That's not a bad analogy. What would the queen be, in that case? SSGNs?

SSNs are the true kings of the sea, everything on the sea at war will fear that there could be one stalking them. Carriers are the kings of power projection.

Limited power projection.

The queen of the seas is the SSBN.

Able the destroy entire nations from the safety of the oceans. With little or no defense.

A US Navy supercarrier was teaching a class on Freedom of Navigation, a known imperialist concept.

”Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship AirSea Battle and accept that it is the most revolutionary doctrine military affairs has ever known, even greater than the People's War!”

At this moment, a brave, patriotic, PLAN shore battery who had conducted over 1500 test launches and understood the necessity of building new islands and fully supported all military decision made by the Politburo stood up and held up a WU-14.

”How many of these can you shoot down, gwai lo?”

The arrogant professor smirked quite Japanesely and smugly replied “All of them, you coolie peasant.”

”Wrong. Aegis has not even been tested against superior DF-21 ASBM system. The age of the carrier... is over.”

The professor was visibly shaken, and failed to acquire track or un-jam her CIWS. She withdrew from the theater broadcasting that crocodile SOS. The same SOS American spy planes broadcast over the "reckless" PLAAF pilots (who in fact were only defending their sovereign airspace) when they bravely ram invading imperialist aircraft. There is no doubt that at this point our professor, USS Gerald R. Ford, wished she had pulled herself up by her seacocks and become more than an obsolete weapons platform. She wished so much that she had a next-generation ASM to sink herself in embarrassment, but her own navy had failed to deploy one!

The Taiwanese all applauded and accepted unification under two systems that day. A panda named "Authoritarian Government" waddled into the room and sat down under the PRC flag and shed a tear on the CIWS. "The East is Red" was sung several times, and Mao himself showed up and reestablished the Middle Kingdom's natural hegemony across East Asia.

The professor lost her escorts and was mothballed the next day. She was decommissioned and sold for scrap to help service America's debt to China.8

Who gives a shit?

They can't run, they can't hide, and all it takes is one missile salvo to obliterate every useful piece of equipment on that island.

The only thing you can say about them is that they probably cost about half of what a carrier does, but I don't see that as making up for their enormous weaknesses.

Sure, It's not like you can't play with the settings to get the result to look good.
>>
>>34108356
It would take a nuke to do the kind of catastrophic damage to a carrier that would result in insta-kill with all hands lost.

If the nukes are in play, 5000 dead in a flash won't even make the news cycle. People are gonna have other concerns to occupy their attention.
>>
>>34108671
Unsinkable, immobile, and irrelevant.
>>
>>34109064

However, when you run the simulations in Super Mario Brothers, the PLAN fails to jump over the rolling barrel every time.

If you convert to Looney Tunes format, Wu Li Coyote always gets the Acme piano dropped on his head. Video games just don't work out well for the PLAN, unless they have all of the cheat codes turned on.

Nope. Behemoth is
>>
>>34106566
but an SSBN can only deliver all or nothing attacks and do nothing else
a carrier can carry out reconnaissance and deliver flexible response from a single small diameter bomb or gun run all the way up to nuclear weapons (anyone who thinks the US's we might have nukes or not on carriers means they don't have nukes is an idiot)

What is the Convention on the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone?
>>
>>34110743
Yes, irrelevant. Read Article 60. Those islands are worthless as clay, and worthless as garrisons or for force projection. They'll just serve to soak up money, people, and resources until rising sea levels render them useless as well as pointless.

I think irrelevant is an apt description.

>>
>>34112113

This is what they said about Battleships in the 40's 50's and look what happened to them
>>
>>34113064

Yes. They were killed...by carriers.
>>
>>34109417
Dont carriers carry an insane amount of flammables and explosives? Think of all the bombs, missiles, and jet fuel the strike groups need. Wouldn't one unlucky hit be enough to send a Nimitz up like the HMS Hood?
>>
>>34114069

Carriers have been hit, set on fire, etc, throughout history. If you really want to read what happens when a carrier takes a hit, it's only a google search away.
>>
>>34114101
But has there ever been a penetrating hit to one of the magazines? Like happened with the Hood?

I can't find a source saying how many bombs a Nimitz carries, but I saw one article discussing loading 6 million pounds of ordnance onto CVN-74. That seems like enough to insta-kill the ship.
>>
>>34114156
Modern weapons don't detonate, there are multiple separate magazines, the ships is designed with fuckloads of reserve buoyancy etc. The Forestal was the last time a bomb cooking off will damage an aircraft carrier.
>>
>>34110548
Well, if you really have to, SSBNs can still use the SLBM to perform reconnaissance by fire.

It also has towed array, ESM masts, ability to deploy divers for recon, special forces. To name a few.
>>
>>34114069
> Wouldn't one unlucky hit be enough to send a Nimitz up like the HMS Hood?

No. Magazines are designed to prevent sympathetic explosions. We've learned a thing or two since the days of the Hood.

Jet fuel is nowhere near as flammable as avgas. Fuelling systems are designed specifically to mitigate the effects of battle damage. It's been like that since WW2, which is just 1 of the reasons why our carriers don't burn like a shingle factory.
>>
>>34114156

The US is world-leading in insensitive munitions, and incidents like the Forrestal fire, which was only as bad as it was because of bad-practice in the use of old bombs (both using sensitive filler, and having deteriorated), have only sharpened the focus on risk avoidance and damage control.
>>
>>34114156

Battle groups are the king of the Sea, a single ship is a easy prey even to Somali Pirates.
>>
>>34106477

So? China killed millions of them willingly just to modernize, making it clear that it doesn't really care if it loses a few. What blowing up the dam shows is that the Chinese government is not in control when push comes to shove, which would force it to either reorganize to not suffer situations where such events would occur in the future, or lose and be replaced Taiwan/Hong Kong's own.

The freaking out over civilian losses is largely a western thing.
