/h.

The only mechs that anyone will EVER deploy will at best be exoskeletons that are designed to be 12.7mm resistant and used as terrain based hunter/killers that deploy heavy ATGMs and possibly autocannon round based rifles/vehicle mounted grenade launchers.

But there's no reason to do so when drones function just fine so unless you get some gundam level bullshit where the new reactors used basically just block/absorb all transmissions and distort visual range/electronics then you are living a pipe dream.

Legs are slow, are more easily damaged, and can't tackle the same range of terrain that treads can. They are inferior in every respect.

If you blow a tank track, it is forced to roll around in circles until somebody tows it away.

If you damage a leg it can still limp around on that jammed-up leg. If you completely blow off a leg, it still has another leg and two arms. If you blow off both legs it still has two arms. If you blow off one arm it still has the other arm. If you completely amputate every single limb on a humanoid walker vehicle, it might still be able to wiggle around if it has a proper articulated waist, maybe wiggle enough to aim a torso or head mounted weapon at you.

The AMPs in the movie were converted civilian warehouse loaders. The actual military probably has armored ones without the silly giant canopy.

At that moment of damage it does not matter how easy or difficult it is to repair. One is a pillbox (ie ded) and one can still crawl pretty quickly to cover.

It also depends on the propulsion system used.
Gear transmission? The absolute worst you could use for a walker, and it would require a lot of deeply integrated parts to be replaced if they got bent from the impact force.
Electric motor actuators? Depending on the modularity of the parts, you might be able to get away with replacing only the destroyed joints or bones.
Artificial muscles? Lmao field repairs could be done by the mech itself, no engineer on foot required. Detach muscles and replace limbs with spare ones. The salvage work on the broken parts can be done off the field behind friendly lines, so the actual downtime of the unit is minimal.

>>34115831

You guys are fucking retarded if you can't figure this one out. Like, genuinely clinically retarded. Or maybe you just have no clue whatsoever how anything is built, and think that life is like your sci-fi cartoons.

If you can build a tiny inexhaustible power source that lets you jump over buildings and throw cars with your bare hands, you can also put that same power source into a tank and give it a 200,000 mile range with a top speed of 90 mph whilst powering all the goodies you want (like lasers and railgun). And that's JUST the power source that we're talking about here.
>>
>>34115908
And that super-tank still can't go into buildings or forests, retard.

We didn't get rid of infantry when we invented tanks did we?
>>
>>34115908
>If you can build a tiny inexhaustible power source that lets you jump ove-

No, the power source does not do that.

It feed the artificial muscles of the nanosuit to amplify these actions these muscles are extremely strong, very flexible and unbelievably lightweight as well as power efficient.

So again : why would a tank need artificial muscles that can stop projectiles ?

You can make your tank go as fast as you want; it can and will get stuck in a hole that a few people with shovels can dig. The principle of its propulsion system has inherent weaknesses that can only be compensated for by adding more shit into the equation, more completely separate support systems, more weight.
>>
>>34115986
Electric and low speed machinery can be pretty quiet. But 100% guarantee that thing is tethered and its in a very clean environment, so that might not be the case if it ever goes into the field.

Though I'm not sure what you'd use an $8.5 million dollar mech for...

you are fucking retarded, dude. like beaten in the head as a child every single day retarded. like the dog uses you as a fucktoy retarded.

those muscles (which do not exist btw) can't do anything without the power source, which is apparently infinite and incredibly small. if you can't understand how an infinite and incredibly small power source would completely revolutionize everything (not just tanks), then you must have gotten fucked a little too hard by daddy when you were a toddler.

If artificial muscules and non-shit batteries were to be invented, would this (more specifically a smaller version of) be a viable platform?
>Fast

>Can make quick turns around corners/obstacles
Could be useful for urban warfare and to clear whole buildings, just send a fey of them and let them kill anything resembling a human while they map the place

You'll have almost the same ground pressure. You have 80% of the OAL, and because the individual tracks are smaller you can easily make them wider.

Can you make it play La Cucaracha?

Of course, strap a good Sound System and have it do Border Patrol, the Sound will attract illegals

I could be wrong, but I kinda assumed it was hydraulics due to the slight hiss you can hear when it actuates. There's also some sort of cabling going up the back sides of the limbs but those could be electrical.

I remember the movie's mech having more articulations in the hip. Sure, it will be more complicated, but it makes for a faster, smoother movement and a dam sexier walk-cycle

Gun, armor and crew layout are the problems with the Scorpion anon, not the tread pods.

Yes, lets take something simple and effective and make it needlessly complex.

>why are you so incapable of admitting that giving a tank infinite range and a high speed is an advantage?
Because it's a bad thing if you slam into a wall or tree at "high speed". Simple straight-line speed isn't everything.

You absolutely need hips in any walker design. It is critical to keeping balance and allowing the legs to move freely and effectively, even if you don't notice how much you rock your hips around when walking.

>>34116278
>what is articulation
AKA let's make it more like legs. So why not just use legs? After a certain level of articulation is added it should technically be possible for it to start walking even if that wasn't the intention.

The FP is the BP though. Legs with wheels or tracks for feet on flat ground speed and normal walking for actual difficult terrain and fine sidestepping maneuvers is the pinnacle to aim for.

And that Korean robot seems to only have two hinges in the hip to rotate the legs forward. All stabilization is done by the knees and seems like it was about to tip over at any moment.

I was impressed at how smooth and responsive the arms were, but it all came crashing down when it stared walking.

Also, how does one control the legs? An automatic walk-cycle seems right for prototyping, but that shit won't work on anything that is not flat, the pilot needs good visibility of what's under him if he wants to avoid/go over obstacles and adjust his walk for terrain.

They give you fairly good ground pressure and obstacle crossing ability, while being lighter than tires of comparable performance.
Problem is, they're more expensive, powering them is far more complicated, and they're far more maintenace intensive.

AI capable of both balancing a truly humanlike bipedal walker AND doing this while interpreting exactly what the human operator wants it to do is very difficult and still very far away. Current running quadruped robots often use a sort of gait that is more like a set of glorified wheels than actual legs; you never see them do complex and precise step management to get around obstacles and they turn in big wide arcs just like any wheeled robot. That old mulebot that makes a lot of noise and finds its way around by tippy-toeing everywhere to feel its way across terrain has more natural movements but is still highly inefficient.

Control is the biggest problem facing walker vehicles, not power generation nor materials science. The best way out is the development of neural interfaces so that pilots can control their machines directly and is technically better than any AI-based solution, but that technology is still in its infancy. Probably will be ready for prime time before robots can walk normally on their own given how slowly that tech is coming along. A combination of a no-surgery neural interface plus intelligent AI like in Battletech might be the best compromise in the future but that requires both to fully mature first.
