Signs that it's been to another country after its German service (Turkey, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Spain, etc.) will determine how much you should pay. They have a crazy number of serial'ed parts, so the more of those that are matching the better. Check that the parts have their Imperial acceptance markings (a "Crown-over-Fraktur letter") and are not M98 parts from another country. 1915–1917-dated rifles are the most common; in 1917 the Germans curtailed Gew.98 production at most state arsenals in favor of Kar.98a and machine gun production, so the 1918-dated rifles are usually from the commercial manufacturers.

I'm new to mausers - what kind of upper hand guard style is that? Are they interchangeable with the hand guards that go around the rear sight? I think the bare steel looks a lot nicer.

Okay, good to know, Thank you Anon.I'd like a German one but I've heard that the Czech made ones were made on Mauser tooling and are of the same quality, with the majority of Turkish Mausers being a little rough but still fine shooters. Is this true?

Probably wasn't a field cleaned part; only the armorer would be fiddling with it.

Curious to see if 98s and its various clones have the same design flaw. I swear the Arisakas have a longer ejector that won't line the screw hole up if its inserted backwards. Will see when i get home.

>I've heard that the Czech made ones were made on Mauser tooling and are of the same quality
Correct. After the Treaty of Versailles banned military arms production in Germany the new Czechoslovak government purchased Waffenfabrik Mauser's Gew.98 production line, along with completed rifles and existing parts stocks Mauser had. This was set up at an artillery workshop in Brno, which became the first CZ factory. 10,000 Gew.98 copies were produced by CZ and called Vz.98, then they substituted the Mauser-patent flat tangent-leaf rear sight for the German Lange sight, lengthened the handguard, and made approximately 42,000 rifles called Vz.98/22. Pic related is my Vz.98 and my Vz.98/22. Czechoslovakia sold most of their long Mausers to Turkey in 1927.
>with the majority of Turkish Mausers being a little rough but still fine shooters. Is this true?
More or less. The Turkish Mausers that are re-builds of older Ottoman-contract rifles seem to me to be a little bit rougher than the all-new production long rifles made at Kirikkale Rifle Factory from 1940-1946. All this is complicated by the fact that these rifles were used heavily for decades, and not refurbished when finally put into storage. Both my Vz.98 and Vz.98/22 are great shooters; my Turkish M98/37 rebuild is very battered and can't shoot worth a damn, but I think that's more due to its condition than its manufacture quality. It needs a stock that actually fits it properly.

that style is usually seen on the german k98s and czech ones, the handguard that goes all the way around the sight is the yugo m48s and others

It's a Chinese copy of a Gew.98, with a Mauser "Banner" logo like many Chinese-contract Mauser Standardmodells had, and the sunburst on the left of the receiver which the Chinese Nationalist-contract Kar.98ks use as a firing proof. Definitely wouldn't shoot it, but would make a neat conversation piece if it sells cheap.

You're still talking to him, lad. I wanted to see what surp handgats were in vogue right now (i.e. the current $250 fad pistol, looks like the 92S's are still around) and if anyone still has cheap Walthers in stock. The Tokarev is cool and I appreciate wanting an OGTT but for me being able to shoot it was more important.

Was assigned to the 3rd military district. Note the two sold out of service marks. It was returned to military service in WWII and later sold out of service again.
>>
>>34100189
Thats correct, I think. From what I know, it was only actually the brits who stringently upgraded their SMLEs as new models came out, whereas the colonies who recieved a couple mark 1s (I assume) largely didn't bother.

Its simply that the advancement to the mk. 3 occured so rapidly that only a couple original mk. 1s trickled out of britain (who wouldnt give colonial forces the most advanced small arm in the british arsenal before the british forces themselves were fully rearmed) into the colonies and thus colonial mk. 1s (namely Austrialian and New Zealand cavalry issue) are also impossibly hard to find.

I love this rifle too. It's all original matching, except for the replacement heavy barrel. The buttstock is also the original maple, but the forestock is the 40s coachwood. It still has it's green anti-corrosion paint that was put on in WWII. One day I'll have to get off of my ass and finally get a proper Australian mag to put on it.

That's not exactly true. The reason that Manurhin got the tooling for the P38 was because the French captured the Mauser plant during WWII and in fact kept the plant going until 1946 when they blew it up because the soviets wanted the machinery. Instead the French sent it back to France. Then Germany wanted more P38s and it was found Manurhin had the tooling so they originally made them for Germany. Manurhin was also the company that made all of Walther's PP and PPK pistols post WWII even the ones marked Walther. Ironic since the Walther ones go for more.

I just don't understand the theory behind "I want my 10/22 to *look* like a rifle that's readily available on the market for about as much as the 10/22 plus the stock costs". If you want your 10/22 to look like a 249, go for it. But when you're working on $400 deep into an M1 lookalike, why not just buy an M1?

Probably gonna get called a heretic for this, but I haven't really though about all that. I just know Enfields are good guns, and there's a large show next weekend that I was going to browse at.

I suppose WW2, since I imagine WW1s are more expensive/harder to find.

No idea what any of that is.

Probably true blue British, but an Aussie rifle would be neat.
>>
>>34103188

>Probably gonna get called a heretic for this

we all start somewhere senpai. I'd recommend looking at some youtube videos of people shooting mk3 and mk4 enfields.

>I suppose WW2, since I imagine WW1s are more expensive/harder to find.

they both are within the 300-500 dollar price range generally speaking.

the mk 3 is ww1 and the mk 4 is ww2. both are excellent rifles.

also for aussie enfields look for Lithglow on the barrel band near the bolt handle

I paid $375 for my Aussie locally. Realistically you may only have 1 option at the show if you're looking for an Enfield.

Something to note that I ran into. I AM NOT 100% SURE THAT I AM RIGHT, but my research indicates that Aussies put a band of paint around the barrel, green meant the rifle was good, yellow (like my rifle) indicated it was serviceable, but second grade (My bore is frosted but the rifling is good) and red meant the gun was for drill only.

The BRITS on the other hand put green on good rifles, yellow on rifles intended for drill and red on rifles that were for handling practice only.

Again, I'm not positive that I'm right on that, but something to think about when you look at the guns. There's a good chance that the paint will have been sanded off if the rifles were painted as well.

This and fuddlore. The Carcano has what's called progressive rifling, meaning the twist rate is very low near the chamber and gets progressively tighter toward the muzzle. Fudds used to buy these rifles cheap and cut them down, not knowing about the weird rifling, and they wouldn't hit anything for shit.

Also there may be some stigma on them what with Lee Harvey Oswald having used one to shoot Kennedy.

So I recently got a M24/47, and it literally has zero matching parts. Oddly enough everything seems to be brand new (bore is even mirror bright). However, every single part has a slash through the serial numbers. My friend said this is because the M24/47's underwent a repair program where Zastava (or whoever else) just built rifles out of random parts and adjusted them as necessary to make them work.

Is this anything to be worried about? So far the rifle shot great at the range, giving me a consistent ~2-3 inch group at 100 yards.

Nothing to be worried about. Typical of combloc countries, and specifically Russia after WWII to just electropencil out serial numbers and force match parts.
